Smart Home Technology: A New Approach for Performance Measurements of Activities of Daily Living and Prediction of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Functional assessment is of paramount importance when mild cognitive impairment is suspected, but common assessment tools such as questionnaires lack sensitivity. An alternative and innovative approach consists in using sensor technology in smart apartments during scenario-based assessments of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). However, studies that investigate this approach are scarce and the technology used is not always transposable in healthcare settings. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether simple and wireless technology used in two different smart environments could ad

A battery-free wireless intelligent aligner for spatially resolved, closed-loop theranostics of chronic oral diseases.

Intelligent wearable theranostic systems are advancing personalized health care by enabling continuous monitoring and proactive therapy. However, managing chronic oral diseases such as caries and periodontitis is challenging due to the oral cavity's complex, spatially heterogeneous microenvironments and limited space for powered intraoral electronics. To address this, we developed a wireless, battery-free, and wearable intelligent therapeutic aligner (WiB-ITA) that integrates a butterfly-inspired dual-sided flexible integrated theranostic electrode array (iTEA) to simultaneously monitor compar

Deep learning-driven automated detection of canine cardiac murmurs via digital wireless stethoscope auscultation.

A heart murmur is a key indicator of cardiovascular disease, making auscultation essential. Nonetheless, its accuracy is influenced by the clinician’s experience and subjective interpretation. This study developed a deep learning–based algorithm (CNN6) for automated detection of heart murmurs using phonocardiogram (PCG) data acquired via a digital wireless stethoscope. A total of 2,269 recordings (over 20 h) from 406 dogs were used for model development and validation, and 297 recordings from 60 dogs were reserved for independent testing. The model achieved 89.9% sensitivity, 92.7% specificity

Ultra-flexible wireless endovascular stimulator for cortical simulation.

Objective. Endovascular neural stimulation (ENS) offers a minimally invasive alternative to conventional intra-cranial implants. However, present ENS devices rely on long transvascular leads, which are prone to foreign body responses, breakage, higher impedance, and noisy input. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of fully wireless cortical stimulation using an ultra-flexible, leadless endovascular stimulator that can be delivered with standard neurointerventional techniques.Approach. We designed an ENS implant integrating a miniaturized receiver coil, passive rectification

A Flexible Wireless Passive Platform for Decoupled Electrolyte and Temperature Sensing Toward Heat‑Stress Assessment.

Strenuous exercise and heat exposure can significantly elevate core body temperature and induce profuse sweating, leading to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and an increased risk of heat stress. Simultaneous yet decoupled monitoring of thermal and sweating-related signals is therefore essential for reliable physiological assessment under intense motion. Here, we report a flexible, wireless, and fully passive dual-mode sensing platform that enables independent detection of sweat accumulation and skin temperature on a single LC resonant architecture. The system integrates a sweat-responsive

Magnetically actuated nanoantennas for wireless glioblastoma therapy.

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains a formidable clinical challenge, characterized by invasive growth, therapeutic resistance, and dismal patient survival. We report the development of HITMAN (highly localized electric field-induced tumor therapy using magnetically actuated nanoantennas), a wireless bioelectric therapy that selectively eradicates GBM cells with cellular precision. Magnetically actuated nanoantennas convert low-frequency (≤200 kHz), deep-brain-penetrant magnetic fields into localized electric fields, thereby triggering protein unfolding, membrane disruption, and ER stress. In vitro, HIT

Miniaturized Wireless tDCS With Concentric Electrodes for Targeted Cortical Stimulation in Freely Moving Mice.

Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) emerges as a promising non-invasive technique for modulating brain activity. However, conventional systems remain limited in behavioral neuroscience due to low spatial resolution and reliance on tethered setups. Here, a miniaturized, fully wireless tDCS system is presented that employs concentric electrodes (CEs) to enable focal cortical stimulation in freely moving mice. Electric field simulations confirm that the CE design more effectively restricts current spread compared to conventional electrode configurations. The CEs, fabricated using a fle

Emergency delivery of particulate drugs by active ejection using in vivo wireless devices.

