A hydroponic system for microgravity plant experiments.

The construction of a permanently manned space station will provide the opportunity to grow plants for weeks or months in orbit for experiments or food production. With this opportunity comes the need for a method to provide plants with a continuous supply of water and nutrients in microgravity. The Capillary Effect Root Environment System (CERES) uses capillary forces to maintain control of circulating plant nutrient solution in the weightless environment of an orbiting spacecraft. The nutrient solution is maintained at a pressure slightly less than the ambient air pressure while it flows on

Effects of a visual-vestibular stimulus on the vestibulo-ocular reflex.

Exposure before flight to an environment that provides altered visual-vestibular relationships similar to those seen in weightlessness might facilitate adaptation to spaceflight. Fifteen normal subjects were exposed for 0, 5, and 20 min to an abnormal visual-vestibular environment in which the vestibular sensation of lateral tilt was associated with the visual impression of lateral translation. Lateral eye movement elicited by similar tilt in darkness was measured before and at intervals after the exposure. Of the 15 subjects, 12 showed increased VOR amplitude following the exposure, but this

Effect of Hong Huang Tang on memory enhancement and mitigation of microgravity-induced oxidative stress in C. elegans.

Ziziphus jujuba Mill. (ZJ) is a traditional medicinal plant known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, yet its role in learning and cognitive regulation remains insufficiently explored. Huang Jing (Polygonatum sibiricum), a Qi- and Yin-tonifying herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, has historically been used to combat fatigue, support brain function, delay aging, and regulate metabolic balance. In this study, we evaluated the neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of the combined formulation Hong Huang Tang in Caenorhabditis elegans under simulated microgra

Muscle-specific atrophy of the lower limb musculature in response to simulated microgravity exposure in women.

Despite the increased involvement of women in spaceflight missions, the efforts to understand changes in skeletal muscle health in women with microgravity exposure have been limited. The goal of the current investigation was to expand the limited knowledge on skeletal muscle atrophy responses to microgravity in women. Eight women (34 ± 4 yr) underwent 60 days of simulated microgravity (6° head-down tilt bedrest), and changes in MRI-determined skeletal muscle volume of 17 lower limb muscles were determined after 1 and 2 mo. Muscle volume decreased (P < 0.05) in all 17 muscles of the women after

Velocity storage: its multiple roles.

Our research described in this article was motivated by the puzzling finding of the Skylab M131 experiments: head movements made while rotating that are nauseogenic and disorienting on Earth are innocuous in a weightless, 0-g environment. We describe a series of parabolic flight experiments that directly addressed this puzzle and discovered the gravity-dependent responses to semicircular canal stimulation, consistent with the principles of velocity storage. We describe a line of research that started in a different direction, investigating dynamic balancing, but ended up pointing to the gravit

Feeling free, feeling 0-g!

Following the great success of the Student Parabolic Flight Campaigns that it organised in 1994 and 1995, ESA decided to make them an annual event for students from the Agency's Member States. An initiative of ESA's Education Office, the campaigns give talented students a unique opportunity to experience weightlessness whilst performing their own scientific experiments, and hopefully encourage them to consider pursuing a career in space. The fifth Student Parabolic Flight Campaign (SPFC) took place from Bordeaux-Merignac Airport in southwest France in the first weeks of September 2002, with mo

Cardiovascular responses to cold pressor and LBNP tests before and after 20-day-bedrest.

The orthostatic hypotension after weightlessness has been suggested mainly because of the blood volume reduction, and decrease in stroke volume and cardiac output as its consequence. However, since bedrest is characterized as removal of orthostasis and exercise, which are major physiological stressors to the autonomic nervous system in normal daily life of humans, thus it may be possible that general autonomic activity itself would be deconditioned in the central nervous system after bedrest. Thus, we hypothesized that 20-day bedrest may modify the cardiovascular responses to cold pressor test

Staying in bed to benefit ESA's astronauts and Europe's citizens.

Since Yuri Gagarin's historic first flight into space in April 1961, it has quickly become evident that the space environment influences the human body in many different ways and causes it to adapt in ways that can lead to problems when returning to Earth's gravity. Much research has been performed in the meantime and our understanding of what happens to our bodies in space improved considerably during the Mir space station and Space Shuttle/Spacelab era. However, many questions, particularly regarding how to counteract those changes that we now know take place, still need to be addressed thro

The case for space as a model of accelerated aging.

Aging is a complex biological and societal challenge, where modest advances can yield substantial clinical and economic benefits. While model organisms have uncovered key mechanisms of aging, their physiological relevance to humans remains limited. Astronauts offer a uniquely informative human model: despite being healthy and highly selected, they exhibit many hallmarks of aging and experience comparable declines in cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, cognitive and immune function-often on accelerated timelines. These changes are largely driven by four core exposures of the space environment: mic

Applications of the ocular trauma score (OTS) as a framework for spaceflight related ocular trauma (SROT) triage and management.

