Is vision continuous with cognition? The case for cognitive impenetrability of visual perception.

Although the study of visual perception has made more progress in the past 40 years than any other area of cognitive science, there remain major disagreements as to how closely vision is tied to cognition. This target article sets out some of the arguments for both sides (arguments from computer vision, neuroscience, psychophysics, perceptual learning, and other areas of vision science) and defends the position that an important part of visual perception, corresponding to what some people have called early vision, is prohibited from accessing relevant expectations, knowledge, and utilities in

The cerebral activity related to the visual perception of forward motion in depth.

We have used the technique of PET to chart the areas of human cerebral cortex specifically responsive to an optical flow stimulus simulating forward motion in depth over a flat horizontal surface. The optical flow display contained about 2000 dots accelerating in radial directions away from the focus of expansion, which subjects fixated at the centre of the display monitor. Dots remained of constant size, but their density decreased from the horizon, lying across the middle of the screen, to the foreground at the lower screen margin; the top half of the display was void. For the control stimul

[Evaluation of time parameters of visual perception in the diagnosis of retrobulbar neuritis].

The suggested complex of the perimetric and electrophysiologic methods for the assessment of the function of the visual analyzer has helped detect diffuse involvement of the ocular system in clinically unilateral retrobulbar neuritis and define the incidence rate of involvement of the contralateral normal optic nerve. Prolongation of the latency of visual perception appears to be characteristic of retrobulbar neuritis and indicates the demyelinization of the nerve visual fibers.

[Asymmetry of visual perceptive activity of faces and emotional facial expressions].

Eye movements were studied in 40 right-handed subjects during perception of symmetrical chimerical faces. These movements were recorded using an original system based on a differential optical method for the detection of corneal reflection and of the pupil made shiny. Under basal conditions, the first fixation was usually located in the left visual hemifield. The subjects spent more time gazing at the right hemiface (P less than 0.04). This visuo-spatial asymmetry in favour of the left hemispace was increased when the subject was requested to determine the emotional expressions of a new series

The role of the right hemisphere in form perception and visual gnosis organization.

Peculiarities of series of picture interpretations and Rorschach test results in patients with unilateral benign hemispheric tumours are discussed. It is concluded that visual perception in the right hemisphere has hierarchic structure, i.e., each successive area from the occipital lobe towards the frontal having a more complicated function. Visual engrams are distributed over the right hemisphere in a manner similar to the way the visual information is recorded in holographic systems. In any impairment of the right hemisphere a tendency towards whole but unclear vision arises. The preservatio

Correlations between developmental test of visual perception-adolescent and adult and visual evoked potential in people with multiple sclerosis.

Background: Optic neuritis (ON) is a common visual sign in multiple sclerosis (MS). Although ON is recovered in most cases, other visual functions such as visual perception are affected and are not fully recovered. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between visual evoked potential (VEP) P100 and N70 latencies and visual perception using the Developmental Test of Visual Perception-Adolescent and Adult (DTVP-A) in people with MS. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 24 people with ON due to MS, aged 18-50 years old took part. In order to assess the visual perception and

Ignition's glow: Ultra-fast spread of global cortical activity accompanying local "ignitions" in visual cortex during conscious visual perception.

Despite extensive research, the spatiotemporal span of neuronal activations associated with the emergence of a conscious percept is still debated. The debate can be formulated in the context of local vs. global models, emphasizing local activity in visual cortex vs. a global fronto-parietal "workspace" as the key mechanisms of conscious visual perception. These alternative models lead to differential predictions with regard to the precise magnitude, timing and anatomical spread of neuronal activity during conscious perception. Here we aimed to test a specific aspect of these predictions in whi

Overlapping activity periods in early visual cortex and posterior intraparietal area in conscious visual shape perception: a TMS study.

Parietal cortex is often activated in brain imaging studies on conscious visual processing, but its causal role and timing in conscious and nonconscious perception are poorly understood. We studied the role of posterior intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and early visual areas (V1/V2) in conscious and nonconscious vision by interfering with their functioning with MRI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The observers made binary forced-choice decisions concerning the shape or color of the metacontrast masked targets and rated the quality of their conscious perception. TMS was applied 30, 60

The effect of syntactic and semantic information on word grounding through visual perception.

INTRODUCTION: Word grounding refers to the ability of agents to associate linguistic terms with the perceptual concepts they represent, such as color, shape, and spatial features. This study quantitatively evaluates how syntactic and semantic information affects word-grounding performance. METHODS: We evaluated five configurations within a generative multimodal Bayesian framework. The baseline grounds words using perceptual cues, while the additional configurations independently incorporate word-position indices, part-of-speech tags, FastText embeddings, and transformer-based contextual embed

Ultrafast visual perception beyond human capabilities enabled by motion analysis using synaptic transistors.

