Determinants of Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices of Children With Severe Acute Malnutrition in Agrarian and Pastoralist Settings of Ethiopia.

Previous research has established determinants of young child feeding (IYCF) practices in the general child population, but determinants of these practices in children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) are unknown. This study assessed the determinants of IYCF practices among children aged 6-23 months with SAM and under SAM treatment in a pastoralist and a predominantly agrarian setting in Ethiopia. As part of the baseline survey for the R-SWITCH cluster randomized control trial, we screened ~28,000 under-fives and included 486 children aged 6-23 months with SAM and under SAM treatment. Mult

Real-time impacts of air pollution on the health, well-being, and daily life of children and young people in Delhi and Dhaka.

Air pollution is a major global health threat, with children and young people (CYP) among the most vulnerable. Delhi (India) and Dhaka (Bangladesh) are two of the world's most polluted cities, with persistently high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). This study aimed to generate CYP-centered evidence on the real-time impacts of air pollution in these cities by comparing health, well-being, and daily activities during periods of high air pollution and good air quality, while also capturing CYP's ideas for air quality management. A cross-sectional, real-time digital survey was conducted

Exploring the Paradoxical Relationship of a Creb 3 Regulatory Factor Missense Variant With Body Mass Index and Diabetes Among Samoans: Protocol for the Soifua Manuia (Good Health) Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity and diabetes in Samoa, like many other Pacific Island nations, has reached epidemic proportions. Although the etiology of these conditions can be largely attributed to the rapidly changing economic and nutritional environment, a recently identified genetic variant, rs373863828 (CREB 3 regulatory factor, CREBRF: c.1370G>A p.[R457Q]) is associated with increased odds of obesity, but paradoxically, decreased odds of diabetes. OBJECTIVE: The overarching goal of the Soifua Manuia (Good Health) study was to precisely characterize the association of the CREBRF v

Dorsal flexion of head and neck for rigid oesophagoscopy--a caution for hidden foreign bodies dropped into the epipharynx.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, 98% of children in Zimbabwe received breastmilk, however only 40% of babies under six months were exclusively breastfed 24 h prior to data collection. A 2014 survey revealed that Matabeleland South Province had the country's highest starvation rates and food insecurities were rife. This study aimed at investigating maternal, infant, household, environmental and cultural factors influencing exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) practice in Gwanda District. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2018. Interviews used pretested structured questionnaires

Evaluation of a face-washing behaviour change intervention for trachoma prevention in Oromia, Ethiopia (Stronger SAFE): secondary outcomes of a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Facial cleanliness is a key component of the current strategy to interrupt transmission of Chlamydia trachomatis and achieve trachoma elimination but robust evidence to support its use is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a community-based, enhanced face-washing intervention for trachoma prevention. METHODS: Stronger SAFE was a cluster-randomised controlled trial conducted in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Eligible clusters (each comprising about 90 households) from zones with high prevalence of trachoma were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1) to one of four groups. Groups 1 and

Perceived impacts of a pilot agricultural livelihood and microfinance intervention on agricultural practices, food security and nutrition for Kenyans living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Agriculture is the primary source of income and household food for >75% of rural Kenyans, including people living with HIV (PLHIV), making agricultural yields an important factor in food security and nutrition. Previous studies have shown the interconnectedness of food insecurity, malnutrition, and poor HIV health by elucidating that having one of these conditions increases the likelihood and severity of having another. However, few studies have explored the linkages between agricultural practices, food security and nutrition for PLHIV, or how agricultural livelihood intervention

Impact of indoor Air Pollution on the Linear growth of children in Jimma, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Stunting in children is the term for reduced linear growth and development, which is frequently brought on by a persistently inadequate diet, recurrent infections and chronic diseases or poor health conditions. Apart from the classic covariates of stunting, which include diet and illness, the relative contribution of household air pollution to chronic nutrition conditions is least studied. Hence, this study is conducted to investigate the impact of household air pollution on the linear growth of under-five children in Jimma town, Ethiopia. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was e

Viewing the US presidential electoral map through the lens of public health.

Health, disease, and mortality vary greatly at the county level, and there are strong geographical trends of disease in the United States. Healthcare is and has been a top priority for voters in the U.S., and an important political issue. Consequently, it is important to determine what relationship voting patterns have with health, disease, and mortality, as doing so may help guide appropriate policy. We performed a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between voting patterns and over 150 different public health and wellbeing variables at the county level, comparing all states, including

A geriatrician's approach to managing the complex older adult with obesity.

The prevalence of obesity in older adults is rapidly increasing due to the demographic shift occurring globally. Older adults with obesity face health care challenges due to multimorbidity, functional dependency, and disability. This population often has prior history of struggles through weight-loss attempts during the middle years of life. Therefore, weight-loss intervention needs a personalized approach, taking into consideration weight-loss attempts, relapse, and life events, including bariatric surgery, functional limitations, psychosocial status, and current residential environment. Women with Gaucher Disease.

Gaucher disease is an inherited disorder in which there is a deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase, which leads to the accumulation of glucosylceramide. Although much scientific evidence is now available, there is still limited data on the impact on the different life stages of women with this disease. Among other alterations, a delay in menarche has been described, although it has not been related to fertility problems. Menorrhagia is relatively frequent, being related to the presence of thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopathies or coagulation disorders. On the other hand, pregnancy planning

Travel-Related Diagnoses Among U.S. Nonmigrant Travelers or Migrants Presenting to U.S. GeoSentinel Sites - GeoSentinel Network, 2012-2021.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: During 2012-2021, the volume of international travel reached record highs and lows. This period also was marked by the emergence or large outbreaks of multiple infectious diseases (e.g., Zika virus, yellow fever, and COVID-19). Over time, the growing ease and increased frequency of travel has resulted in the unprecedented global spread of infectious diseases. Detecting infectious diseases and other diagnoses among travelers can serve as sentinel surveillance for new or emerging pathogens and provide information to improve case identification, clinical management, and public

Investigating socioecological obesogenic factors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Obesity-related information in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is limited, and research findings are contradictory. Thus, this study aimed to use a nationwide non-clinical sample to examine the association of sociological factors with overweight status in children with ASD and reveal the degree of differences in the risk factors for overweight in children with and without ASD. The data for this cross-sectional study, based on the modified ecological system theory model, were obtained from the 2019 National Survey of Children's Health. The weighted logistic regressions were perform
