Gaze stabilization and dynamic visual acuity across human locomotion speeds.

Gaze stabilization during human locomotion requires precise coordination between eye and head movements to maintain visual acuity. Yet how the resultant eye-head coordination patterns relate to visual performance remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigated how locomotion-dependent changes in head-eye coordination relate to dynamic visual acuity (DVA) across walking and running speeds (0.4-2.4 m/s). Twenty-eight healthy participants walked or ran on a treadmill while fixating a visual target, with simultaneous recordings of eye movements (video-oculography), head kinematics (motion c

Underwater visual single target acuity in harbor seals (Phoca vitulina).

Single target acuity (STA) is a key measure for understanding visual object perception in harbor seals. While STA was already determined with stationary and moving compact single targets of different contrasts in air, we herein assessed underwater STA with the same stimuli as used for aerial testing for comparison. A two-alternative-forced-choice task was conducted with two trained harbor seals under controlled light and turbidity conditions. Underwater STA was determined as 0.30 deg for stationary and 0.27 deg for moving single targets, and thus matched the previously documented aerial STA fo

Effect of nystagmus on VEP-based objective visual acuity estimates.

In order to determine the effect of nystagmus on objective visual acuity (VA) estimates, we compared subjective (VApsych) and objective (VEP, VAVEP) VA estimates in participants with nystagmus. For this purpose, 20 participants with nystagmus (NY) caused by idiopathic infantile nystagmus, albinism, achiasma or acquired nystagmus were recruited in this study. Estimates of BCVA (best corrected visual acuity) were determined psychophysically (VApsych; FrACT, Freiburg visual acuity test) and electrophysiologically (VAVEP; EP2000) according to ISCEV (International Society of Clinical Electrophysiol

Visual acuity and its postoperative outcome after transsphenoidal adenoma resection.

Transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) represents the gold standard of pituitary adenoma resection, providing a safe and minimal invasive treatment for patients suffering from symptoms of mass effect. The aim of this study is to analyze the postoperative improvement of visual function after adenoma resection and to identify prognostic factors for the postoperative clinical recovery. We performed a retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients treated via a transsphenoidal approach for pituitary adenomas from April 2006 to December 2019 in a high-volume neurosurgical department. Our primary outcome

Mexican Hat Modulation of Visual Acuity Following an Exogenous Cue.

Classical models of exogenous attention suggest that attentional enhancement at the focus of attention degrades gradually with distance from the attended location. On the other hand, the Attentional Attraction Field (AAF) model (Baruch and Yeshurun, 2014) suggests that the shift of receptive fields toward the attended location, reported by several physiological studies, leads to a decreased density of RFs at the attentional surrounds and hence the model predicts that the modulation of performance by spatial attention may have the shape of a Mexican Hat. Motivated by these theories, this study

Macular Thickness and Mesopic Visual Acuity in Healthy Older Subjects.

UNLABELLED: Purpose/Aim: Impaired mesopic visual acuity (VA) is a risk factor for incident early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) This study examines relationships between macular thickness measurements and photopic or mesopic VA in healthy eyes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 38 young and 39 older healthy individuals, total, inner, and outer retinal layer (IRL and ORL) thicknesses were measured in the macula region through spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Measurements were made across three subfields centered at the fovea: central foveal, pericentral, and peripheral. B

Training on spatiotemporal masking improves crowded and uncrowded visual acuity.

Spatial crowding impairs conscious visual perception and object recognition in clutter.Short presentation times produce crowding in the normal fovea, in young participants and in uncorrected presbyopes ("aging eye"), measured as reduced visual acuity (VA). On the other hand, perceptual learning improves near VA in healthy young adults, in presbyopia, and in amblyopia. Here we aimed at exploring the effects of perceptual training on crowded VA in uncorrected presbyopes with naturally decreased VA, with two specific objectives: (a) to objectively measure crowded VA, taking advantage of the natur

Changes in brain morphology in albinism reflect reduced visual acuity.

Albinism, in humans and many animal species, has a major impact on the visual system, leading to reduced acuity, lack of binocular function and nystagmus. In addition to the lack of a foveal pit, there is a disruption to the routing of the nerve fibers crossing at the optic chiasm, resulting in excessive crossing of fibers to the contralateral hemisphere. However, very little is known about the effect of this misrouting on the structure of the post-chiasmatic visual pathway, and the occipital lobes in particular. Whole-brain analyses of cortical thickness in a large cohort of subjects with alb

Improving documentation of visual acuity in patients suffering facial fractures.

Failure to identify eye injuries associated with facial fractures can lead to life-altering morbidity. Oral and maxillofacial surgery teams receiving referrals of patients with these injuries have a vital role in ensuring that visual acuity (VA) is recorded at the time of presentation. We present a clinical audit of documentation of VA in 126 patients who sustained orbital floor and zygoma fractures. Our intervention involved a focussed teaching session for trainees responsible for taking such referrals. VA was appropriately documented in 16.5% before the session and 57.1% afterwards. This stu

Functional visual acuity measurement in cataract and intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recently, functional visual acuity (FVA) measurement has been reported to be an important method of determining 'masked impairment of visual function' and assessing visual acuity in detail. This review discusses a new continuous FVA measurement system for the assessment of visual performance and introduces the application of FVA measurement in cataract and intraocular lens implantation. RECENT FINDINGS: The FVA was first developed to detect impaired visual function for daily activities in dry eye syndrome. The usefulness of this new methodology has been described in patient

Optic disc abnormalities - diagnosis, evolution and influence on visual acuity.

Congenital abnormalities of the optic disc are not so rare. The etiology for the most of them is unknown. Visual acuity of affected eye may be minimally or severely affected, depending on the extent of lesion. All of these conditions can be unilateral or bilateral. Children who have unilateral optic disc abnormalities generally present during the preschool years with sensory esotropia. Visual acuity may be unaffected like in optic disc pit, optic disc drusen, fibre medullares, ect. However, during the evolution they may cause a decrease in visual acuity like serous retinal detachment in optic

A clinical index for predicting visual acuity after cataract surgery.

We developed a clinical index for predicting postoperative visual acuity of cataract patients and cross-validated it using data from 182 patients aged 70 years and older. The index consisted of four statistically combined indicators: age, preoperative visual acuity, frequency of reading, and comorbidity. Validation of the index included comparisons to two standard technical instruments for measurement of retinal visual acuity. For the clinical index, 72% of predictions were accurate within one Snellen line of postoperative visual acuity compared to 37% using a laser interferometer and 33% usin

Visual acuity development in normal and abnormal preterm human infants.

The grating acuity of preterm infants was determined by measurements of the visual evoked potential (VEP) produced by phase alternation of sinusoidal luminance gratings. The development of visual acuity in healthy preterm infants appears to be accelerated when compared with full term infants of the same post-conceptual age. Cortical insults and the more advanced stages of retinopathy of prematurity may adversely affect acuity development as indexed by the VEP. Preterm twins also appear to have lower acuity than preterm monoparous infants.

[Age dependence of visual acuity after incomplicated cataractoperation (author's transl)].

The results of visual acuity in 1523 cataract-extractions were evaluated; comparing the visual acuity of the 7th to the 9th postoperative days, when the patients left the hospital. 73,1% of the patients had a supplemental disease of the eye or another general disease. 76,6% of the patients had a postoperative visual acuity between 5/4 and 5/15, clearly depending on the age of the patients. General diseases influence scarcely surgery, but the older the patients the more we find a reduced visual acuity that is reduced by generative senile macula disease.
