Anti-complement and anticoagulant activities from the salivary glands and gut of Ctenocephalides felis felis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) in wild and domestic Carnivora hosts.

Ctenocephalides felis felis is an ectoparasite of global relevance, causing impacts at the One Health interface. The process of hematophagy depends on evolutionary adaptations, in which arthropods have evolved inhibitors of host hemostatic and immunological responses, mediated by salivary and intestinal molecules. However, fleas remain among the least studied hematophagous arthropod taxa, with their salivary and intestinal antihemostatic and immunomodulatory mechanisms still largely unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the interactions of the salivary glands and intestine of C. feli

Study of genetic diversity of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto in France based on full cox1 gene.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a worldwide zoonosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) complex with E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) the main species responsible of humans CE. This study highlights the genetic diversity of E. granulosus s.s. in France to clarify the parasite's circulation in livestock, interactions with wildlife, and distinguish autochthonous from imported cases of human CE. A total of 129 full cox1 gene sequences were obtained: 101 from livestock, 12 from wildlife, and 16 from human CE patients operated in France. This study reveals a broad genetic diversity

Simulating the efficacy of wolf-dog hybridization management with individual-based modeling.

Introgressive hybridization between wolves and dogs is a conservation concern due to its potentially deleterious long-term evolutionary consequences. European legislation requires that wolf-dog hybridization be mitigated through effective management. We developed an individual-based model (IBM) to simulate the life cycle of gray wolves that incorporates aspects of wolf sociality that affect hybridization rates (e.g., the dissolution of packs after the death of one/both breeders) with the goal of informing decision-making on management of wolf-dog hybridization. We applied our model by projecti

Copy number variation of the SRY gene showed an association with disorders of sex development in Yorkshire Terrier dogs.

The molecular background of disorders of sex development (DSD) in dogs is poorly understood. Several copies of the SRY genes have been reported in the dog genome. We used droplet digital PCR with the aim of determining variability in SRY copy number and its association with DSD in dogs. Altogether 19 DSD male dogs (XY DSD) of 10 breeds and 87 control dogs of eight breeds were analyzed. Moreover, we performed a comparative analysis of SRY copy number in other canids: wolves (3), red foxes (16), and Chinese raccoon dogs (10). We found that the modal number of SRY copies in dogs, wolves, red foxe

The first report of human-derived G10 genotype of Echinococcus canadensis in China and possible sources and routes of transmission.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most important parasitic zoonoses. 10 distinct genotypes, designated G1-G10 genotypes of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.), have been split into 4 species: Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) (G1-G3), Echinococcus equinus (G4), Echinococcus ortleppi (G5) and Echinococcus canadensis (G6-G10); Echinococcus felidis has also been suggested as a sister taxon of E. granulosus s.s. recently. Four genotypes belonging to two species (G1 and G3 genotypes of E. granulosus s.s., and G6 and G7 genotypes of E. canadensis) have been identified in huma

Recognition of unfamiliar predators in domestic horses through only visual predator cues.

Acoustic, olfactory, and visual predator cues trigger various adaptive responses among a variety of prey species even when they are under human protection since birth. Previous studies have found that domesticated animals show increased vigilance, stress, flight, and aggregation behaviors in response to predation threats. These investigations, however, did not directly test visual threatening cues alone in animals that communicate more with body language than vocalizations while considering individual temperament and social status. The current study aims to address this issue. Eighteen horses

Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) in Grey Wolf (Canis lupus) in Fars Province of Iran.

Emerging and re-emerging viral diseases shared between wildlife and domestic animals are continually spreading to new geographic locations, influenced by human activities and environmental change. Canine distemper (CD) is probably one of the best examples of a disease that has been proved to be capable of compromising the conservation of several wild carnivore species. In this article, we describe a case report of CD in a grey wolf (Canis lupus) in Iran. A grey wolf was found in Fars Province close to Bamou national park. Clinical signs were characterized by neurologic signs, muscle twitching,

Did the three little pigs frighten the wolf? How deaf readers use lexical and syntactic cues to comprehend sentences.

BACKGROUND: The ways in which students with deafness process syntactic and semantic cues while reading sentences are unclear. While some studies have supported the preference for semantic cues, others have not. AIM: To examine differences in the processing of syntactic versus semantic cues during sentence reading among students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). METHOD: Twenty DHH students (mean age = 12.48 years) and 20 chronologically age-matched students with typical hearing (TH) were asked to read sentences written in Spanish with different grammatical structures and to choose the pi

The hybrid skull of the eastern coyote (Canis latrans var.): Nonmetric traits and craniomandibular shape.

The increasing awareness that hybridization, and resultant gene flow, plays a major role in animal diversification has led to a growing number of studies that have focused on assessing the morphological consequences of this process. Analyses of mammalian hybrids have identified skeletal effects of hybridization, including a suite of anomalous dental and sutural traits on the skull that are present at high frequencies in hybrid populations. These studies have also detected consistent patterns of morphological shape and size differences between hybrids and parental taxa across a wide variety of

The status of Demodex cornei: description of the species and developmental stages, and data on demodecid mites in the domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris.

Demodecosis canina is one of the most important dog parasitoses, but its aetiology is still not well known. There are currently two known species of demodecid mite specific to the domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris Linnaeus, 1758 (Carnivora: Canidae). These are Demodex canis Leydig, 1859 (Acariformes: Demodecidae) and Demodex injai Desch & Hillier, 2003. There have also been many reports of the so-called 'short form', considered to be a separate species functioning under the name Demodex cornei nomen nudum, for which, however, no formal valid description has been documented. Taxonomic analysi

Large-scale diversification of skull shape in domestic dogs: disparity and modularity.

