Mitigating Wildfire Impact on Water Quality through Climate-Based Financing: A Case Study of the Provo River Watershed.

Following wildfires, riverine water quality in forested watersheds is prone to degradation, impacting drinking water treatment and potentially causing increased carbon emissions because of additional electricity consumption during treatment. We explore the potential for climate-based financing to support wildfire mitigation and watershed restoration by reducing potential water treatment energy demand following a fire within the Provo River watershed, Utah, USA. We model pre- and post-wildfire erosion and water quality in the Provo River using GeoWEPP. We use energy data from a water treatment

Potential impact of the 2023 Lahaina wildfire on the marine environment: Modeling the transport of ash-laden benzo[a]pyrene and pentachlorophenol.

The Lahaina urban/wildland fire event is considered the deadliest wildfire in the past century of U.S. history. This fire resulted in over 2200 building structures destroyed or damaged, approximately 4000 automobiles were incinerated and between 450 and 878 ha of grassland burned in areas adjoining the town of Lahaina, Maui County, State of Hawaii, U.S.A. One of the most abundant contaminants of both wildland and urban fires is the incomplete combustion product, benzo[a]pyrene. Pentachlorophenol from burned and unburned utility poles/residential burn sites enter into navigable waters, thus pos

Space-Based Observations of Ozone Precursors within California Wildfire Plumes and the Impacts on Ozone-NOx-VOC Chemistry.

The frequency of wildfires in the western United States has escalated in recent decades. Here we examine the impacts of wildfires on ground-level ozone (O3) precursors and the O3-NOx-VOC chemistry from the source to downwind urban areas. We use satellite retrievals of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and formaldehyde (HCHO, an indicator of VOC) from the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) to track the evolution of O3 precursors from wildfires over California from 2018 to 2020. We improved these satellite retrievals by updating the a priori profiles and explicitly accounting for the effects of s

Exposure to wildfire-related PM2.5 and site-specific cancer mortality in Brazil from 2010 to 2016: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to fine particles ≤2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) has been linked to cancer mortality. However, the effect of wildfire-related PM2.5 exposure on cancer mortality risk is unknown. This study evaluates the association between wildfire-related PM2.5 and site-specific cancer mortality in Brazil, from 2010 to 2016. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Nationwide cancer death records were collected during 2010-2016 from the Brazilian Mortality Information System. Death records were linked with municipal-level wildfire- and non-wildfire-related PM2.5 concentrations, at a resolution of 2.

Are Inflammatory Markers an Indicator of Exposure or Effect in Firefighters Fighting a Devastating Wildfire? Follow-up of a Cohort in Alberta, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: The Fort McMurray fire in Alberta, Canada, devastated the townsite in May 2016. First responders were heavily exposed to smoke particles. Blood samples taken from firefighters in May and August/September 2016 were used to measure concentrations of inflammatory markers in plasma and the relation of these markers to exposures and respiratory ill-health. METHODS: Blood samples were drawn from firefighters from two fire services, who also completed questionnaires about tasks and exposures during their deployment to the fire and about respiratory symptoms. Plasma was analysed for 42 in

Associations between classroom ventilation rates and school characteristics with indoor air in classrooms during wildfire smoke events.

In this study, we were interested in understanding what school-level factors influence infiltration of wildfire smoke into schools. This is important given that wildfire smoke is increasingly affecting western North America and has been found to affect children's respiratory health. We first determined air change rates, measured in air changes per hour (ACH), in 17 schools under four ventilation scenarios using controlled release carbon-dioxide (CO2) decay testing. We also investigated to what extent school-level characteristics and air change rates under the four ventilation scenarios influen

Assessing the Evidence for Differential Health Effects of Wildfire Smoke Across Fires and Populations: A Critical Review of Recent Studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To evaluate the recent literature on differential exposure to and health risks from wildfire smoke across subpopulations, whether wildfire-derived PM2.5 affects health differently from non-wildfire-derived PM2.5, and how wildfire smoke composition affects health. RECENT FINDINGS: We found inconsistent evidence of differential exposure to and health risks from wildfire PM2.5 by population subgroups. This could be due to variation in wildfire PM2.5 infiltration into buildings and ability to take individual protective actions, both of which have been noted to be related to soc

The "Fixed period," the wildfire news, and an unpublished manuscript: Osler's farewell speech revisited in geographical breadth and emotional depth.

William Osler, the founding Chair of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins College of Medicine, left for Oxford in 1905. He delivered a valedictory lecture February 1905 at Johns Hopkins in which he referred to a novel by Anthony Trollope called The Fixed Period. Osler stated that almost all important work was done prior to the age of 40 and the retirement age should be 60, at least for professors. In jest, he said that perhaps men should be euthanized by chloroform at age 60, which he recalled as the plot of the novel. The so-called Fixed Period address created a media controversy with numerous artic

Sustained inflammation during human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 infection: a wildfire contributing to disease progression.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus affecting 10-20 million people worldwide. While many carriers remain asymptomatic, HTLV-1 infection can trigger intense inflammatory responses which are defined by the sustained release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Central to this process is the HTLV-1 encoded Tax oncoprotein, a viral regulator that drives uncontrolled inflammation by hijacking multiple cellular signaling pathways, such as the RelA/NF-κB signal transduction pathway. CD4 T-cells are the primary targets of Tax-mediated transformation, undergoing uncontro

Effect of wildfire on the prevalence of opioid misuse through anxiety among young adults in the United States: a modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to climate change events like wildfires can lead to health and mental health problems. While conceptual frameworks have been hypothesized describing the potential relationship between disaster exposure and substance use, the association remains under-researched and unquantified. METHODS: We constructed a quantitative portrayal of one proposed conceptual framework that focuses on the intermediary role of anxiety. We used the Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the impact of wildfire exposure on opioid misuse outcomes through increased anxiety. We searched for and extracted

Wildfire-sourced fine particulate matter and preterm birth risks in Brazil: A nationwide population-based cohort study.

