Estimation and potential ecological risk assessment of multiphase PAEs in mangrove wetlands in Dongzhai Harbor, Hainan.

With the application of plastic products, phthalates now widely occur in various environmental media. A large number of ecological risk assessment experiments have only been carried out on a single medium such as water or sediment. There are few reports of ecological risk assessments based on the phase states of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) such as the free dissolved state and the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) adsorption state. In this study, the concentrations of the free dissolved state, the DOC adsorption state, and the easily released PAEs in the sediments, as well as the dissolved organic

Free-living Microturbellarians (Platyhelminthes) from Wetlands in Southern Brazil, with the Description of Three New Species.

The Taim strict nature reserve (ESEC Taim) is a protected wetland (Ramsar site) in southern Brazil. Although the ESEC Taim harbours a broad conspicuous flora and fauna, this area lacks studies on free-living Platyhelminthes. Here, we describe three new species to science, one belonging to Macrostomorpha (Macrostomum itai n. sp.) and two belonging to Dalytyphloplanoida (Gieysztoria duopunctata n. sp. and G. hermes n. sp.). Macrostomum itai n. sp. differs from their congeners for its distinct stylet in "J"-shaped. Gieysztoria duopunctata n. sp. is distinguishable based on the crown-like penis st

Critically important antimicrobial resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Irish farm effluent and their removal in integrated constructed wetlands.

This study investigated the ability of Integrated Constructed Wetlands (ICWs) to remove critically important antimicrobial resistant organisms (AROs) from farm wastewater. Influent samples from the untreated farm waste and effluent samples taken at the end of the ICW system were collected monthly from four ICWs, serving four different farm types (suckler, dairy, dairy & poultry and pig). Using selective media to screen for the presence of carbapenemase resistant organisms, plasmid mediated and AmpC β-Lactamase producing organisms (ESBL/pAmpC) and fluoroquinolone resistant organisms, a total of

Quantifying the contribution rates of sulfonamide antibiotics removal mechanisms in constructed wetlands using multivariate statistical analysis.

The removal of antibiotics in subsurface flow constructed wetlands is performed through various removal mechanisms, such as adsorption, hydrolysis, microbial degradation and plant uptake. However, the contribution rates of the removal mechanisms in constructed wetlands are still not well studied. This study conducted a series of experiments and used multivariate statistical analysis to determine contribution rates for substrate adsorption, hydrolysis, and microbial degradation. Multiple stepwise regression analysis indicated that specific surface area and salt content were the main factors inf

Wetlands for Wellbeing: Piloting a Nature-Based Health Intervention for the Management of Anxiety and Depression.

Nature-based health interventions (NBIs) for the treatment of poor mental health are becoming increasingly common, yet evidence to support their effectiveness is lacking. We conduct a pilot study of a six-week intervention, aiming to engage individuals with wetland nature for the treatment of anxiety and/or depression. We employed a mixed methods design, using questionnaires, focus groups and semi-structured interviews to evaluate the intervention from the perspective of participants (n = 16) and healthcare professionals (n = 2). Results demonstrate significant improvements in mental health ac

Geochemical Factors Controlling Dissolved Elemental Mercury and Methylmercury Formation in Alaskan Wetlands of Varying Trophic Status.

The transformations of aqueous inorganic divalent mercury (Hg(II)i) to volatile dissolved gaseous mercury (Hg(0)(aq)) and toxic methylmercury (MeHg) govern mercury bioavailability and fate in northern ecosystems. This study quantified concentrations of aqueous mercury species (Hg(II)i, Hg(0)(aq), MeHg) and relevant geochemical constituents in pore waters of eight Alaskan wetlands that differ in trophic status (i.e., bog-to-fen gradient) to gain insight on processes controlling dark Hg(II)i reduction and Hg(II)i methylation. Regardless of wetland trophic status, positive correlations were obser

Metal Concentrations in Tissues of Gadwall and Common Teal from Miankaleh and Gomishan International Wetlands, Iran.

