The development of a core key word signing vocabulary (Lámh) to facilitate communication with children with down syndrome in the first year of mainstream primary school in Ireland.

Key word signing, an unaided augmentative, and alternative communication (AAC) system is commonly used by children with Down syndrome who attend mainstream primary schools. To ensure the successful use of key word signing within a mainstream environment, a meaningful, contextually appropriate sign vocabulary must be available to all communication partners. The aim of this study was to develop a core school-based key word signing vocabulary to facilitate effective communication between children with Down syndrome and their communication partners in the first year of mainstream primary school. Language- and Activity-Specific Associations Between English and Chinese Home Literacy Activities and Receptive Vocabulary Among Chinese-Canadian Children: A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study.

This repeated cross-sectional study examined how English and Chinese home literacy activities were associated with receptive vocabulary among Chinese-English bilingual children in British Columbia, Canada. The study included 123 children in Grade 1 and 126 children in Grade 2. Children's English and Chinese receptive vocabulary was assessed using standardized vocabulary measures, and parents reported the frequency of five home literacy activities in each language: book or magazine reading, computer or laptop use, television or movie watching, storytelling, and singing songs. Descriptive analys

Hemodynamic Responses to Word Forms in Japanese Infant-Directed Vocabulary in 5- and 9-Month-Old Infants: Early Sensitivity to Prosodic Structure and Emergence of Prosodic Representations.

The prosodic characteristics of a native language greatly influence early language acquisition. Yet, Japanese mothers are known to use a specific prosodic structure in infant-directed vocabulary (IDV)-specifically, three-mora, two-syllable words with a heavy-light pattern-which, crucially, differs from the standard prosodic rhythm of adult vocabulary. This study used near-infrared spectroscopy to examine hemodynamic responses to the Japanese IDV form in 5-month-old (n = 31) and 9-month-old (n = 34) Japanese infants, targeting the period before and during the emergence of this preference. Real-World Use of Controlled Terminologies, Ontologies, and Vocabularies for Evidence Generation Across a Large International Observational Network: Challenges and Lessons Learned From a Mixed Method Study.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale international real-world evidence generation benefits from terminology harmonization. Despite widespread adoption of standardized vocabularies, their effective use and long-term sustainability at scale remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine real-world terminology and code use in data across a federated network of observational data sources. METHODS: We conducted a 2-part survey of researchers and data owners within the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics community on their terminology use, challenges, and needs, accompanied by

Learning science concepts alongside language goals: A telehealth replication of a randomised controlled trial examining whether children with developmental language disorder can learn vocabulary or grammar in combination with curricular science content.

PURPOSE: We asked whether children with developmental language disorder can learn vocabulary or grammar targets and curricular content simultaneously. We replicated prior work integrating two language interventions into a first-grade science curriculum and extended it by testing delivery via teletherapy. METHOD: A parallel arm randomised controlled trial was conducted using telehealth approaches. Children aged 4-7years with developmental language disorder were randomly assigned to one of three arms, science-only (n = 13), science plus grammar (n = 11), and science plus vocabulary (n = 10), wi

Shared characteristics of intervention techniques for oral vocabulary and speech comprehensibility in preschool children with co-occurring features of developmental language disorder and a phonological speech sound disorder: protocol for a systematic review with narrative synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that over one-third of young children with developmental language disorder (DLD) or speech sound disorder (SSD) have co-occurring features of both. A co-occurring DLD and SSD profile is associated with negative long-term outcomes relating to communication, literacy and emotional well-being. However, the best treatment approach for young children with this profile is not understood. The aim of the proposed review is to identify intervention techniques for both DLD and SSD, along with their shared characteristics. The findings will then be analysed in the context

A Multi-Theoretical and Multi-Method Family Study Approach to Preschool Inhibitory Control: Links to Working Memory, Receptive Vocabulary, Behavioral Maladjustment, and Parent Mental Health in the Context of Temperament and Executive Functioning Perspectives.

Inhibitory control (IC) is defined as the executive functioning (EF) and self-regulatory temperamental inhibition of impulsive or pre-potent behavior and has been consistently linked to multiple forms of childhood cognitive and socio-emotional maladjustment including academic and learning challenges, externalizing behaviors, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, the results of relevant investigations are somewhat dependent on the method of IC assessment and the theoretical approach of the researcher. The two primary theoretical perspectives on IC are the temperament and the EF

Lexical Trajectories in Toddlers from Low-Income Bilingual Immigrant and Monolingual Families in Italy.

