Anarchic hand with abnormal agency following right inferior parietal lobe damage: a case report.

Anarchic hand syndrome (AHS) is characterized by goal-directed movements performed without volitional control (agency). Different AHS subtypes have been identified; however, few studies have examined the posterior subtype. We report a case of AHS following right-hemisphere parietal damage, with left-sided somatosensory and proprioceptive impairment. Agency was examined for nonanarchic (volitional) movements performed using the anarchic hand. The patient experienced abnormal agency for movements whether motor intention and visual feedback were congruent or incongruent, but not when intention wa

[Voluntary activity of the neck muscles in patients with spastic torticollis].

The authors investigated the characteristics of motor disorders in patients with spastic torticollis. The study involved registration of volitional tensions of the neck muscles in isometric conditions, i.e., when the patient's head was rigidly fixed with regard to the body. Using a tensometric dynamometer the following three moments of force were measured: one responsible for bending the head forward or backward; the second, for bending the head to the right or left shoulder; and the third, for turning the head round the longitudinal axis. The electrical activity of the neck muscles was record

Extreme Sawtooth-Sign in Motor Neuron Disease (MND) suggests Laryngeal Resistance to Forced Expiratory Airflow.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of laryngeal dysfunction on airflow has not been well characterized in motor neuron disease (MND). This study aimed to detect and characterize extreme airflow oscillations informally observed during volitional cough and forced vital capacity (FVC) tasks in individuals with MND who demonstrated neurolaryngeal impairments including reduced speed and extent of vocal fold abduction compared to healthy controls during volitional cough expulsion. The extreme airflow oscillations in the MND group, when viewed as a flow-volume loop, appeared similar to the "sawtooth-sign." If the

Switch costs reveal vocal-specific executive demands during flexible action selection in crows.

Crows and other corvids exhibit remarkable cognitive flexibility, exercising volitional control that allows them to select, initiate and withhold actions based on deliberate decisions rather than reflex. Among these behaviours, vocalizations are especially demanding, yet crows perform them with exceptional precision, paralleling core building blocks of human speech. Despite this, the executive mechanisms supporting intentional vocal control, and how they differ from those governing other voluntary actions, remain largely unknown. We trained carrion crows to produce either vocalizations or peck

EEG Analysis During Active and Assisted Repetitive Movements: Evidence for Differences in Neural Engagement.

Two key ingredients of a successful neuro-rehabilitative intervention have been identified as intensive and repetitive training and subject's active participation, which can be coupled in an active robot-assisted training. To exploit these two elements, we recorded electroencephalography, electromyography and kinematics signals from nine healthy subjects performing a 2×2 factorial design protocol, with subject's volitional intention and robotic glove assistance as factors. We quantitatively evaluated primary sensorimotor, premotor and supplementary motor areas activation during movement execut

Effects of a metabotropic, mglu5, glutamate receptor antagonist on ethanol consumption by genetic drinking rats.

AIMS: To compare the effect of an antagonist of the mGlu5 glutamate receptor, 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)pyridine (MPEP) on a test for anxiety and on the volitional consumption of ethanol. METHODS: The test for anxiety was placement of a Sprague-Dawley rat for a 5 min observation period in an elevated plus-maze. Volitional consumption of ethanol in a two-choice paradigm was determined for male and female myers high ethanol-preferring rats after a 10-day 'step-up' test of 3-30% v/v ethanol vs water used to determine each rat's preferred concentration of ethanol. Each rat received a 4-day baseli

[Clinical picture of the late stages of sluggishly-progressing schizophrenia in advanced age].

Under examination there were 190 patients over 60 years of the age suffering from sluggishly progressing schizophrenia and observed at dispensaries for the long time. The course of the psychopathological disorders characteristic of that disease was followed in them for many decades. At the late age a tendency to a regression of most productive symptoms, a certain enlivening of the emotional-volitional sphere, and exaggeration of the signs of the personality structure deformity was revealed. Two types of the negative disorders are specified: one with prevalence of intellectual-volitional impair

Voluntary and involuntary motor behaviours in the varieties of religious experience.

Religion is a widespread feature of human life. Religions typically include both distinctive varieties of experience and also a set of foundational beliefs. An additional, but often overlooked, part of many religions is their expression through specific actions, which we here designate religious motor behaviours. Here we describe these religious motor behaviours and offer a taxonomy based on the conceptual schemes of movement neuroscience and neurology. Thus, religious rituals include both behaviours characterized by decreased motor output (e.g. ritualistic silence) and behaviours characterize

Statistical and artificial intelligence techniques to identify risk factors for suicide in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal Behaviors and Thoughts are a relevant public health issue that includes suicidal ideation, non-suicidal self-harm, attempted suicide, and failed suicides. Since there is a progression of suicidal behaviors, whereby suicide is more likely to be completed if there have already been previous behaviors or attempts to harm oneself, WHO has highlighted the need to detect early predictors of such suicidal behaviors, which can help identify individuals at risk, plan prevention strategies and implement specific therapeutic interventions, particularly in young people, thus reducing

Qualitative accounts of patients' determinants of vaginal dilator use after pelvic radiotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment with pelvic external beam radiotherapy with brachytherapy (EBRT/BT) for gynecological cancers may cause sexual dysfunction because of vaginal shortening and tightening. Regular vaginal dilator use is thought to reduce vaginal shortening and/or tightening, but compliance is poor. AIMS: This study identified determinants of patients' adherence with dilator use after EBRT/BT. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 women, aged 32-67 years, treated with EBRT/BT for gynecological cancers at two university medical centers in the past 36 months. Transcript

A Transdiagnostic Review of Negative Symptom Phenomenology and Etiology.