Miankaleh and Gomishan International Wetlands are important wintering areas for waterbirds in the Caspian Sea region. Previous studies revealed increased exposure to metals in some species of waterbirds using these wetlands. In this study, we examined concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in kidneys, liver, and pectoral muscle of wintering Gadwall (Anas strepera) and Common Teal (Anas crecca) collected in 2012. In addition, we measured concentrations of these elements in water and sediments from the collection sites. The genders differed in only one

Multi-stage hybrid subsurface flow constructed wetlands for treating piggery and dairy wastewater in cold climate.

This study followed three field-scale hybrid subsurface flow constructed wetland (CW) systems constructed in Hokkaido, northern Japan: piggery O (2009), dairy G (2011), and dairy S (2006). Treatment performance was monitored from the outset of operation for each CW. The ranges of overall purification efficiency for these systems were 70-86%, 40-85%, 71-90%, 91-96%, 94-98%, 84-97%, and 70-97% for total N (TN), NH4-N, total P, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand, suspended solid, and total Coliform, respectively. The hybrid system's removal rates were highest when influent lo

Nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands using nitritation/anammox and nitrification/ denitrification: effects of influent nitrogen concentration.

Simultaneous nitritation/anammox and nitrification/denitrification (SNAND) is a promising method to increase nitrogen removal from ammonium- and nitrate-rich wastewater. This study examined the effects of influent nitrogen concentrations on plant assimilation and microbial nitrogen removal via SNAND in three free water surface wetlands. Anammox and denitrification contributed 78 and 22%, respectively, of microbial removal of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). Nitrogen removal rates increased with influent concentrations in the low ranges of 17 to 105 mg N/L ammonium and 51 to 179 mg N/L TIN. Howe

Assessment of the effects of farming and conservation programs on pesticide deposition in high plains wetlands.

We examined pesticide contamination in sediments from depressional playa wetlands embedded in the three dominant land-use types in the western High Plains and Rainwater Basin of the United States including cropland, perennial grassland enrolled in conservation programs (e.g., Conservation Reserve Program [CRP]), and native grassland or reference condition. Two hundred and sixty four playas, selected from the three land-use types, were sampled from Nebraska and Colorado in the north to Texas and New Mexico in the south. Sediments were examined for most of the commonly used agricultural pesticid

Are methylmercury concentrations in the wetlands of Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia, Canada, dependent on geology?

In the relatively pristine ecosystem in Kejimkujik Park, Nova Scotia, methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in loons, Gavia immer, are among the highest recorded anywhere in the world. This study investigated the influence of bedrock lithology on MeHg concentrations in wetlands. Twenty-five different wetland field sites were sampled over four different bedrock lithologies; Kejimkujik monzogranite, black sulfidic slate, gray slate, and greywacke. Soil samples were analyzed for ethylmercury (EtHg), MeHg, total Hg, acid-volatile sulfides (AVS), organic matter, and water content as well as the biolo

Microplastic contamination in Ramsar wetlands: a systematic review of global sources, ecological impacts, and policy implications.

Ramsar wetlands, globally recognized for their ecological, hydrological, and socio-economic significance, are increasingly threatened by microplastic (MP) contamination. Despite mounting evidence of MPs in freshwater and coastal environments, no global synthesis has focused on MP contamination in Ramsar-designated wetlands. This study presents the first systematic global review of MP contamination in Ramsar wetlands by compiling peer-reviewed studies (April 2012-May 2025). This review addresses MP sources, transport pathways, contamination levels in surface water, sediment, and biota especiall

Mitigating bio-clogging in subsurface flow constructed wetlands via quorum quenching: Performance evaluation and mechanistic insights.

Subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSFCWs) have been widely applied for sewage wastewater remediation due to the efficient utilization of wetland space and considerable improvement in treatment capacity. However, bio-clogging driven by the accumulation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) severely restricts their longevity and hydraulic performance. To address this issue, two quorum quenching (QQ) strategies based on Rhodococcus sp. BH4 and porcine kidney acylase I were developed to alleviate bio-clogging in SSFCWs. Compared with the control, the two QQ treatments increased hydraulic

Living on the edge: agricultural land use increases genotoxic damage in amphibians on southern brazilian wetlands.

