Use of community-based surveillance to enhance emerging infectious disease intelligence generation in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Community-based surveillance (CBS) refers to a structured process whereby community members systematically detect and report events of public health significance occurring within their communities. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Indonesia has taken steps to enhance national preparedness for future health threats, focussing on expanding the use of CBS. Given the novelty of CBS's use in Indonesia, we undertook this research to provide evidence-based advice to guide its implementation across the country's diverse communities and operational contexts. Designing equitable and inclusive assessments in pharmacology: Insights from education practices in medical sciences.

Inclusive assessment is essential in higher education to ensure that all students, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance, have equitable opportunities to demonstrate their learning. In high-stakes disciplines such as pharmacology and other medical sciences, where assessment outcomes significantly influence academic progression and professional qualification, embedding inclusive practices is particularly important. Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) have emerged as central principles in shaping contemporary educational approaches, especially in how we design and deliver assessm

Diversity training experiences and factors associated with implicit racial bias among recent genetic counselor graduates of accredited programs in the United States and Canada.

Implicit racial bias in healthcare settings can impact delivery of patient care. Exploration of this bias is necessary to improve patient experiences. We sought to understand implicit racial bias among graduates of accredited genetic counseling programs in the United States and Canada in the class of 2020 as they enter the genetics workforce and assess how this bias is associated with training and life experiences. Implicit racial bias was quantified through use of the Black-White Implicit Association Test (BW-IAT). Participants also completed an online survey focused on didactic and clinical

Low levels of antimicrobial resistance amongst canine staphylococci isolates from a remote First Nations community.

Little is known about the ecology and resistance profiles of staphylococci on dogs in remote First Nations communities, nor how this might differ compared to isolates from other environments, people or animals. To investigate the prevalence, species diversity and proportion of antimicrobial resistance of staphylococci isolates in a dog population from a remote First Nations community in the Northern Territory, Australia, eighty-three dogs were sampled over two sampling periods in 2021 and 2022, using a house-to-house sampling methodology. Nine species of staphylococci were identified, in addit

Women in pain medicine.

In the UK more women than men are practicing medicine, and for the first time in the history of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA), the president of the RCoA, Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, and Dean of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine are all women. However, within the subspecialty of pain medicine, there are significantly more men practicing than women, with the most recent UK estimates identifying that only 26.7% of current pain physicians are women. Both historical and modern perspectives illustrate how women often prefer to be cared for by other women, highlighting the

Creating a Pathway to Health-Care Professions for Historically Marginalized Students.

Developing a diverse talent pool starting at the high-school level, while students are making future education and career decisions, should be a national priority, given the need to build a diverse health-care workforce. This article describes a 6-week immersive simulation-based summer program to introduce 20 junior high-school students (13-15 years old) to the range of health professions. Because precollege students typically receive limited exposure to clinical settings, high-fidelity simulation is an excellent surrogate for providing realistic experiences in health care. Students heard lect

Relationship of length of transverse process of seventh cervical vertebra with positive nerve conduction studies in cases of brachialgia.

INTRODUCTION: Pathway programs aim to increase diversity in medicine by providing exposure, opportunities, and mentorship for underrepresented minority (URiM) students. While many studies focus on undergraduate-level pathway programs, few examine high school students' career trajectories. Doctors of Tomorrow (DoT) is a high school pipeline program at the University of Michigan that partners with Detroit high schools. This study evaluates the outcomes of this program and the additional needs for achieving its goal of improving diversity in the medical workforce. METHODS: A cross-sectional surv

Community health worker denominations: a global review through the case of French Guiana.

Across more than 60 countries, individuals who bridge the gap between communities and formal health systems are designated by a wide array of terms-community health workers, promotores de salud, agentes comunitários de saúde, health mediators, and many others. This proliferation of denominations is often treated as a reflection of contextual diversity. This review argues that it also reveals a deeper structural reality: the incomplete institutionalisation of a workforce that is nonetheless essential to health systems worldwide. Drawing on a comparative analysis of over 60 denominations across

"We don't get asked": including people with workforce experience as public contributors in a workforce-related study about homecare work towards the end-of-life.

BACKGROUND: Homecare workers are an undervalued but essential part of the health and care workforce in England, providing vital end-of-life care without adequate training or support. Through the SUPPORTED study we explored the experiences, training and support needs of homecare workers who care for people with advanced illness, and co-developed (with homecare workers, managers, and educators) new training resources and recommendations to improve policy and practice. MAIN BODY: This paper explores the public involvement in this study and the contribution made to the research process, research

Flemish critical care nurses' experiences regarding the influence of work-related demands on their health: a descriptive interpretive qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Critical care nurses (CCNs) around the globe face other health challenges compared to their peers in general hospital nursing. Moreover, the nursing workforce grapples with persistent staffing shortages. In light of these circumstances, developing a sustainable work environment is imperative to retain the current nursing workforce. Consequently, this study aimed to gain insight into the recalled experiences of CCNs in dealing with the physical and psychosocial influences of work-related demands on their health while examining the environments in which they operate. The second aim w

Transferable Design Principles for Scalable Mental Health Systems: A Conceptual Framework Informed by Innovations Across African Contexts.