In the extant literature on the development of the SES-related vocabulary gap, effects of low-income status and immigrant background often overlap. This study compared vocabulary trajectories in Italian (societal language) with normative data and investigated environmental factors related to vocabulary development in 83 toddlers (49% girls) from equivalent lowincome monolingual (28) and bilingual immigrant (55) families, from 18 to 36 months. Childcare teachers assessed vocabulary every 6 months using the Italian MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory (CDI). Parents reported infor

Associations between early motor milestones and speech-language abilities in 4 to 6-year-old children with DLD.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects speech and language abilities. However, studies have shown that this disorder is widely connected to other aspects of development. We conducted an observational study on the relationship between early motor milestones and speech-language development in 4 to 6-year-old children with DLD. We studied 30 children diagnosed with DLD and 30 typically developed children. To assess early motor milestones, parents provided written responses regarding their children's age at which they reached crawling and walking milest

A View of the Lexical-Grammatical Link in Young Latinos With Specific Language Impairment Using Language-Specific and Conceptual Measures.

Purpose This study investigated the nature of the association of lexical-grammatical abilities within and across languages in Latino dual language learners (DLLs) with specific language impairment (SLI) using language-specific and bilingual measures. Method Seventy-four Spanish/English-speaking preschoolers with SLI from preschools serving low-income households participated in the study. Participants had stronger skills in Spanish (first language [L1]) and were in the initial stages of learning English (second language [L2]). The children's lexical, semantic, and grammar abilities were assesse

Synthetic phonics and decodable instructional reading texts: How far do these support poor readers?

This paper presents data from a quasi-experimental trial with paired randomisation that emerged during the development of a reading scheme for children in England. This trial was conducted with a group of 12 children, aged 5-6, and considered to be falling behind their peers in reading ability and a matched control group. There were two intervention conditions (A: using mixed teaching methods and a high percentage of non-phonically decodable vocabulary; P: using mixed teaching methods and low percentage of non-decodable vocabulary); allocation to these was randomised. Children were assessed at

Relating object memory to word learning: Data from a new test of toddlers' object recognition.

Learning names for concrete objects, which dominate early vocabularies, relies on visual processes such as object recognition and memory for previously named objects. We examined the relation between memory for pairs of familiar and novel objects and early vocabulary development. We tested 52 14- to 24-month-olds (26 girls) in a preferential-looking object recognition task. Analysis of data from 44 toddlers suggested memory performance was based on whether the stimuli were from categories known to children in this age range and a vocabulary percentile score based on age and gender, rather than

Relations Between Teacher Talk Characteristics and Child Language in Spoken-Language Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Classrooms.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine relations between teachers' conversational techniques and language gains made by their deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Specifically, we considered teachers' reformulations of child utterances, language elicitations, explicit vocabulary and syntax instruction, and wait time. METHOD: This was an observational, longitudinal study that examined the characteristics of teacher talk in 25 kindergarten through second-grade classrooms of 68 deaf and hard-of-hearing children who used spoken English. Standardized assessments provided measures of child voc

Mobile-assisted focus on forms in English for academic purposes instruction: Investigating the impacts on learning academic words.

Focus on forms (FonFs) is a pedagogical approach in Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA) that emphasizes students' conscious and direct attention to learning target language features in isolation and outside their meaningful context. FonFs has been employed extensively in foreign language vocabulary instruction, and earlier studies reported positive results for such interventions. The present study investigated mobile-assisted FonFs in the context of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to address the vocabulary learning needs of Iranian EFL students and examined developments in recept

Separability of Lexical and Morphological Knowledge: Evidence from Language Minority Children.

Lexical and morphological knowledge of school-aged children are correlated with each other, and are often difficult to distinguish. One reason for this might be that many tasks currently used to assess morphological knowledge require children to inflect or derive real words in the language, thus recruiting their vocabulary knowledge. The current study investigated the possible separability of lexical and morphological knowledge using two complementary approaches. First, we examined the correlations between vocabulary and four morphological tasks tapping different aspects of morphological proce

Predicting individual differences in reading comprehension: a twin study.

We examined the Simple View of reading from a behavioral genetic perspective. Two aspects of word decoding (phonological decoding and word recognition), two aspects of oral language skill (listening comprehension and vocabulary), and reading comprehension were assessed in a twin sample at age 9. Using latent factor models, we found that overlap among phonological decoding, word recognition, listening comprehension, vocabulary, and reading comprehension was primarily due to genetic influences. Shared environmental influences accounted for associations among word recognition, listening comprehen

Concurrent and longitudinal associations between the Home Literacy Environment and the language skills of children with Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Substantial research demonstrates a positive association between the Home Literacy Environment (HLE) and vocabulary growth in typically developing (TD) children (Lovčević, 2025). Though few studies have explored this in children with Down syndrome (DS), limited evidence suggests that an enriched HLE also promotes receptive vocabulary growth in this population (Dulin et al., 2023). However, the extent to which the HLE influences expressive vocabulary development within this population remains unclear (Dulin et al., 2023). RESEARCH QUESTIONS: (1) How do parent(s) of children with
