The effect of indirect vision skills on head and shoulder posture amongst Korean dental hygienists.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effects of indirect vision skills on head and shoulder posture in dental hygienists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included a total of 100 female clinical dental hygienists. It evaluated musculoskeletal symptoms of the neck, shoulders and back, head and shoulder posture (craniovertebral angle [CVA] and sagittal shoulder posture angle [SSPA]). Indirect vision skills were assessed using the O'Connor tweezer test under indirect vision with a mirror. To analyse factors associated with the CVA and SSPA, an independent t test, one-

The somatic component of schizophrenia: a dissociation of the goals of visual attention and bifoveal fixation?

The presence of disorders of eye movements is today regarded as 'the strongest candidate for a genetically transmitted biological trait marker of schizophrenic disorders' (1). The present study is based on the experience, rather than the behaviour, of one patient in a search for a method of objectifying his visual problems. This method was found to be a simple test, which demonstrates a disturbance of fixation: while one eye accommodated on the figure without vergence, the other, vergent, eye fused with the image of the related background. The disorder had been misdiagnosed as 'exophoria' in c

Binocular Vision Anomalies in Scotland at Age 3.5-5.5 Years: An Epidemiological Study.

PURPOSE: Scotland has comprehensive vision screening at age 3.5-5.5 years, with ~85% participation (40,000-50,000 episodes annually). Orthoptists deliver the screening, including presenting vision and tests for binocular vision anomalies (BVAnom). The aims were to investigate (1) changes in the prevalence of BVAnom, 2013-2022 and (2) whether less comprehensive screening of solely presenting vision would detect BVAnom. METHODS: Data from eight Scottish Health Boards were available for 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. Binocular vision tests included cover test, ocular m

Visual snow syndrome as a neuropsychiatric network disorder: clinical features, mechanisms, and therapeutic perspectives.

Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) is a neurological condition characterized by the persistent perception of dynamic, flickering, dot-like visual disturbances across the entire visual field, resembling television static. Increasing evidence indicates that VSS is frequently accompanied by a broad spectrum of psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, depression, depersonalization, fatigue, and sleep disturbances, all of which substantially impair quality of life. Although the pathogenesis of VSS remains incompletely understood, Current evidence increasingly suggests that VSS may represent a multisystem n

Testing stereopsis in the preschool child: is it clinically useful?

The evaluation of stereoacuity should provide an unambiguous assessment of binocular function in infants and young children. Unfortunately, clinical measures of stereopsis in these young patients often result in stereotheresholds poorer than the criteria suggested to differentiate normal from anomalous binocular vision. Thus, two experiments were conducted to determine whether the large stereothresholds frequently demonstrated on tests designed for young children are diagnostic of normal binocular function in preschool children. The first experiment investigated the salience of the monocular c

Vision Therapy: A Primer and Caution for Pediatricians.

Vision therapy, also known as behavioral therapy, is theorized by its practitioners to treat a variety of visual disorders, including learning disability in children. However, the utility of vision therapy to treat various learning disabilities is challenged by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and the American Association of Certified Orthoptists. The purpose of this review is to (1) provide an overview of vision therapy, (2) evaluate the evidence for vision therapy, and (3) give practical re

Advancing Insights into Pediatric Macular Diseases: A Comprehensive Review.

Pediatric macular disorders are a diverse group of inherited retinal diseases characterized by central vision loss due to dysfunction and degeneration of the macula, the region of the retina responsible for high-acuity vision. Common disorders in this category include Stargardt disease, Best vitelliform macular dystrophy, and X-linked retinoschisis. These conditions often manifest during childhood or adolescence, with symptoms such as progressive central vision loss, photophobia, and difficulty with fine visual tasks. Underlying mechanisms involve genetic mutations that disrupt photoreceptor a

Visual Snow: Updates on Pathology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Until the last 5 years, there was very little in the literature about the phenomenon now known as visual snow syndrome. This review will examine the current thinking on the pathology of visual snow and how that thinking has evolved. RECENT FINDINGS: While migraine is a common comorbidity to visual snow syndrome, evidence points to these conditions being distinct clinical entities, with some overlapping pathophysiological processes. There is increasing structural and functional evidence that visual snow syndrome is due to a widespread cortical dysfunction. Cortical hyperexci

Co-infectious Uveitis With Syphilis and Lyme Disease: A Case Report.

Uveitis is the inflammation of the uveal tract (i.e., iris, ciliary body, and choroid). Uveitis is categorized into the following three types based on the anatomical location of inflammation: anterior, intermediate, and posterior uveitis. Severe cases may lead to panuveitis, where all three layers may become inflamed potentially resulting in permanent vision loss. Uveitis can arise from different underlying disorders, including infectious causes or autoimmune disorders. Syphilis and Lyme disease are uncommon causes of uveitis. Eye involvement can occur at any stage in Lyme disease, characteriz

Screening tools for the identification of dementia for adults with age-related acquired hearing or vision impairment: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive screening tests frequently rely on items being correctly heard or seen. We aimed to identify, describe, and evaluate the adaptation, validity, and availability of cognitive screening and assessment tools for dementia which have been developed or adapted for adults with acquired hearing and/or vision impairment. METHOD: Electronic databases were searched using subject terms "hearing disorders" OR "vision disorders" AND "cognitive assessment," supplemented by exploring reference lists of included papers and via consultation with health professionals to identify additional

Prevalence of vision and ocular disease conditions in a clinical pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to fill a significant void in the ophthalmic literature by performing a large scale, comprehensive, prospective study of the prevalence of vision disorders and ocular pathology in a clinical pediatric population using well-defined diagnostic criteria. METHODS: A prospective study was performed on 2,023 consecutive patients between the ages of 6 months and 18 years presenting for an initial comprehensive examination at the Eye Institute of The Pennsylvania College of Optometry. There were 373 subjects between 6 months and 5 years, 11 months of age, and

The striate cortex and hemianopia.

We begin with the functions of the striate cortex (area V1 of the visual cortex) and end with a review of the effects of damage to striate cortex or its inputs; namely, homonymous hemifield defects. Clinical and anatomical studies accrued over the past 25 years have modified our understanding of the role of V1 in vision. We discuss the evidence that V1 is not the sole recipient of visual signals; is not the earliest recipient of visual signals; and is not essential for conscious vision. In the second section, we give a brief history of how the visual field was found to be represented in striat
