Comparison of White-to-White Measurements Between Pentacam and MS-39 and Their Relationship with Visual and Refractive Status.

OBJECTIVES: To compare white-to-white (WTW) measurements obtained by Pentacam and MS-39 and to assess their relationship with visual and refractive status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 126 participants (one eye per participant). Visual acuity was measured with and without correction using a Snellen chart and converted to logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR). Refractive status was determined by manifest refraction, and the spherical equivalent was calculated. WTW measurements were determined using Pentacam and MS-39. For paired compari

An unexpected advantage of whiteness in horses: the most horsefly-proof horse has a depolarizing white coat.

White horses frequently suffer from malign skin cancer and visual deficiencies owing to their high sensitivity to the ultraviolet solar radiation. Furthermore, in the wild, white horses suffer a larger predation risk than dark individuals because they can more easily be detected. In spite of their greater vulnerability, white horses have been highly appreciated for centuries owing to their natural rarity. Here, we show that blood-sucking tabanid flies, known to transmit disease agents to mammals, are less attracted to white than dark horses. We also demonstrate that tabanids use reflected pola

Chloroplast genome sequence of the hybrid variety 'Silky White', a white-flowered calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica).

Calla lily (Zantedeschia spp.), native to southern Africa, is a very attractive plant and is used as cut flowers, potted flowering plants, and bedding plants. It can be distinguished into two groups depending on the color of the flower. The chloroplast genome of the hybrid variety 'Silky White' (Z. aethiopica × Z. aethiopica), a white-flowered calla lily, was sequenced using Illumina sequencing technology. The total length of the chloroplast genome was 168,880 bp with a GC content of 35.59%. It comprised a large single copy (LSC) region of 89,391 bp, a small single copy (SSC) region of 31,849

Association between hypertension and neurovascular inflammation in both normal-appearing white matter and white matter hyperintensities.

The major vascular cause of dementia is cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), including white matter hyperintensities (WMH) amongst others. While the underlying pathology of SVD remains unclear, chronic hypertension and neuroinflammation are recognized as important risk factors for SVD and for the conversion of normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) to WMH. Unfortunately, most studies investigating the role of neuroinflammation in WMH relied on peripheral blood markers, e.g., markers for systemic or vascular inflammation, as a proxy for inflammation in the brain itself. However, it is unknown whe

ZBTB16 Overexpression Enhances White Adipogenesis and Induces Brown-Like Adipocyte Formation of Bovine White Intramuscular Preadipocytes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Our study aims to characterize functions of ZBTB16 gene in the process of intramuscular fat (IMF) deposition and metabolism of bovine, thereby providing insights into mechanisms for the use of ZBTB16 in fat management. METHODS: Primary preadipocytes derived from bovine IMF tissue were isolated and used as the in vitro cell model. An adenovirus Ad-ZBTB16 was transfected into bovine preadipocytes to overexpress the ZBTB16 gene. By using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), western blotting, Oil Red-O staining, glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) activity assay, and cell

Mortality risks in different subtypes of white-coat hypertension: implications for the diagnosis of white-coat hypertension.

BACKGROUND: The risk associated with white-coat hypertension is controversial. We evaluated mortality risks in white-coat hypertension subtypes defined according to the circadian pattern of blood pressure (BP) elevation over 24 h. METHODS: In 44 119 patients with elevated office BP, white-coat hypertension subtypes were defined as normal BP in all circadian periods (day, night, and 24-h, 12 192 patients), normal 24-h, with nocturnal BP elevation (4368), and normal daytime, with 24-h BP elevation (3525). Associations of each subtype with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were estimated by

Performance of the automated BpTRU measurement device in the assessment of white-coat hypertension and white-coat effect.