Spaceflight presents several unique challenges for the diagnosis and management of in-flight ocular trauma. Constrained medical resources, microgravity, and delayed access to advanced medical care require novel and unique approaches to ocular trauma. The Ocular Trauma Score (OTS), an evidence-based clinical tool, aids in establishing a prognosis for ocular injuries and offers a method of informed triage and management. As governmental space agencies and private space companies (e.g., SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic) rapidly increase the number and length of human spaceflight missions,

Microgravity and Cellular Biology: Insights into Cellular Responses and Implications for Human Health.

Microgravity, defined by minimal gravitational forces, represents a unique environment that profoundly influences biological systems, including human cells. This review examines the effects of microgravity on biological processes and their implications for human health. Microgravity significantly impacts the immune system by disrupting key mechanisms, such as T cell activation, cytokine production, and macrophage differentiation, leading to increased susceptibility to infections. In cancer biology, it promotes the formation of spheroids in cancer stem cells and thyroid cancer cells, which clos

The optic nerve in spaceflight: novel concepts in the pathogenesis of optic disc edema in microgravity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) encompasses a unique constellation of neuro-ocular findings in astronauts, including optic disc edema (ODE), globe flattening, chorioretinal folds, and hyperopic refractive shift. Although there are numerous neuro-ocular findings in SANS, the purpose of this review is to describe the novel, emerging concepts of the pathogenesis for the ODE specifically in SANS. RECENT FINDINGS: While the initial hypotheses on the pathogenesis of ODE in SANS focused on possible elevated intracranial pressures (i.e., papilledema), the most p

Exposure of volunteers to microgravity by dry immersion bed over 21 days results in gene expression changes and adaptation of T cells.

The next steps of deep space exploration are manned missions to Moon and Mars. For safe space missions for crew members, it is important to understand the impact of space flight on the immune system. We studied the effects of 21 days dry immersion (DI) exposure on the transcriptomes of T cells isolated from blood samples of eight healthy volunteers. Samples were collected 7 days before DI, at day 7, 14, and 21 during DI, and 7 days after DI. RNA sequencing of CD3+ T cells revealed transcriptional alterations across all time points, with most changes occurring 14 days after DI exposure. At day

Spaceflight Virology: What Do We Know about Viral Threats in the Spaceflight Environment?

Viruses constitute a significant part of the human microbiome, so wherever humans go, viruses are brought with them, even on space missions. In this mini review, we focus on the International Space Station (ISS) as the only current human habitat in space that has a diverse range of viral genera that infect microorganisms from bacteria to eukaryotes. Thus, we have reviewed the literature on the physical conditions of space habitats that have an impact on both virus transmissibility and interaction with their host, which include UV radiation, ionizing radiation, humidity, and microgravity. Also,

The immune system in space and microgravity.

Space flight and models that created conditions similar to those that occur during space flight have been shown to affect a variety of immunological responses. These have primarily been cell-mediated immune responses including leukocyte proliferation, cytokine production, and leukocyte subset distribution. The mechanisms and biomedical consequences of these changes remain to be established. Among the possible causes of space flight-induced alterations in immune responses are exposure to microgravity, exposure to stress, exposure to radiation, and many more as yet undetermined causes. Calcium metabolism in microgravity.

Unloading of weight bearing bones as induced by microgravity or immobilization has significant impacts on the calcium and bone metabolism and is the most likely cause for space osteoporosis. During a 4.5 to 6 month stay in space most of the astronauts develop a reduction in bone mineral density in spine, femoral neck, trochanter, and pelvis of 1%-1.6% measured by Dual Energy X-ray Absorption (DEXA). Dependent on the mission length and the individual turnover rates of the astronauts it can even reach individual losses of up to 14% in the femoral neck. Osteoporosis itself is defined as the deter

Cardiovascular adaptations, fluid shifts, and countermeasures related to space flight.

Significant progress has been made related to understanding cardiovascular adaptations to microgravity and development of countermeasures to improve crew re-adaptation to gravity. The primary ongoing issues are orthostatic intolerance after flight, reduced exercise capacity, the effect of vascular-smooth muscle loss on other physiologic systems, development of efficient and low-cost countermeasures to counteract these losses, and an understanding of fluid shift mechanisms. Previous animal studies of cardiovascular adaptations offer evidence that prolonged microgravity remodels walls of blood v

Perspective on the consequences of short- and long-duration space flight on human physiology.

During the past three decades, humans have made significant progress in accomplishing their aspirations for exploring the Moon and the planets. It is now appreciated that humans undergo a remarkable number of physiologic adaptations in microgravity that affect most physiologic systems. Space motion sickness was one of the first adaptations that humans experienced in microgravity. However, it is self-limiting and, most of the time, is effectively treated pharmacologically. Of particular concern is that, in microgravity, there is marked wasting of the skeletal musculature and skeleton that appea