Optical flow, inspired by biological visual systems, calculates spatial motion vectors aiming to enable robotics to excel in dynamic environments. However, current algorithms, despite human-competitive task performance on benchmark datasets, suffer from significant time delays, limiting practical deployment. Here, we introduce a neuromorphic temporal-attention hardware that emulates the interaction between the retina and the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) to extract temporal motion cues directly in hardware. Using a two-dimensional synaptic transistor array, the system encodes brightness cha

Different modality-specific mechanisms mediate serial dependence effects in visual and auditory perception.

BACKGROUND: Perceptual history plays an important role in sensory processing and decision making, shaping how we perceive and judge external objects and events. Indeed, past stimuli can bias what we are currently seeing in an attractive fashion, making a current stimulus appear more similar to a preceding one than it actually is. Such attractive "serial dependence" effects concern virtually every aspect of perception, suggesting that they may reflect a fundamental principle of brain processing. However, it is unclear whether the ubiquitous nature of serial dependence is due to an underlying ce

Audiovisual integration in phonetic perception without visual awareness and its age-related decline.

Speech is essential for everyday communication during the entire lifespan of an individual. Visual lip movement can support auditory speech perception, particularly in noisy environments and among older adults with hearing impairments. This study investigated whether visual information is integrated with auditory phonetic information without visual awareness and how this process changes with age. Participants heard low signal-to-noise monosyllables (/ba/, /da/, or /ga/) accompanied by visual lip movements under either visible or invisible conditions, the latter being achieved using continuous

Dissonance Between Law Courts and the Science of Visual Perception in Medical Imaging.

Lawsuits for spending too little time interpreting each radiological image are a vexatious charge to level against a radiologist in medical malpractice court. In this article, we recount two medicolegal cases where the defendant radiologists were accused of missing a life-threatening diagnosis due to not spending enough time reviewing each image. We consider the literature in vision sciences, visual perception in radiology and interpretive biases to demonstrate that using reading speed as evidence of negligence in a malpractice court represents in incorrect understanding of how radiologists pe

Evidence for strictly monocular processing in visual motion opponency and Glass pattern perception.

When presented with locally paired dots moving in opposite directions, motion selective neurons in the middle temporal cortex (MT) reduce firing while neurons in V1 are unaffected. This physiological effect is known as motion opponency. The current study used psychophysics to investigate the neural circuit underlying motion opponency. We asked whether opposing motion signals could arrive from different eyes into the receptive field of a binocular neuron while still maintaining motion opponency. We took advantage of prior findings that orientation discrimination of the motion axis (along which

Neural correlates associated with impaired global motion perception in cerebral visual impairment (CVI).

Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is associated with a wide range of visual perceptual deficits including global motion processing. However, the underlying neurophysiological basis for these impairments remain poorly understood. We investigated global motion processing abilities in individuals with CVI compared to neurotypical controls using a combined behavioral and multi-modal neuroimaging approach. We found that CVI participants had a significantly higher mean motion coherence threshold (determined using a random dot kinematogram pattern simulating optic flow motion) compared to controls. Us

Late disruption of central visual field disrupts peripheral perception of form and color.

Evidence from neuroimaging and brain stimulation studies suggest that visual information about objects in the periphery is fed back to foveal retinotopic cortex in a separate representation that is essential for peripheral perception. The characteristics of this phenomenon have important theoretical implications for the role fovea-specific feedback might play in perception. In this work, we employed a recently developed behavioral paradigm to explore whether late disruption to central visual space impaired perception of color. In the first experiment, participants performed a shape discriminat

tDCS recovers depth perception in adult amblyopic rats and reorganizes visual cortex activity.

Amblyopia or lazy eye is a neurodevelopmental disorder that arises during the infancy and is caused by the interruption of binocular sensory activity before maturation of the nervous system. This impairment causes long-term deterioration of visual skills, particularly visual acuity and depth perception. Although visual function recovery has been supposed to be decreased with age as consequence of reduced neuronal plasticity, recent studies have shown that it is possible to promote plasticity and neurorestoration in the adult brain. Thus, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been

Contributions of local speech encoding and functional connectivity to audio-visual speech perception.

Seeing a speaker's face enhances speech intelligibility in adverse environments. We investigated the underlying network mechanisms by quantifying local speech representations and directed connectivity in MEG data obtained while human participants listened to speech of varying acoustic SNR and visual context. During high acoustic SNR speech encoding by temporally entrained brain activity was strong in temporal and inferior frontal cortex, while during low SNR strong entrainment emerged in premotor and superior frontal cortex. These changes in local encoding were accompanied by changes in direct

Human Occipital and Parietal GABA Selectively Influence Visual Perception of Orientation and Size.

GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in human brain. The level of GABA varies substantially across individuals, and this variability is associated with interindividual differences in visual perception. However, it remains unclear whether the association between GABA level and visual perception reflects a general influence of visual inhibition or whether the GABA levels of different cortical regions selectively influence perception of different visual features. To address this, we studied how the GABA levels of parietal and occipital cortices related to interindividual differences in
