Fermi-level depinning achieved by high-work-function Au1-xSex alloy contacts for high-performance p-type WSe2 transistors.

P-type contact in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) faces more severe Fermi-level pinning (FLP) than their n-type counterparts due to the damage caused by high-work-function metal deposition. Here, we demonstrate a simple molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) contact strategy using a high-work-function (5.8 eV) Au1-xSex alloy to achieve Fermi-level depinning in monolayer WSe2 p-type transistors. The Au1-xSex alloy mitigates both defect-induced gap states (DIGS) and metal-induced gap states (MIGS) by gentle pre-deposition of selenium (Se) followed by the conversion to Au1-xSex

Does One Shot Work? The Acute Impact of a Single Taurine Dose on Exercise Performance: A Meta-Analytic Review.

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the acute effects of a single dose of taurine supplementation on exercise performance and examined potential moderators related to participant characteristics, exercise modality, dosing, and administration protocols. Six electronic databases were searched up to July 2025, identifying 23 eligible randomized trials (k = 69, N = 308). A three-level random-effects meta-analysis indicated that acute taurine ingestion may be associated with small-to-moderate improvements in overall performance (g = 0.25, 95% CI [0.10, 0.39], I2 = 61%). A manikin-based assessment of loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirator performance at variable flow rates and work rates.

Loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) are used in healthcare settings, although barriers to routine, everyday usage remain, including usability concerns and potential interference with work activities. Loose-fitting PAPRs are approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and must meet minimum performance requirements, including a minimum airflow requirement of 170 L/min. One course of action to address usability concerns is to allow for the use of PAPRs designed with reduced airflow rates. The primary objective of this study was to assess the e

Phase-synchronized iTBS and tACS at 40 Hz gamma frequency: The impact on working memory performance and functional connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Gamma oscillations are critical for cognitive functions. While phase-synchronized electric and magnetic stimulation can boost oscillatory brain activities in theta, alpha, and delta bands, the effects on gamma frequencies have not been investigated yet, especially with respect to functional connectivity and cognitive effects. This study explores how novel non-invasive techniques, phase-locked 40Hz intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) and 40Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), affect working memory performance and associated functional connectivity paramete

Contributions from Long-Term Memory Explain Superior Visual Working Memory Performance with Meaningful Objects.

Working memory (WM) capacity has been claimed to be larger for meaningful objects than for simple features, possibly because richer semantic representations enhance item distinctiveness. However, prior demonstrations compared trial-unique meaningful objects with a small set of repeated simple features. This design confounds meaningfulness with proactive interference (PI), such that PI is minimal for trial-unique objects but substantial for repeated features. Therefore, superior performance for meaningful objects may reflect contributions from episodic long-term memory (LTM) rather than expande

Relating brain function to cognitive-visuomotor integration performance in working-aged adults with persisting concussion symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: In everyday life we interact with our environment in an indirect way, where there is a mapping between the viewed goal of our action and the required movement (e.g., using a computer mouse). Such tasks require cognitive- motor integration (CMI), where rules dictate the relationship between perception and action. Previous research with primarily young adult male athletes has demonstrated that the underlying movement and cognitive control networks that rely on intact frontal, parietal, and subcortical brain region connectivity may be compromised following concussion, resulting in a

Explainable machine learning algorithm predicting working memory performance in Parkinson's disease using task-fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects both motor and cognitive functions, particularly working memory (WM). Machine learning offers an advantage for decoding complex brain activity patterns, but its application to task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (task-based fMRI) has been limited. This study aimed to develop an explainable machine learning model to classify WM performance levels in PD based on task-based fMRI data. METHODS: We enrolled 45 patients with PD and 15 healthy controls (HCs), all of whom performed an n-back WM task in an M

Visual working memory performance after the theta cycle length modulation using transcranial alternating current.

We tested whether presumed extending vs. shrinking the theta cycle in a given hemisphere by using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) could affect working memory maintenance during the change detection task. In Experiment 1, 30 young healthy adults received tACS at fixed frequency of 4 vs. 7 Hz, but no changes in change detection hit rate were observed. In Experiment 2, individual theta frequency was estimated from EEG resting state for each of 50 young healthy adults, who then received tACS either decreased or increased by 1.5 Hz relative to this individuated theta frequency.

Triangular Wave tACS Improves Working Memory Performance by Enhancing Brain Activity in the Early Stage of Encoding.

Working memory is an executive memory process that includes encoding, maintenance, and retrieval. These processes can be modulated by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) with sinusoidal waves. However, little is known about the impact of the rate of current change on working memory. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of two types of tACS with different rates of current change on working memory performance and brain activity. We applied a randomized, single-blind design and divided 81 young participants who received triangular wave tACS, sinusoidal wave tACS, or

Altered morphological characteristics and structural covariance connectivity associated with verbal working memory performance in ADHD children.

OBJECTIVES: Deficits in verbal working memory (VWM) observed in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children can persist into adulthood. Although previous studies have identified brain regions that are activated during VWM tasks, the neural mechanisms underlying the relationship between VWM deficits remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the structural covariance network connectivity and brain morphology changes that are associated with VWM performance in ADHD children. METHODS: For this study, we selected 26 ADHD children and 26 healthy control (HC) partic

Persistent neuronal firing in the medial temporal lobe supports performance and workload of visual working memory in humans.

The involvement of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) in working memory is controversially discussed. Recent findings suggest that persistent neural firing in the hippocampus during maintenance in verbal working memory is associated with workload. Here, we recorded single neuron firing in 13 epilepsy patients (7 male) while they performed a visual working memory task. The number of colored squares in the stimulus set determined the workload of the trial. Performance was almost perfect for low workload (1 and 2 squares) and dropped at high workload (4 and 6 squares), suggesting that high workload e

Substantia nigra iron affects functional connectivity networks modifying working memory performance in younger adults.

Brain iron affects working memory (WM) but the impact of iron content in deep grey matter nuclei on WM networks is unknown. We aimed to test whether deep grey matter nuclei iron concentration can affect resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) within brain networks modifying WM performance. An N-back WM paradigm was applied in a hundred healthy younger adults. The participants then underwent a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for brain network analysis and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) imaging for assessment of deep grey matter nuclei iron concentratio

A common polymorphism in the dopamine transporter gene predicts working memory performance and in vivo dopamine integrity in aging.

Dopamine (DA) integrity is suggested as a potential cause of individual differences in working memory (WM) performance among older adults. Still, the principal dopaminergic mechanisms giving rise to WM differences remain unspecified. Here, 61 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, located in or adjacent to various dopamine-related genes, were assessed for their links to WM performance in a sample of 1313 adults aged 61-80 years from the Berlin Aging Study II. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was conducted to estimate associations between polymorphisms and WM. Rs4018
