[Analysis of prevention of diseases in travellers on the basis of latest results in travel medicine].

When we survey the possibilities of prevention in travel medicine, it is soon detected that the "classical" or "infectology-oriented" approach of prevention (vaccination - chemoprophylaxis - pretravel advice) cannot respond to all peritravel medical problems. These newly arisen challenges require a new, complex outlook for travel medicine, mainly in the field of prevention, treatment and management of travel-related illnesses. Although travellers are still exposed to various infectious diseases, which are mostly preventable by the primary prevention methods (biomedical prophylaxis), the majori

A mass rearing cost calculator for the control of Culex quinquefasciatus in Hawai'i using the incompatible insect technique.

BACKGROUND: Hawai'i's native forest avifauna is experiencing drastic declines due to climate change-induced increases in temperature encroaching on their upper-elevation montane rainforest refugia. Higher temperatures support greater avian malaria infection rates due to greater densities of its primary vector, the southern house mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus, and enhance development of the avian malaria parasite Plasmodium relictum. Here we propose the use of the incompatible insect technique (IIT) or the combined IIT/sterile insect technique (SIT) for the landscape-scale (i.e., area-wide) c

High altitude with monotonous environment has significant impact on mood and cognitive performance of acclimatized lowlanders: Possible role of altered serum BDNF and plasma homocysteine level.

BACKGROUND: Monotony resulting due to the wilderness, sparse population and isolation from society could adversely affect human physiology and cause mood alterations. Thus, observations need to be conducted in order to elucidate the possible role of circulating biomarkers in inducing altered mood and cognitive performance following prolonged exposure to high altitude (HA) with persistent monotonous environment. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed towards investigating the impact of monotonous environment in remote HA on mood and cognitive performance of human volunteers and its correlation wit

DRIFteRS: A dataset of drift invertebrate densities in streams and rivers across western North America, 1997-2024.

Prey availability is among the most influential and highly variable determinants of fish growth and freshwater habitat carrying capacity, yet it remains understudied compared to physical habitat variables (Ouellet et al., 2025; Rosenfeld et al., 2014; Weber et al., 2017). We often lack a clear understanding of how much food is available to fishes, how it varies spatially and temporally, and how it influences responses to restoration (Ouellet et al., 2025; Rossi et al., 2024; Wipfli et al., 2010). Drift invertebrates-the primary food source for juvenile salmonids and other drift-foraging fishes

Molecular genetics of infertility: loss-of-function mutations in humans and corresponding knockout/mutated mice.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a major issue in human reproductive health, affecting an estimated 15% of couples worldwide. Infertility can result from disorders of sex development (DSD) or from reproductive endocrine disorders (REDs) with onset in infancy, early childhood or adolescence. Male infertility, accounting for roughly half of all infertility cases, generally manifests as decreased sperm count (azoospermia or oligozoospermia), attenuated sperm motility (asthenozoospermia) or a higher proportion of morphologically abnormal sperm (teratozoospermia). Female infertility can be divided into s

High Altitude Hypothermia Reversal in the Field: A Case from Northern Pakistan, Karakoram Range.

Severe accidental hypothermia is a well-recognized risk in high altitude environments, where sudden weather changes, prolonged exposure to unstable temperatures, and limited medical access can rapidly become life threatening. In remote areas such as the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan, improvised rewarming techniques may be the only viable option until evacuation is possible. We report a case of a 32-y-old healthy male trekker who was found unresponsive by his companions at ∼4200 m in the Karakoram Range with a recorded axillary temperature of 27°C, measured using a portable low-reading t

Antivenom Therapy: History, Production, and Emerging Innovations.

Snakebite envenomation remains a significant global health concern, disproportionately affecting resource-limited regions and contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality. Antivenom therapy, first pioneered in the late 19th century, continues to serve as the cornerstone of treatment, yet production methods have changed little over the past century. Modern manufacturing involves refining polyclonal antibodies-typically derived from horses, sheep, or goats-through immunization, purification, and enzymatic modification to improve efficacy and safety. Despite these advances, challenges pers

Anomalous Perceptual Experience During Ultra-Endurance Sport: A Systematic Review.

Anomalous perceptual experiences (APEs) have been reported anecdotally in ultra-endurance athletes. These experiences occur in the absence of psychiatric illness and may reflect the effects of extreme physiologic and environmental stressors. However, the literature is fragmented and terminology inconsistent, limiting understanding of the nature, prevalence, and mechanisms of these experiences. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature describing APEs during ultra-endurance sport in an attempt to characterize their phenomenology, contextual features, and contributing fac

Physiologic and Lactate Dynamics During Voluntary Breath-Hold: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This meta-analysis systematically examined the effects of voluntary breath-holding (BH) on blood lactate concentration and classified all available data according to apnea modality into static apnea (STA) and dynamic apnea (DYN) groups. Given the observed heterogeneity across studies, subgroup analyses were conducted to explore physiologic differences related to apnea type, training status, and environmental condition as well as to investigate the influence of the diving reflex on lactate metabolism. The study further aimed to quantify the degree of anaerobic activation induced by voluntary BH

Rapid Neurologic Deterioration in a Healthy Child at 4000 Meters: A Case Report and Literature Review of High Altitude Cerebral Edema in Children.

High altitude cerebral edema (HACE) is a rare but potentially fatal condition previously understudied in pediatric populations. We present a case of HACE in a previously healthy 10-y-old boy who rapidly developed neurologic symptoms at 4000 m on Mount Kilimanjaro. The child experienced headache, nausea, impaired consciousness, and ataxia before requiring assisted evacuation. Immediate descent of 2295 m resulted in complete recovery within 24 h with no long-term sequelae. A literature review of HACE in children revealed only 1 prior case series of 2 patients aged 12 and 16 y. This case report a
