Impact of White Matter Hyperintensities on Nonverbal Cognition Through Structural Disconnections in Poststroke Aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Nonverbal cognitive deficits in poststroke aphasia remain poorly understood. They may result from direct stroke damage or disconnections of preserved cortical regions due to white matter injury, which may be worsened by white matter hyperintensities (WMH). Here, we examined the prevalence of nonverbal cognitive deficits in chronic poststroke aphasia and whether WMH-related disconnections contribute to these deficits beyond those caused by stroke lesions. METHODS: Individuals with chronic left hemisphere ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke were enrolled between 2012 and 2021. Nonverbal

Neuropsychological deficit profiles for service members with mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychological deficits are generally assessed in terms of absolute level of functioning, e.g. high average, average, low average, although there is increased interest in calculating indices of relative degree of decline, e.g. mild, moderate, severe. OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in demographic, psychiatric, and military-specific characteristics for relative degree of decline in neuropsychological profiles attributed to traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) among service members (SMs). METHODS: Data were drawn from an existing clinical database of 269 SMs who received neuropsyc

Comparison of cognitive ability and its distribution between men with autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Clarification of the strengths and weaknesses of cognitive ability is essential to our understanding of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, whether individuals with these conditions exhibit distinct patterns of cognitive ability remains unclear. To address this point, we aimed to compare the cognitive profiles of patients with autism spectrum disorder with those of patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder by placing special emphasis on the distribution of cognitive function within each group. METHODS:

The effect of repetition on pronoun resolution in patients with memory impairment.

Referring to things in the world - that woman, her idea, she - is a central component of language. Understanding reference requires the listener to keep track of the unfolding discourse history while integrating multiple sources of information to interpret the speech stream as it unfolds in time. Pronouns are a common way to establish reference. But due to their impoverished form, to understand them listeners must relate features of the pronoun (e.g., gender, animacy) with existing representations of potential discourse referents. Successful referential processing seems to place demands on mem

Specific Language Impairment and Reading Disability: Categorical Distinction or Continuum?

Specific language impairment (SLI) and reading disability (RD) are familial, moderately heritable comorbid developmental disorders. The key deficit of SLI is oral language, whereas children with RD exhibit impairment in learning to read. The present study examines the possible co-occurrence of RD and SLI and the nature of this co-occurrence at a linguistic and a cognitive level in an orthographically consistent language. Four groups of children participated in the study: an RD group ( n = 10), an SLI group ( n = 13), a possible comorbid group ( n = 9), and a control-no deficit group ( n = 20).

Deficits in strategy application following frontal lobe damage in man.

A quantitative investigation of the ability to carry out a variety of cognitive tasks was performed in 3 patients who had sustained traumatic injuries which involved prefrontal structures. All 3 had severe difficulties in 2 tests which required them to carry out a number of fairly simple but open-ended tasks over a 15-30 min period. They typically spent too long on individual tasks. All patients scored well on tests of perception, language and intelligence and 2 performed well on a variety of other tests of frontal lobe function. Explanations for their difficulty on the multiple subgoal tasks

The relationship between sleep quality and cognitive performance in a sample of Colombian adults.

Sleep plays a vital role in cognitive regulation, memory consolidation and brain health. In Colombia, sleep patterns may be influenced by cultural and socioeconomic factors such as co-sleeping, occupational stress and limited healthcare access, which can exacerbate sleep-related disorders like sleep apnoea. This study examined the relationship between objectively measured sleep quality and cognitive performance in Colombian adults with sleep apnoea. We hypothesised that poorer sleep quality, which is characterised by lower efficiency and more apnoea (hypopnoea events), would be associated with

Children and adolescents previously treated with glucocorticoids display lower verbal intellectual abilities.