Abstract: The variation among domestic dog breeds offers a unique opportunity to study large-scale diversification by microevolutionary mechanisms. We use geometric morphometrics to quantify the diversity of skull shape in 106 breeds of domestic dog, in three wild canid species, and across the order Carnivora. The amount of shape variation among domestic dogs far exceeds that in wild species, and it is comparable to the disparity throughout the Carnivora. The greatest shape distances between dog breeds clearly surpass the maximum divergence between species in the Carnivora. Moreover, domestic

Case Report of dirofilariasis in grey wolf in Serbia.

This paper describes a case of dirofilariasis in a two-year old, female grey wolf (Canis lupus lupus). The autopsy revealed the presence of 42 adult forms of Dirofilaria immitis in the pulmonary artery, right ventricle and right atrium, varying in length from 9.5 to 30 cm. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the second report of D. immitis in grey wolves in Serbia. Our finding confirms that the wolf, as a subspecies distinct from the dog, should also be considered as a very suitable definitive host for dirofilariasis.

Skin tumor identification by means of convolutional neural network and improved gray wolf optimizer.

INTRODUCTION: Early and accurate diagnosis of skin cancer has a huge impact on the survival rate of patients and deep learning-based CNN and dermatologists' intelligence support can fasten the diagnosis not only within the clinics but also outside. METHODS: This paper introduces a hybrid classification framework for automatic detection of melanoma that combines deep learning and better optimization. A modified GWO method called improved GWO (IGWO) has been proposed which can efficiently optimize CNN parameters and feature learning. Conventional GWO has drawbacks such as early convergence and

Evolutionary genomics of dog domestication.

We review the underlying principles and tools used in genomic studies of domestic dogs aimed at understanding the genetic changes that have occurred during domestication. We show that there are two principle modes of evolution within dogs. One primary mode that accounts for much of the remarkable diversity of dog breeds is the fixation of discrete mutations of large effect in individual lineages that are then crossed to various breed groupings. This transfer of mutations across the dog evolutionary tree leads to the appearance of high phenotypic diversity that in actuality reflects a small num

Testing a passive tracking index for monitoring the endangered Ethiopian wolf.

The endangered Ethiopian wolf is considered the rarest canid in Africa. The species faces many threats and is particularly vulnerable to diseases such as rabies. A simple, low-technology means to monitor populations would greatly facilitate conservation efforts, through early detection of population changes and behavior, and signaling a need for intervention. We tested a passive tracking index methodology, which has been a valuable tool for indexing canids and other species around the world. The method uses counts of track intrusions into plots placed in the animals' routes of travel as the ba

Successful protection of humans exposed to rabies infection. Postexposure treatment with the new human diploid cell rabies vaccine and antirabies serum.

Forty-five persons severely bitten by rabid dogs and wolves in Iran were treated after exposure with a new rabies vaccine produced in cultures of human diploid cells. All except one also received one injection of rabies immune serum. This treatment, in contrast to past experience with other vaccines, resulted in protection of all individuals against rabies. Thus, almost a century after the postexposure treatment of humans was initiated, an effective tool for protecting man against rabies has finally been developed.

[Predatory terrestrial mammals--the definitive hosts of Diphyllobothrium klebanovskii].

To clarify the definitive hosts of Diphyllobothrium klebanovskii in the Far East, 2198 individuals of 18 terrestrial predatory and omnivorous mammal species were surveyed. It was established that 47.1 +/- 8.56% of brown bears, one of the two dissected black bears, 1.7 +/- 1.2% of wolves, 1.6 +/- 0.71% of dogs, 0.3 +/- 0.14% of American minks and 2.8 +/- 2.75% of pigs were invaded by a tapeworm. Obligatory hosts of the parasite were brown and black bears, and the remaining species were optional hosts of limited significance in maintaining parasite circulation.

[Wild and domestic animals as permanent Trichinella reservoir in Poland].

BACKGROUND: [corrected] Since Owen first described Trichinella as a human patogen in 1835, the number of organisms comprising this genus has grown dramatically. This etiological agent of human trichinellosis shows worldwide distribution in domestic and/or sylvatic animals. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The aim of the presented paper was to determine the distribution of Trichinella species in wild animals such as red foxes, wolves, wild boars, and domestic pigs in Poland. Muscle samples from diaphragm and forelegs were collected from animals killed by hunters. Muscle larvae were recovered from the musc

Catch-up growth in 166 small-for- gestational age premature infants weighing less than 1,000 g at birth.

Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. are wide-spread pathogens of humans and many species of mammals. The ways of transmission are very complex and difficult to define. Both parasites occur in similar environments and share a broad host range. However, in Poland there is still little known about the epidemiology of these parasites due to the paucity of data on human cases and only few studies in wildlife. The aim of our study was to determine the distribution of two intestinal protozoa in a few species of protected and game mammals in North-Eastern Poland. Additionally, we wanted to compare p

Modeling how hunting strategies and pack size shape each other.

Social foraging exhibits unexpected features, such as the existence of a group size threshold above which hunting success is not improved, mainly because, above this threshold, additional individuals are free-riders that withhold effort. These observations have been supported by computational models of group hunting, which reveal a mechanism that causes hunting success to peak at small group sizes. In the model, hunters follow two simple rules: approach the prey until a safe distance is reached, and when closer to the prey than a critical avoidance distance, move away from other hunters. The m
