Monozoic tapeworms (Caryophyllidea) are dominant components of parasite communities of suckers (Catostomidae) in North America, with Biacetabulum Hunter, 1927 representing one of the more species-rich genera. Molecular (28S rDNA) and morphological (including scanning electron microscopy and histology) evaluation of newly collected tapeworms from different fish hosts revealed the existence of four similar (and three closely related) species of Biacetabulum. These four species differ from their congeners by having a long body (up to 48 mm long) with a very long, slender neck (its length represen

Specimens representing two new species of Guidus Ivanov, 2006 were collected from the Magellan skate (Bathyraja magellanica [Philippi]) in the Patagonian Continental Shelf of Argentina, Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Guidus francoi sp. n. and Guidus magellanicus sp. n. differ from their congeners by a particular combination of features, including type of bothridia, worm length, number of testes, and distribution of vitelline follicles. Guidus francoi sp. n. is distinguished from G. magellanicus sp. n. by having fewer proglottids, fewer testes and a higher ratio between the cirrus sac length and

In 2018 and 2019, salmonid fishes, Salmo trutta L. and Salvelinus alpinus (L.) from lakes in Iceland were assessed for trematodes during a parasitological examination. Combined morphological and molecular analyses revealed the presence of four trematode species, two of which were previously known to parasitise salmonids in Iceland, Crepidostomum farionis (Müller, 1780) and Phyllodistomum umblae (Fabricius, 1780), and the two remaining species were recognised as new to science. Morphologically and genetically, Crepidostomum brinkmanni n. sp. and C. pseudofarionis n. sp. are closely related to t

Echinostoma paraensei (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) lives in the duodenum and bile duct of rodents and is reported as a useful model for studies on the biology of flatworms. Here, we compared the growth and development of pre and post ovigerous worms collected 3, 7, 14 and 21 days post infection from experimentally infected hamster (permissive host) and Wistar rat (less permissive hosts). Linear measurements and ratios were examined by light (morphology and morphometry) and confocal laser scanning microscopy. At day 3, either worm from hamsters or rats were small with poorly developed gonads. At

The examination of eight spotted skates, Raja straeleni Poll, resulted in the discovery of four new species of Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1849, namely A. microhabentes sp. n., A. microtenuis sp. n., A. crassus sp. n., and A. dolichocollum sp. n., located off the Western Cape of South Africa. With a total of over 200 valid species of Acanthobothrium recognised worldwide, the use of an integrative approach becomes imperative in the interest of simplifying interspecific comparisons between congeners. In accordance with this, the four new species were incorporated into the category classificatio

The persistence of the embryonic vitelline duct can lead to omphalomesenteric duct anomalies. A wide variety of anomalies, depending on the remnant segment and its degree of involution, may occur as a result of the omphalomesenteric duct failing to obliterate completely. The most frequent omphalomesenteric duct anomaly is Meckel's diverticulum, which is present in approximately 2-3 % of the population. Despite the progress in medical imaging, conventional abdominal computed tomography and endoscopy have limitations for the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum. The laparoscopic exploratory remain

In sirenomelia the caudal tissues of the foetus fail to develop because of the "stealing" of blood by a vitelline vascular shunt from the distal aorta during embryogenesis interfering with foetal development. A 25 years old 2nd gravida delivered one full term premature grossly asphyxiated baby at BS Medical College on 24-10-1998. The examination of the dead foetus revealed no genitalia, no anal nor urethral opening and having a single lower limb with the single thigh and rudimentary leg. Skiagram of the foetus corroborated it to be a case of syrenomelia.

A 35-year-old housewife living in Seoul complained of a recurrent palpable abdominal mass. Excisional biopsy was done. The cystic mass showed an immature worm of Paragonimus sp. in the cyst cavity. It measured 7 x 4 mm and showed well-developed oral and ventral sucker, uterus, 5-branched ovary and intestine after acetocarmine staining. But the testes and vitelline duct were not developed fully and there was no egg in the uterus. The patient has eaten raw fish. The case of ectopic paragonimiasis in the abdominal subcutaneous tissue was presented.

