Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) production from swine wastewater and waste vegetable oil by Cupriavidus necator in nonsterile bioreactors.

Swine wastewater (SW), rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, and waste vegetable oil (WVO) are abundant feedstocks with potential for microbial biopolymers production. However, high polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) yields under nonsterile conditions remain challenging due to inhibitory compounds and microbial competition. Here, we cultivated Cupriavidus necator DSM545 under nonsterile conditions with varying SW dilutions combined with WVO for PHA synthesis. Batch bioreactors containing two-thirds (v/v) non-centrifuged wastewater yielded the highest polyhydroxybutyrate titers of 6.8 ± 0.1 gPHB/L, with C.

Production of low-sulfur fuels from catalytic pyrolysis of waste tires using formulated red mud catalyst.

Waste tires (WT) are produced in millions of tons per annum and their safe disposal is always a major environmental challenge because of fire hazards and the increasing cost of landfills. WT has high organic matter content that can be converted into fuels and chemicals if suitable technologies can be developed. Herein we report the in situ catalytic pyrolysis of WT using formulated red mud catalyst to produce low sulfur fuel that can be fractionated or can be used without fractionation. The in situ catalytic pyrolysis was conducted at 450-550 °C using formulated red mud catalyst. The yield of

Innovative process for sulphur recovery from waste incineration flue gases: production of marketable sodium bisulphite solution.

This study presents an innovative process for recovering sulphur from hazardous waste incineration flue gases, designed to produce a marketable sodium bisulphite solution while ensuring complete SO2 removal. This new process is characterized by a double absorption strategy at two different pH levels. The first step, at an acidic pH, generates the desired bisulphite solution, while the second step, at a basic pH, produces the sulphite solution for recycling into the first step and ensures total SO2 removal. The process's performance and feasibility were evaluated on a laboratory scale using a b

Towards passive bioremediation of dye-bearing effluents using hydrous ferric oxide wastes: Mechanisms, products and microbiology.

A novel, circular economy-inspired approach for the "passive" (non-powered and reagent-free) treatment of dye-bearing effluent is presented. The treatment utilises the biogeochemical interaction of dye-bearing wastewater with hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) bearing sludges. The work presented demonstrates for the first time the reuse of HFO-rich waste sludges from potable water and mine water treatment. The waste was used directly without modification or reagent addition, as media/substrate in simple flow-through reactors for the decolourisation and biodegradation of methyl orange (MO) and mixed dy

Optimization of medium composition and fermentation conditions for α-ketoglutaric acid production from biodiesel waste by Yarrowia lipolytica.

This work demonstrates the ability of the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica cultivated on biodiesel waste to synthesize α-ketoglutaric acid with a minimal content of pyruvic acid as the main byproduct. The key factor promoting the microbial production of α-ketoglutaric acid from the waste is a strong deficiency of thiamine in the cultivation medium. The production of α-ketoglutaric acid by the yeast can be regulated by changing the concentration of nitrogen, iron, zinc, copper, and manganese in the medium, as well as by pH medium and the aeration rate. The optimization of these parameters in flask exp

Molecular ecology of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B methylases in waste lagoons and subsurface waters associated with swine production.

RNA methylase genes are common antibiotic resistance determinants for multiple drugs of the macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B (MLS(B)) families. We used molecular methods to investigate the diversity, distribution, and abundance of MLS(B) methylases in waste lagoons and groundwater wells at two swine farms with a history of tylosin (a macrolide antibiotic structurally related to erythromycin) and tetracycline usage. Phylogenetic analysis guided primer design for quantification of MLS(B) resistance genes found in tylosin-producing Streptomyces (tlr(B), tlr(D)) and commensal/pathogenic

The role of solvent soaking and pretreatment temperature in microwave-assisted pyrolysis of waste tea powder: Analysis of products, synergy, pyrolysis index, and reaction mechanism.

This study focuses on microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) of fresh waste tea powder and torrefied waste tea powder as feedstocks. Solvents including benzene, acetone, and ethanol were used for soaking feedstocks. The feedstock torrefaction temperature (at 150 °C) and solvents soaking enhanced the yields of char (44.2-59.8 wt%) and the oil (39.8-45.3 wt%) in MAP. Co-pyrolysis synergy induced an increase in the yield of gaseous products (4.7-20.1 wt%). The average heating rate varied in the range of 5-25 °C/min. The energy consumption in MAP of torrefied feedstock (1386 KJ) significantly decrease

Sustainable hydrogen and vivianite recovery from waste activated sludge in electro-fermentation: Perspectives of product regulation and microbial interaction.

Zero-valent iron mediated electro-fermentation (EF) has recently emerged as a promising strategy for the synchronous hydrogen and vivianite recovery from waste activated sludge (WAS), while the mechanism of production regulation and microbial interaction still remains unclear. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen and phosphorus recovery from prefermented sludge via EF was performed. The substrate reduction (∼2500 mg COD/L, fermentation liquid was diluted 1:1) resulted in the highest hydrogen yield (25.5 mmol/g COD) and complete phosphate recovery at 2 d, the recovered vivianite