In the DSM5, negative symptoms are 1 of the 5 core dimensions of psychopathology evaluated for schizophrenia. However, negative symptoms are not pathognomonic-they are also part of the diagnostic criteria for other schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, disorders that sometimes have comorbid psychosis, diagnoses not in the schizophrenia-spectrum, and the general "nonclinical" population. Although etiological models of negative symptoms have been developed for chronic schizophrenia, there has been little attention given to whether these models have transdiagnostic applicability. In the current revie

Motor excitability during movement preparation in Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the occurrence of motor and vocal tics. TS has been linked to the impaired operation of cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuits that give rise to hyper-excitability of cortical motor areas, which may be exacerbated by dysfunctional intra-cortical inhibitory mechanisms. That said, many individuals gain control over their tics during adolescence and it has been suggested that this increased control arises as a result of the development of mechanisms that operate to suppress corticospinal excitability (CSE) ahead of vol

The use of dynamic electromyography to evaluate motor control in the hands of adults who have spasticity caused by brain injury.

A dynamic electromyographic analysis of grasp and release, performed on forty-eight upper extremities of forty-two adults who had had injury to the brain causing spasticity, showed volitional motor control of the finger flexors in 80 per cent and active extension of the fingers in 60 per cent. The flexor pollicis longus showed volitional control in 75 per cent of the hands and the extensor pollicis longus showed active control in 50 per cent. The extensor carpi radialis longus acted as an appropriate stabilizer of the wrist in 85 per cent of the extremities. Fourteen muscles had out-of-phase a

Cognitive mechanisms underlying sense of agency: Meta-analytic reviews of behavioral and neuroimaging studies.

Sense of agency refers to the feeling of controlling one's own actions, and, through them, events in the outside world. Contrasting cognitive theories emphasize either the importance of motor predictions or of retrospective inference in this ubiquitous experience. Temporal binding refers to the subjective compression of the time interval between voluntary actions and their outcomes and offers a reliable, quantitative measure of sense of agency. A rotating clock hand has been used to allow participants to indicate the perceived time of actions or outcomes. The perceived time of an action is shi

Contributions of altered stretch reflex coordination to arm impairments following stroke.

Patterns of stereotyped muscle coactivation, clinically referred to as synergies, emerge following stroke and impair arm function. Although researchers have focused on cortical contributions, there is growing evidence that altered stretch reflex pathways may also contribute to impairment. However, most previous reflex studies have focused on passive, single-joint movements without regard to their coordination during volitional actions. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of stroke on coordinated activity of stretch reflexes elicited in multiple arm muscles following multijoint

A Scoping Review of Epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation for Improving Motor and Voiding Function Following Spinal Cord Injury.

OBJECTIVES: To identify and synthesize the existing evidence on the effectiveness and safety of epidural spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for improving motor and voiding function and reducing spasticity following spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: This scoping review was performed according to the framework of Arksey and O'Malley. Comprehensive serial searches in multiple databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, LILACS, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) were performed to identify relevant publications that focused on epidural SCS for improving moto

Forebrain projection neurons target functionally diverse respiratory control areas in the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.

Eupnea is generated by neural circuits located in the ponto-medullary brainstem, but can be modulated by higher brain inputs which contribute to volitional control of breathing and the expression of orofacial behaviors, such as vocalization, sniffing, coughing, and swallowing. Surprisingly, the anatomical organization of descending inputs that connect the forebrain with the brainstem respiratory network remains poorly defined. We hypothesized that descending forebrain projections target multiple distributed respiratory control nuclei across the neuroaxis. To test our hypothesis, we made discre

Relationship of Reaction Time to Perception of a Stimulus and Volitionally Delayed Response.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Initiation of response in a simple reaction time (RT) task may precede conscious perception of the stimulus. Since volitionally delayed responses may require conscious perception of the stimulus before response initiation, it has been hypothesized that volitionally delayed responses will markedly delay RT. METHODS: We conducted two experiments with separate groups of healthy volunteers (n=16; n=13) who performed computerized simple and choice RT tasks. In the standard condition, we instructed the participants to respond to a visual stimulus by pushing a button as qui

Contribution of the respiratory muscles to the lactic acidosis of heavy exercise in COPD.

Patients with COPD usually are limited in their exercise tolerance by a limited ventilatory capacity. Lactic acidosis induced by exercise increases the stress on the ventilatory system due to CO2 generated by bicarbonate buffering and hydrogen ion stimulation. Patients with COPD are often observed to increase blood lactate levels at low levels of exercise. We wished to determine whether patients with COPD who experience lactic acidosis do so because of respiratory muscle production of lactate. Eight patients with moderate to severe COPD (FEV1 = 43.5 +/- 11.6% predicted) and 5 healthy subjects