We present the case of a term newborn with trisomy 21 who presented to the paediatric emergency department with periumbilical flare and green-brown discharge from a clamped umbilical cord, initially suspected to be omphalitis. However, it was noticed later, that when the infant strained or cried, a thick, bubbling and offensive green-brown discharge came out of the clamped umbilical cord with umbilical flatus. An ultrasound abdomen and umbilical cord confirmed the presence of a persistent omphalomesenteric duct (POMD). He was then transferred to the paediatric surgical unit. There, he underwen

The omphalomesenteric duct is an embryologic structure that connects the yolk sac with the primitive midgut of the developing fetus. Omphalomesenteric duct anomalies include a group of entities that result from failed resorption of the omphalomesenteric duct. These anomalies include Meckel diverticulum, omphalomesenteric fistula, fibrous bands, cysts, and umbilical polyps. Meckel diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and is usually asymptomatic. Symptoms develop when Meckel diverticulum involves complications such as hemorrhage, inflammation, and perf

Intussusception is one of the common causes of acute abdomen in early childhood, particularly in children younger than two years of age. The majority of cases in children are idiopathic. Pathologic lead points can be identified in only 25 percent of cases. Here. we present a case of 15 months female child with Ileoileal postoperative intussusception with an anastomotic margin as a lead point, following resection anastomosis done for patent vitello intestinal duct. Role of high clinical suspicion, investigations and judgement are highlighted in managing the case. Keywords: Anastomosis; ileoilea

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of accidental decapitation of a persistent omphaloenteric duct (POD) in congenital hernia of the umbilical cord in a newborn male.
CASE PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: The newborn was transferred to an intensive care unit, where under closer inspection the diagnosis of an omphalocele was presumed. Surgical exploration at our Pediatric Surgical University Clinic revealed a clamped and decapitated POD in the umbilical cord. The decapitation had gone unnoticed due to severe asphyxia resulting from meconium aspiration encountered at the time of delivery. Using general a

We report the case of a newborn, who developed intestinal obstruction soon after birth. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a congenital vascular band anomaly extending from the antimesenteric border of the terminal ileum to the gallbladder in association with ileal atresia. Surgical intervention was performed for correction of the disorder. A review of the embryology and congenital vascular bands is presented together with discussion as to possible etiopathogenesis leading to small bowel atresia.

Embryonic vestiges of the umbilical cord are classic findings in routine morphologic examination of the placenta. In order to evaluate their clinicopathologic significance, we examined samples from the fetal and placental ends of 1,000 umbilical cords and collected the principal clinical findings of the corresponding newborns. Microscopic evidence of embryonic remnants were found in 231 cases (23.1%) divided into remnants of the allantoic duct (63%), the omphalomesenteric duct (6.6%), and the embryonic vessels (30.4%), including one case of hemangioma and an accessory small artery. There were

Three cases of omphalomesenteric band obstruction in early infancy with various radiographic presentations, including intermittent obstruction in one, are reported. Small-bowel volvulus was found in all three patients at surgery. One case progressed to bowel necrosis with portal venous gas. A survey of the mode of presentation, surgical findings, and pathology of 135 published cases of intestinal obstruction in children demonstrates that a closed loop, with or without volvulus, is the most common complication of remnant bands.

The genus Desmogonius (Digenea: Pronocephalidae) is known only from sea turtles and currently contains two species: D. desmogonius Stephens, 1911 and D. loossi Chattopadhyaya, 1972. The present study describes a third species, Desmogonius baldassinae n. sp. found in a juvenile green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) from Brazil. The new species is larger than its congeners in all dimensions, with vitellinic fields ending posterior to the ovary. In addition, we present a key for species identification and an emended diagnosis of the genus Desmogonius.

Mermaid syndrome or Sirenomelia is a rare congenital deformity in which the legs are fused and bears resemblance to mermaid's tail. It carries a poor prognosis, due to associated urogenital and gastrointestinal abnormalities. An early antenatal diagnosis using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can help in termination of pregnancy. Embryologically, it is considered as the extreme form of caudal regression syndrome due to the persistence of vitelline artery. Here, we report a case of Sirenomelia associated with bilateral renal agenesis along with the rare findings of discoid adrenal, lumbar menin

Meckel's diverticulum is a true diverticulum from remnant of vitelline duct. It is most common congenital anomaly of intestine. It is associated with intestinal atresia and anorectal anomalies. It contains heterotrophic epithelium. Most common heterotrophic mucosa is gastric followed by pancreatic tissue. Adenocarcinoma arising from Meckel's diverticulum is very rare. Spontaneous perforation of adenocarcinoma rarely reported. Most of perforation reported in Meckel's diverticulum diagnosed during intraoperative period. This is a case report of spontaneous rupture of adenocarcinoma of Meckel's d
