Public Health and Vulnerable Populations: Morbidity and Mortality Among People Ever Incarcerated in New York City Jails, 2001 to 2005.

The health of people ever incarcerated in New York City (NYC) jails during 2001 to 2005 was characterized by matching jail, shelter, mortality, sexually transmitted infection, HIV, and tuberculosis (TB) data from the NYC Departments of Health and Mental Hygiene, Correction, and Homeless Services. Compared with nonincarcerated people and those living in the lowest income NYC neighborhoods, those ever incarcerated had higher HIV prevalence and HIV case rates. Ever-incarcerated females also had higher rates of gonorrhea and syphilis than nonincarcerated females. Ever-incarcerated people who used

Building integrated mental health and medical programs for vulnerable populations post-disaster: connecting children and families to a medical home.

INTRODUCTION: Hurricane Katrina, a Category 3 hurricane, made landfall in August 2005. Approximately 1,500 deaths have been directly attributed to the hurricane, primarily in Louisiana and Mississippi. In New Orleans, Louisiana, most of the healthcare infrastructure was destroyed by flooding, and > 200,000 residents became homeless. Many of these internally displaced persons received transitional housing in trailer parks ("villages") under the auspices of the [US] Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). PROBLEM: The FEMA villages are isolated from residential communities, lack access to h

Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Infection Among Vulnerable Populations Relying on Public Health Services: Findings from the AVISA Study in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Understanding SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among vulnerable populations is crucial, especially in countries with universal but resource-constrained healthcare systems, such as Brazil. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, population-based household survey within the AVISA study, which aimed to assess seroprevalence among households enrolled in the Family Health Program (ESF). Two serological assays (rapid test and ECLIA) were used to detect anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Descriptive statistics were calculated and survey-adjusted Poisson regression models with robust variance were estimat

A synthesis of youth activation initiatives and their impact on tuberculosis knowledge, knowledge-seeking, and healthcare-seeking behavior in vulnerable populations.

BACKGROUND: Annually, up to 3 million people with tuberculosis (TB) fail to receive care due to delays in seeking TB care. Alongside active case finding, identifying cost-effective strategies that successfully mobilize vulnerable populations, such as young adults, to proactively present to care early is critical for ending the TB epidemic. Enabling populations to achieve optimized knowledge levels and proactively self-present to care may be more efficient than population-wide screening. METHODS: Between August 2021 and December 2023, five youth activation initiatives ("Be the Change", MumbraT

Mental Health Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on College Students: A Literature Review with Emphasis on Vulnerable and Minority Populations.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted higher education worldwide, imposing strict isolation measures, transitioning learning online, and exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities. This literature review examines the pandemic's impact on the mental health of college students, with a focus on those belonging to minority groups, including racial, ethnic, migrant, gender, sexuality-based, and low-income populations. While elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness were observed across all students, findings indicate that LGBTQ+ and low-income students faced the hig

Care and outcomes of first-time myocardial infarction among vulnerable populations in Denmark, 2003-22: a nationwide registry-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Mortality following a first-time myocardial infarction (MI) has declined, yet disparities in treatment and outcomes among potentially vulnerable groups remain unclear. We aimed to examine trends in treatment and mortality among first-time MI patients from 2003 to 2022 across eight potentially vulnerable subgroups in Denmark. METHODS: Using Danish registries, patients with a first-time MI between 2003 and 2022 were identified and divided into five-year calendar groups and eight subgroups ('age ≥80', 'low income', 'female', 'frail', 'non-Western immigrant', 'history of mental illnes

Exploring COVID-19 vaccine uptake and hesitancy among vulnerable populations in inner city Vancouver, Canada: Insights into characteristics and clinical outcomes.

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a profound impact on the health, social and economic well-being of people in Canada and around the world. To address vaccine disparity among vulnerable populations facing social-structural challenges, it is crucial to provide evidence-based information on the importance of completion of the recommended vaccination schedule. In this study, we investigated vaccination rates and variables as facilitators or barriers to COVID-19 vaccination among vulnerable populations living in Vancouver's inner-city residents. On a weekly basis, a team (including health care provi

The Perceived Impact and Usability of a Care Management and Coordination System in Delivering Services to Vulnerable Populations: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: People with complex needs, such as those experiencing homelessness, require concurrent, seamless support from multiple social service agencies. Sonoma County, California has one of the nation's largest homeless populations among largely suburban communities. To support client-centered care, the county deployed a Care Management and Coordination System (CMCS). This system comprised the Watson Care Manager (WCM), a front-end system, and Connect 360, which is an integrated data hub that aggregates information from various systems into a single client record. OBJECTIVE: The aim of thi

Impact of nutrition-sensitive agricultural interventions on dietary diversity and selected nutritional outcomes among vulnerable populations in Ethiopia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition continues to be a significant public health issue in Ethiopia, disproportionately affecting children under five years of age, pregnant and lactating women, and low-income households. Nutrition-sensitive agricultural (NSA) interventions are agricultural strategies specifically designed to enhance nutrition by improving food availability, access, and dietary quality in a population. These interventions have been increasingly advocated to address the root causes of malnutrition. However, their effectiveness in enhancing dietary diversity and nutritional outcomes in Ethiop

Implementation of Gastric Cancer Screening in Vulnerable Populations: A Comprehensive Analysis of the TOGAS Qualitative Study in the Romanian Roma Community.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gastric cancer (GC) remains a formidable global health burden. While incidence rates have declined in Europe, substantial differences between countries exist. In Romania, GC remains the sixth most prevalent cancer. This epidemiological divide is driven largely by the high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a class I carcinogen. Despite the proven efficacy of "screen-and-treat" strategies in high-incidence Asian cohorts, the European Union currently lacks organized, population-based GC screening programs. The Romanian Roma community experiences profound socioeco

Diagnosing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children involved with child protection services: are current diagnostic guidelines acceptable for vulnerable populations?

Children involved with child protection services (CPS) are diagnosed and treated for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at higher rates than the general population. Children with maltreatment histories are much more likely to have other factors contributing to behavioural and attentional regulation difficulties that may overlap with or mimic ADHD-like symptoms, including language and learning problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, attachment difficulties, mood disorders and anxiety disorders. A higher number of children in the child welfare system are diagnosed with ADHD and pr

Age Is an Effect Modifier of Thrombectomy Benefit in a Socioeconomically Vulnerable Stroke Population.

OBJECTIVE: Randomized trials from high-income countries have shown that endovascular treatment (EVT) yields similar benefits in elderly and non-elderly patients with large vessel occlusion stroke (LVOS). However, evidence from low/middle-income countries remains scarce. We aimed to assess the impact of age on outcomes and determine whether age modifies the effect of EVT under the resource-limited conditions of a public healthcare system in a developing country. METHODS: Pre-specified subgroup analysis of the RESILIENT trial, a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial in Brazil comparing EVT