Rapidly administered emergency drug therapy represents life-saving treatment for a range of acute conditions including hypoglycaemia, anaphylaxis and cardiac arrest. Devices that automate emergency delivery, such as pumps and automated injectors, are limited by the low stability of liquid formulations. In contrast, dry particulate formulations of these drugs are stable but are incompatible with drug pumps and require reconstitution before administration. Here we develop a miniaturized (<3 cm3), lightweight (<2 g), minimally invasive, fully wireless emergency rescue device for the storage and a

Continuous Wireless Telemetric Measurement of Intraocular Pressure (IOP), Ocular Perfusion Pressure (OPP), and Cerebrospinal Fluid Pressure (CSFP) in Nonhuman Primates (NHPs).

Intraocular pressure (IOP) and cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) telemetry in large animal models can be used to determine the exact IOP, CSFP, translaminar pressure, and translaminar pressure gradient exposure that each normal and treated eye is subjected to relative to its fellow eye. In this way, it is possible to determine the independent contributions of each of these parameters (mean and/or transient fluctuations) to the risk of both the onset and rate of progression of glaucoma. Importantly, we have shown that IOP and CSFP fluctuate continuously by up to 100% over the course of the da

Phase-separated porous nanocomposite with ultralow percolation threshold for wireless bioelectronics.

Realizing the full potential of stretchable bioelectronics in wearables, biomedical implants and soft robotics necessitates conductive elastic composites that are intrinsically soft, highly conductive and strain resilient. However, existing composites usually compromise electrical durability and performance due to disrupted conductive paths under strain and rely heavily on a high content of conductive filler. Here we present an in situ phase-separation method that facilitates microscale silver nanowire assembly and creates self-organized percolation networks on pore surfaces. The resultant nan

Accuracy and Functionality of Select Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems Are Not Impacted by Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Devices.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of individuals with diabetes are adopting use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in their daily self-management. Many of these individuals have advanced heart disease. Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) devices can effectively reduce arrhythmic death and all-cause mortality in individuals with advanced heart disease. However, the potential impact of ICD devices on CGM system accuracy and functionality has not been well studied. METHODS: This evaluation assessed whether FreeStyle Libre (FL) CGM systems can coexist and function within the same patien

sEMG-based automatic characterization of swallowed materials.

Monitoring of ingestive activities is critically important for managing the health and wellness of individuals with various health conditions, including the elderly, diabetics, and individuals seeking better weight control. Monitoring swallowing events can be an ideal surrogate for developing streamlined methods for effective monitoring and quantification of eating or drinking events. Swallowing is an essential process for maintaining life. This seemingly simple process is the result of coordinated actions of several muscles and nerves in a complex fashion. In this study, we introduce automate

Efficacy of antitachycardia pacing alert by remote monitoring of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators for out-of-hospital electrical storm.

BACKGROUND: Remote monitoring (RM) has been shown to reduce all-cause mortality in patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (ICD/CRT-D). Not all devices transmit an alert for antitachycardia pacing (ATP) therapy, and it is unknown whether differences of RM alert affect the outcomes of electrical storm (ES). METHODS: We enrolled 42 patients with ICD/CRT-D whose out-of-hospital ES were detected by RM between 2013 and 2020. We divided their 54 episodes into two groups (ATP-alert-on; 22, ATP-alert-off; 32), and clinical outcomes wer

Neuromodulatory hacking: a review of the technology and security risks of spinal cord stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a neuromodulatory technique used to relieve chronic pain. Previous instances of malicious remote control of implantable medical devices, including insulin delivery pumps and implantable cardiac defibrillators, have been documented. Though no cases of neuromodulatory hacking have been recorded outside of the academic setting, an understanding of SCS technology and the possible consequences of manipulation is important in promoting safety. METHODS: We review the components and implantation protocol of a SCS system, the functionality and technological
