Physiology of free will.

Free will is a perception that people have that they choose to make their movements. This perception includes a sense of willing the movement and self-agency that they are responsible for the movement. If there is a "free will force" that plays a role in movement selection, it should precede movement. There is no evidence for a driving force, and the perception of willing is not fully processed until after the movement. The perceptions of free will likely arise from an interaction between frontal and parietal areas. Free will might be considered to exist if a person's brain is functioning norm

Minors and informed consent in carrier testing: a survey of European clinical geneticists.

PURPOSE: A study was made of attitudes of clinical geneticists regarding the age at which minors should be allowed to undergo a carrier test and the reasons they provide to explain their answer. METHODS: European clinical institutions where genetic counselling is offered to patients were contacted. 177 (63%) of the 287 eligible respondents answered a questionnaire. RESULTS: Clinical geneticists were significantly more in favour of providing a carrier test to a younger person if the request was made together with the parents than if the adolescent requested the test personally. Although a lar

On willingness to be a bone marrow donor.

The authors studied factors that may influence the willingness of apheresis donors to consider bone marrow donation to an unrelated recipient. Donors were sent questionnaires describing bone marrow transplantation and the role of the donor. The information about degree of risk to the donor was varied from low to high risk. Two other factors that might influence donor motivation also were presented: probability of actually being asked to participate (high or low), and "salience of responsibility," which defines the stress to donate based on the number of persons being asked (large or small grou

Willingness to distribute free rapid home HIV test kits and to test with social or sexual network associates among men who have sex with men in the United States.

Peer-driven HIV prevention strategies can be effective in identifying high-risk persons with undiagnosed infections. Besides individual self-testing, other potential uses of rapid home HIV test kits include distributing them, and testing with others within one's social or sexual networks. We sought to identify factors associated with the willingness to engage in these alternative activities among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. From May to October 2014, we surveyed 828 HIV-negative or unknown status MSM about multiple aspects of rapid home HIV testing. A greater proportio

Willingness to Recommend Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV Prevention Among Mexican Non-Physician Health Providers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has recently been introduced in Mexico. Still, there are no data exploring the frequency and related factors of willingness to recommend it among non-physician health providers (Non-PHP). OBJECTIVE: Compare awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and willingness to recommend PrEP and combined HIV prevention among Mexican non-PHP. METHODS: We conducted an online survey assessing data on sociodemographics, awareness, knowledge, and willingness to recommend PrEP. We performed a descriptive and comparative analysis between those willing and unwilling to recom

Context, acute tolerance, and subjective response affect alcohol-impaired driving decisions.

RATIONALE: Alcohol intoxication produces effects that can impair judgment and increase engagement in risky behaviors, including alcohol-impaired driving (AID). Real-world AID decisions are informed by contextual circumstances and judgments of associated risk. How individuals vary in their AID decision-making across contexts and whether subjective alcohol responses (stimulation, sedation, acute tolerance) differentially affect AID decisions are critical, but under-studied research questions. OBJECTIVES: We systematically investigated predictors of AID decisions at different hypothetical drivin

Attitude and Needs Toward MTM Applications of Chronic Disease in China: A Questionnaire Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic diseases are characterized by high incidence, long-term medication, and complex types of medication. There are also many corresponding medication therapy management (MTM) applications on the market, such as iCarea, and Medisafe. However, the existing research mainly focuses on how to choose high-quality MTM applications, and few researchers consider the expectations of MTM applications from potential users. The aims of this study were to investigate the demand, attitude, and expectations of the Chinese patients for the MTM applications to support. METHODS: From August 2019

Smoking & autonomy: the generational tobacco endgame.

New Zealand and Malaysia have abandoned plans to introduce a generational smoking ban because of concerns that such a policy is incompatible with liberal democracy as it undermines autonomy. This paper challenges this claim by showing that smoking is not an autonomous act. Autonomy requires a deliberation of preferences, wills and inclinations. This does not occur in smokers because of three related factors: nicotine addiction, cognitive biases and psychosocial development in addiction. Nicotine addiction results in strong physical and psychological desires to seek pleasure and to avoid withdr

Indirect determination of mercury(II) by using magnetic nanoparticles, CdS quantum dots and mercury(II)-binding aptamers, and quantitation of released CdS by graphite furnace AAS.

This work describes an aptamer based method for highly sensitive determination of Hg(II). A Hg(II)-binding ssDNA aptamer was linked to silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (magNPs). Then, a conjugate composed of graphene and CdS quantum dots (Gr-CdS) was linked to the complementary ssDNA. On mixing the two components, a duplex of type magNP-dsNNA-Gr/CdS is generated. If Hg(II) is added, it wills capturing the aptamer, and this leads to the release of Gr/CdS because of the formation of a stable thymine-Hg2+-thymine link. External magnetic force is used to remove the remaining complex. The relea

Pseudoknots in prion protein mRNAs confirmed by comparative sequence analysis and pattern searching.

The human prion gene contains five copies of a 24 nt repeat that is highly conserved among species. An analysis of folding free energies of the human prion mRNA, in particular in the repeat region, suggested biased codon selection and the presence of RNA patterns. In particular, pseudoknots, similar to the one predicted by Wills in the human prion mRNA, were identified in the repeat region of all available prion mRNAs available in GenBank, but not those of birds and the red slider turtle. An alignment of these mRNAs, which share low sequence homology, shows several co-variations that maintain

Collective will: a reformulation of Otto Rank's theory of personality individuation.

A reevaluation of Otto Rank's theory of personality individuation has been proposed which equates collective and individual will as essential and mutually facilitative aspects of self-development. Rank's viewpoint regarding social and moral development as necessarily normative and, hence, inimical to individuation is therefore challenged and disputed. It is further argued that the nature of will is not a priori moral and that it should be conceptualized empirically as a derivative of the self. The negative will has been defined as the counterposition of two wills against each other. It has bee

The impact of public opinion on medical technology: the case of artificial heart implants.

A public opinion survey was conducted in the spring of 1985 in Kentucky to assess public attitudes toward artificial heart technology. The data, based on consumer and citizen perspectives, indicate that the public is interested in and aware of the technology and recent implant surgeries. More knowledgeable respondents are more likely to support Humana's involvement, but less likely to want an artificial heart and other organs to continue life, and less willing to support equitable access and increased taxes to achieve this equity. Technological optimists are more willing to have the heart and