AIM: Perinatal exposure to glucocorticoids has been associated with adverse cerebral effects, but little is known about their effect on cognitive development and exposure later in childhood. This study examined intellectual abilities, memory and behavioural problems in children previously treated with glucocorticoids. METHODS: We evaluated 38 children aged from seven to 16 years, who had been treated with glucocorticoids for rheumatic disease or nephrotic syndrome, together with 42 healthy controls matched for age, gender and parental education. Neuropsychological impairment in chronic cocaine abusers.

Twenty chronic cocaine abusers were compared with age and education matched controls using standardized neuropsychological assessment procedures to determine whether the cocaine abusers were impaired. Fifty percent of the cocaine abusers in contrast to 15% of the controls scored in the impaired range on the summary index of the Neuropsychological Screening Exam. The cocaine abusers also performed more poorly on the Halstead Category Test, the Symbol Digit Modalities Test, the WAIS-R Arithmetic Test, and a test of verbal memory (forgetting). In the cocaine abuser sample, neuropsychological perf

Neurobehavioural correlates in older children and adolescents with obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea.

AIM: The relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and poorer neurobehavioural outcomes in school-age children is well established, but the relationship in obese children and adolescents, in whom OSA is more common, is not so well established. We aimed to investigate this relationship in 10-18-year-olds. METHODS: Thirty-one participants with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 32.3 ± 4.9 enrolled. BMI-for-age cut-offs were used to define obesity. Participants underwent polysomnography and were classified into OSA (apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) > 2 per hour) and non-OSA (AHI ≤ 2) groups.

Residual memory dysfunction in recurrent major depressive disorder--a longitudinal study from Juntendo University Mood Disorder Project.

BACKGROUND: Depression may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Large cohort studies have shown that recurrent depression is associated with a risk of developing dementia. Other studies have documented smaller hippocampal volume in patients with recurrent depression. It is speculative that a greater risk of developing dementia may result from a higher number of previous depressive episodes. This study compared patients with recurrent and single-episode depression in the remitted stage, and healthy controls to elucidate the impact of the number of depressive episodes on memory.

[A case of cerebral infarction presenting as retrosplenial amnesia].

We report a 73-year-old right-handed female who presented with an acute amnesic syndrome. On November 18, 1991, she was admitted to a local hospital complaining of sudden-onset vertigo and nausea, but immediately after the admission she developed an amnesic syndrome. On November 27, she was transferred to our hospital for further assessment of her memory disturbance. Neurologically she was normal except for mild right hemianopsia and increased deep tendon reflexes in the extremities. Neuropsychological assessments were performed over 3 weeks. She was always alert, attentive, and cooperative. S

Effects of qigong exercises on cognitive functioning in older adults with mild cognitive impairment: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is common among older adults. Qigong is a Chinese exercise that may enhance cognitive function. This review aims to investigate the effects of Qigong-based exercises on cognition in older adults with MCI. "PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, CNKI, Wanfang, SinoMed, VIP, and Web of Science" were searched until May 2026. Quality was evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2). Twenty-one trials (1429 participants) met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed significant improvements in global cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment: SMD

Autobiographical memory and social problem-solving in Asperger syndrome.

Difficulties in social interaction are a central feature of Asperger syndrome. Effective social interaction involves the ability to solve interpersonal problems as and when they occur. Here we examined social problem-solving in a group of adults with Asperger syndrome and control group matched for age, gender and IQ. We also assessed autobiographical memory, on a cueing task and during social problem-solving, and examined the relationship between access to specific past experiences and social problem-solving ability. Results demonstrated a social problem-solving impairment in the Asperger grou

Pituitary volume reduction in schizophrenia following cognitive behavioural therapy.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for psychosis (CBTp) aims to lower the stress of psychotic symptoms. Given that the pituitary is involved in stress regulation, CBT-led stress reduction may be accompanied by a change in pituitary volume. This study aimed to determine whether CBTp reduces pituitary volume in schizophrenia. The relation between pre-therapy memory and CBTp-led pituitary volume change was also examined given that poor memory relates to a blunted cortisol awakening response, denoting impaired stress response, in schizophrenia. Pituitary volume was measured at baseline in 40 schi