Southern Brazil is a key agricultural region in South America, where wetland ecosystems are increasingly impacted by irrigated rice cultivation. Amphibians are particularly sensitive to environmental contamination due to their permeable skin and biphasic life cycle, making them effective bioindicators of ecosystem health. This landscape forms a mosaic of croplands and natural habitats, exposing wildlife to agrochemical contamination. In this study, we evaluated erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities (NAs) in the arboreal amphibian Dendropsophus sanborni and the aquatic amphibian Pseudis minuta, bot

Top-down/bottom-up consortia achieve robust γ-HCH degradation and reduced methanogenic contribution in wetlands.

UNLABELLED: Generalist non-obligate organochlorine-degrading bacteria (ODB) play an important role in the bioremediation of γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH), yet their ecological roles and functional mechanisms remain underexplored. In this study, we used both "top-down" and "bottom-up" strategies to construct two functional consortia (M and Y13) based on non-obligate ODB. Both consortia demonstrated efficient degradation in sediment microcosms, reducing γ-HCH (C/C₀) to 63.0% (M) and 56.1% (Y13). Simultaneously, functional microbial consortia inoculation significantly suppressed the CO₂ reducti

Holocene man-occupied caves and transformed wetlands as facilitating factors for Leishmania infantum in South America.

BACKGROUND: In the Holocene, South American humans transformed large extensions of the continent, especially in cave ecosystems. Such transformations produced predictable eutrophic habitats that could have attracted foxes and further favored the adaptation of Lutzomyia longipalpis, insect vector of American Visceral Leishmaniosis (AVL), to human-contaminated habitats. OBJECTIVES: Here we present spatial analyses on the distribution of caves, Holocene human populations, the present-days main wild reservoirs of Leishmania infantum, Cerdocyon thous and Lycalopex vetulus, and the vector Lu. longi

Clarifying the correlations between hydraulic indicators evaluating the hydraulic performance of free water surface constructed wetlands.

Previous studies have shown a strong linear correlation between the common hydraulic indicators of free water surface constructed wetlands (FWS CWs), which results in the waste of computing resources and confusion in evaluating the hydraulic performance of FWS CWs. There is an urgent need to define a relatively independent and authoritative hydraulic indicator. In this study, based on three years' data, the correlations among five representative hydraulic indicators, that is, short-circuit index (φ10), Morrill dispersion index (MDI), effective volume ratio (e), moment index (MI), and hydraulic

HYDROLOGICAL, PHYSICAL, AND CHEMICAL FUNCTIONS AND CONNECTIVITY OF NON-FLOODPLAIN WETLANDS TO DOWNSTREAM WATERS: A REVIEW.

We reviewed the scientific literature on non-floodplain wetlands (NFWs), freshwater wetlands typically located distal to riparian and floodplain systems, to determine hydrological, physical, and chemical functioning and stream and river network connectivity. We assayed the literature for source, sink, lag, and transformation functions, as well as factors affecting connectivity. We determined NFWs are important landscape components, hydrologically, physically, and chemically affecting downstream aquatic systems. NFWs are hydrologic and chemical sources for other waters, hydrologically connectin

Land use effects on pesticides in sediments of prairie pothole wetlands in North and South Dakota.

Prairie potholes are the dominant wetland type in the intensively cultivated northern Great Plains of North America, and thus have the potential to receive pesticide runoff and drift. We examined the presence of pesticides in sediments of 151 wetlands split among the three dominant land use types, Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), cropland, and native prairie, in North and South Dakota in 2011. Herbicides (glyphosate and atrazine) and fungicides were detected regularly, with no insecticide detections. Glyphosate was the most detected pesticide, occurring in 61% of all wetlands, with atrazine

Environmental, geographic and trophic influences on methylmercury concentrations in macroinvertebrates from lakes and wetlands across Canada.

Macroinvertebrates are a key vector in the transfer of methylmercury (MeHg) to fish. However, the factors that affect MeHg concentrations and bioaccumulation in these organisms are not as well understood as for fish, and studies on a broad geographic scale are lacking. In this study, we gathered published and unpublished MeHg and carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen (δ(15)N) stable isotope data for freshwater macroinvertebrates from 119 lakes and wetlands across seven Canadian provinces, along with selected physical, chemical and biological characteristics of these systems. Overall, water pH was the m