IMPORTANCE: Mental disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide, and their burden continues to increase across Africa. Despite growing need, access to care remains limited, with treatment gaps reaching up to 90% in some settings. These gaps reflect longstanding constraints in workforce, financing, infrastructure, and sociocultural factors, alongside uneven policy implementation. At the same time, countries and communities across the continent are developing new approaches to mental health care that can complement conventional, specialist-centered models and offer transferable lessons

Strengthening Capacity in Primary Palliative Care: A Scoping Review from Latin America and the Caribbean.

INTRODUCTION: Primary palliative care (PPC) is widely recognized as essential for equitable palliative care access, yet evidence on its integration across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) remains limited. This scoping review synthesized evidence on strategies, opportunities, and challenges shaping PPC integration throughout the region. METHODS: Guided by the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews and Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, peer-reviewed and gray literature published from 2014 to February 2025 were searched across eight databases and relevant sources. Growing implementation scientists: NHLBI's K12 programs in heart, lung, blood, and sleep research.

BACKGROUND: Implementation science seeks to accelerate the adoption, integration, and scale-up of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to improve health and reduce disparities. As the field expanded, demand for trained implementation scientists rapidly outpaced workforce capacity. To address this need, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) launched the institutional Research Career Development Programs in T4 Implementation Research (K12) Next Generation of Implementation Science (iNexIS) in 2016. The program aimed to expand the national pool of rigorous implementation researcher

Estimating total and diagnosed global cancer incidence and stage distribution from 1990 to 2050: a simulation-based analysis of 17 cancers.

BACKGROUND: Cancer incidence is increasing globally, with the largest burden in low-income and middle-income countries. Workforce shortages and health system barriers contribute to substantial diagnostic delays and underdiagnosis, but estimates of undiagnosed cancer burden are lacking. The aim of this study was to estimate incidence (total and diagnosed) and stage at diagnosis in each country for 17 cancers from 1990 to 2050. METHODS: We developed the Global Cancer Workforce microsimulation model to simulate 17 cancer types (oral, nasopharynx, oesophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, anus, liver,

Best Practice and Recommendations for Pregnant Orthopedic Surgeons Part I: Navigating Residency.

Family planning and maternity leave concerns contribute to reasons why the percentage of women in orthopedic surgery is disproportionally and consistently low. Without institutional policies, these stressors are often placed on the pregnant resident in training. The establishment of formal department policies allows for clear, universal expectations, which helps decrease negative peer perception and overall dissatisfaction. This practice not only supports current trainees but can also help attract more diverse applicants to create a sustainable workforce. This is the first of a two-part paper

The cultural mosaic: a metatheory for understanding the complexity of culture.

Workforce population trends have increased the numbers and kinds of culturally diverse people who work together. Researchers in organizational behavior have often examined culture through values; however, cultural values can be based on collections of people other than traditional nation states. A cultural mosaic is presented as a framework to identify demographic, geographic, and associative features underlying culture. An individual's unique collage of multiple cultural identities yields a complex picture of the cultural influences on that person. Developments in chaos and complexity theorie

Early Adaptation of Newly Recruited Filipino Nurses in Singapore: A Qualitative Inquiry.

INTRODUCTION: Nurse migration is well-established, yet most research focuses on Asian nurses migrating to Western countries. Singapore's multicultural context, with its large international nursing workforce from the Philippines, offers an intra-Asian perspective. This study examined the early adaptation of newly recruited Filipino nurses in Singapore. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted in a medical institution. Thirteen nurses were interviewed. Data were thematically analysed. RESULTS: The nurses navigated Singapore's multicultural society to overcome the sociolinguistic challenges.

Cardiovascular Disease Training Programmes: Three Schemes to Train Leaders for Future Challenges.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents the largest burden of disease globally and despite the availability of strong evidence supporting cost-effective treatments for people with CVD, the implementation of these treatments remains low, especially in low-income settings. Shortages in workforce have led to focus on how to increase clinical capacity. However, a simplistic focus on training clinicians will not fill the gaps in research, policy and implementation, which also need to be addressed at the same time. There are multiple efforts to develop early career capacity across diverse areas at n