OBJECTIVES: BpTRU (VSM MedTech Ltd, Vancouver, Canada) is an automated oscillometric device that provides serial blood pressure measurements in an office setting in the absence of a healthcare professional. We sought to determine whether the white-coat effect is reduced by a blood pressure measurement protocol using BpTRU compared with casual office measurements. Secondarily, we also sought to determine whether a blood pressure measurement protocol using BpTRU reduced white-coat hypertension compared with the casual office measurements, and reduced white-coat effect and white-coat hypertension

Two axes of white matter development.

Despite decades of neuroimaging research, how white matter develops along the length of major tracts in humans remains unknown. Here, we identify fundamental patterns of white matter maturation by examining developmental variation along major, long-range cortico-cortical tracts in youth ages 5-23 years using diffusion MRI from three large-scale, cross-sectional datasets (total N = 2716). Across datasets, we delineate two replicable axes of human white matter development. First, we find a deep-to-superficial axis, in which superficial tract regions near the cortical surface exhibit greater age-

White matter disconnection in acquired criminality.

Structural brain imaging is increasingly introduced as evidence in criminal trials. A key imaging abnormality identified in criminal populations is alteration to the right uncinate fasciculus but it remains unclear whether these changes play a causal role in criminal behavior. Lesion studies of acquired criminality offer the opportunity to assess the causal role of focal disruption of specific white matter connections in criminal behavior. We studied lesion locations of focal brain damage associated with new onset criminal behavior compared to lesions associated with 21 diverse neuropsychiatri

White matter injury after brain ischemia.

Ischemic white matter injury (WMI) is a significant concern in various clinical settings, particularly affecting the elderly and those with comorbidities such as hypoxia and hyperglycemia. Ischemic WMI can be caused either by primary WM ischemia, or secondary axonal injury as a result of the loss of the "remote" axonal parent neurons or the depletion of adhesive and neurotrophic molecules following post-synaptic neuronal death in the grey matter after focal ischemia. While neurons are highly vulnerable to ischemia, potentially undergoing cell death after an ischemic duration longer than a just

Serum albumin and white matter hyperintensities.

Urine albumin, high in kidney disease, predicts cardiovascular incidents and CNS white matter hyperintensity (WMH) burdens. Serum albumin - a more general biomarker which can be low in several disorders - including kidney and liver disease, malnutrition, and inflammation - also predicts cardiovascular events and is associated with cognitive impairment in several clinical populations; relations between serum albumin and WMH prevalence, however, have rarely been evaluated. In a sample of 160 individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), 142 infected with HIV, and 102 healthy controls, the hypothe

Serum albumin and white matter hyperintensities.

People living with HIV and those diagnosed with alcohol use disorders (AUD) relative to healthy individuals commonly have low levels of serum albumin, substantiated as an independent predictor of cardiovascular events. White matter hyperintensities (WMH)-a neuroimaging feature of cerebral small vessel disease-are also related to cardiovascular disease. Despite consensus regarding associations between high levels of urine albumin and WMH prevalence, and low serum albumin levels and impaired cognitive functioning, relations between serum albumin and WMH burdens have rarely been evaluated. Here,

Subcutaneous Transplantation of White Adipose Tissue.

In the research setting, white adipose tissue (WAT) transplantation, also known as fat transplantation, is often used to understand the physiological function of adipocytes or associated stromal vascular cells such as macrophages in the context of local and systemic metabolism. The mouse is the most common animal model used where WAT from a donor is transferred either to a subcutaneous site of the same organism or to a subcutaneous region of a recipient. Here, we describe in detail the procedure for heterologous fat transplantation, and, given the need for survival surgery, peri- and postopera

Astrocyte Mitochondria in White-Matter Injury.

This review summarizes the diverse structure and function of astrocytes to describe the bioenergetic versatility required of astrocytes that are situated at different locations. The intercellular domain of astrocyte mitochondria defines their roles in supporting and regulating astrocyte-neuron coupling and survival against ischemia. The heterogeneity of astrocyte mitochondria, and how subpopulations of astrocyte mitochondria adapt to interact with other glia and regulate axon function, require further investigation. It has become clear that mitochondrial permeability transition pores play a ke