Wildfire-specific particulate matter with diameters ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5) is the key component of wildfire smoke, with potentially higher toxicity than PM2.5 from other sources. In this nationwide population-based cohort study, we included 22,163,195 births from Brazil during 20102019. Daily wildfire-specific PM2.5 was estimated through the chemical transport model. Time-varying Cox proportional hazards models were used to characterize the exposure-time-response (E-T-R) relationship between weekly wildfire-specific PM2.5 exposure and preterm birth (PTB) risks, followed by subgroup analyses. A 10 µg

Wildfire burn severity and stream chemistry influence aquatic invertebrate and riparian avian mercury exposure in forested ecosystems.

Terrestrial soils in forested landscapes represent some of the largest mercury (Hg) reserves globally. Wildfire can alter the storage and distribution of terrestrial-bound Hg via reemission to the atmosphere or mobilization in watersheds where it may become available for methylation and uptake into food webs. Using data associated with the 2007 Moonlight and Antelope Fires in California, we examined the long-term direct effects of wildfire burn severity on the distribution and magnitude of Hg concentrations in riparian food webs. Additionally, we quantified the cross-ecosystem transfer of Hg f

Gestational exposure to wildfire PM2.5 and its specific components and the risk of gestational hypertension and eclampsia in the southwestern United States.

In the southwestern United States, the frequency of summer wildfires has elevated ambient PM2.5 concentrations and rates of adverse birth outcomes. Notably, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) constitute a significant determinant associated with maternal mortality and adverse birth outcomes. Despite the accumulating body of evidence, scant research has delved into the correlation between chemical components of wildfire PM2.5 and the risk of HDP. Derived from data provided by the National Center for Health Statistics, singleton births from >2.68 million pregnant women were selected across

Wildfire smoke exposure and respiratory health outcomes in young adults born extremely preterm or extremely low birthweight.

OBJECTIVE: Adults born either extremely preterm (EP, <28 weeks gestation) or extremely low birthweight (ELBW, <1000 g birthweight) have more obstructive airflow than controls of normal birthweight (>2499 g). We compared self-reported adverse respiratory health outcomes in young adults born EP/ELBW with controls following smoke exposure from the 2019/2020 wildfires in the Australian state of Victoria, and explored if any effects were mediated by airway obstruction, reflected in the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1). METHODS: EP/ELBW participants were derived from all survivors born i

Wildfire impacts on freshwater detrital food webs depend on runoff load, exposure time and burnt forest type.

In the last decades, land-use changes have made Mediterranean forests highly susceptible to wildfires, which can cause several impacts not only on burnt areas, but also on adjacent aquatic ecosystems. Post-fire runoff from burnt areas may transport toxic substances to streams by surface runoff, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals, which can be noxious to aquatic organisms. Impacts on aquatic ecosystems can be related to fire severity, forest type and the exposure period; however, these factors have not been investigated in tandem. Here, we used the stream detrital syst

Prevalence Rates and Predictors of Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms in Residents of Fort McMurray Six Months After a Wildfire.

The Fort McMurray wildfire was the costliest disaster in Canadian history, with far-reaching impacts. The purpose of this paper is to examine the prevalence and risk factors of elevated generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptomatology in residents of Fort McMurray 6 months after the wildfire. Data were collected via random selection procedures from 486 participants. Generalized anxiety disorder symptoms were measured via the GAD-7. The 1-month prevalence rate for GAD symptomatology 6 months after the disaster was 19.8% overall, regression analyses revealed six variables with significant uniqu

Emerging investigator series: the effect of wildfire on streamwater mercury and organic carbon in a forested watershed in the southeastern United States.

Wildfires alter forested ecosystems, which include large stores of mercury (Hg) and organic carbon, two compounds that are closely linked in vegetation, soils, and streamwater. Studies have shown that wildfires release elevated levels of mercury to the atmosphere which can be locally redeposited and leave charred organic material (vegetation and litter) on the soil surface. Both can contribute to the elevated mobilization of Hg into lakes and streams. However, no studies have conducted a detailed examination of hydrological transport of Hg following a wildfire. This study investigates the coup

Geochemical background of oligotrophic peatlands in the northern taiga (European Northeast): Assessing the contribution of endogenous processes and wildfires to potentially toxic elements accumulation.

The present study is devoted to the vertical distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the peat profiles of the northern taiga, which depend on endogenous processes, external inputs, geochemical barriers, and are also influenced by fires. Based on the obtained results, elements were distributed within the soil profile into two distinct groups. The first group predominantly concentrates in the lower horizons and includes zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), titanium (Ti), and magnesium (Mg). The second group is primarily found i

Do cone age and heating mode determine the opening of serotinous cones during wildfires? A new bench scale approach applied to Pinus halepensis Mill.

Serotiny is a well-known fire adaptive trait in some species, as the Mediterranean conifer Pinus halepensis. However, information about cone opening mechanisms during wildfires and consequences on post fire dispersal is scarce. In addition, standardized methods allowing a realistic simulation of heating modes at bench-scale are not available. In this study, we address for the first time the interacting effects of radiation, convection and direct flame on the opening and seed release of serotinous cones, following a novel repeatable methodology. Using a Mass Loss Calorimeter (MLC) device and a
