Ejectosome biogenesis and assembly in the raphidophycean alga Gonyostomum semen.

The raphidophycean flagellate Gonyostomum semen (Ehrenberg) Diesing is a stramenopile protist whose ejectosomes - rod-like organelles at the cell periphery - are discharged as mucilaginous threads, which kill some zooplankton grazers. Ejectosomes are formed from fibrils, which are first distinguishable in the Golgi, where they can reach 650 nm in length, have a diameter of 21-27 nm, and possess a narrow electron-transparent lumen. Fusion of Golgi vesicles forms a post-Golgi structure containing many fibrils, which gives rise to an immature ejectosome in which some fibrils crisscross at an angl

UV-protective sunscreen compounds and their differential accumulation across ocular tissues in fish eyes from Baltic Sea.

Many fish species achieve ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection by accumulating mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) from their diet. High concentrations are often found in the eyes, but the localization of MAAs in specific fish eye tissues is unknown. In the present study we dissected the eyes of six fish species, and prepared cornea, lens, vitreous body and a mixed tissue sample consisting of retina, choroidea and sclera (RCS). Furthermore, to test if MAAs are transferred further up the food web, we investigated the occurrence of MAAs also in eyes of warm-blooded piscine predators. Most, but

Low-toxic, fluorescent labeled and size-controlled graphene oxide quantum dots@polystyrene nanospheres as reference material for quantitative determination and in vivo tracing.

Polystyrene (PS) is selected as a representative nanoplastic and persistent pollutant for its difficult degradation and wide application. The environmental risk assessment of PS is obstructed by the toxic dye-based fluorescent PS, which false positives could be induced by the leakage of dye. For high biocompatibility, low toxicity, hydrophilicity, good water dispersibility, strong fluorescent stability, graphene oxide quantum dots (o-CQDs) are selected and embedded into PS microspheres, i.e., o-CQDs@PS, by microemulsion polymerization and denoted as CPS. Meanwhile, the sizes of CPS, e.g., 100,

Osmotic stress does not trigger brevetoxin production in the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis.

With the global proliferation of toxic harmful algal bloom species, there is a need to identify the environmental and biological factors that regulate toxin production. One such species, Karenia brevis, forms nearly annual blooms that threaten coastal regions throughout the Gulf of Mexico. This dinoflagellate produces brevetoxins, which are potent neurotoxins that cause neurotoxic shellfish poisoning and respiratory illness in humans, as well as massive fish kills. A recent publication reported that a rapid decrease in salinity increased cellular toxin quotas in K. brevis and hypothesized that

Trophic niche segregation in small pelagic fishes suggests mesopelagic pearlsides as the main transmission pathway of Anisakis larvae in a Patagonian food web.

Many parasites are transmitted through trophic interactions, yet the specific pathways connecting intermediate and definitive hosts often remain poorly understood in marine food webs. In the Southwestern Atlantic, the Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) has been considered a potential vector of larval Anisakis to higher trophic levels, but low infection levels in San Matías Gulf suggest alternative transmission routes in this gulf. We investigated the role of pearlsides (Maurolicus spp.), abundant mesopelagic fishes in the gulf, in the transmission of anisakid nematodes. Examination of 229

Predator-induced defense reduces growth rate and carrying capacity in a toxic diatom, Pseudo-nitzschia seriata.

Phytoplankton employ a wide variety of defenses to reduce mortality from zooplankton grazing. Many such defenses are inducible, that is, they are upregulated in the event of increased predation. Thus, theory predicts that they should come at a cost to the organism. When exposed to predatory cues from a copepod predator, the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia seriata upregulates the production of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). DA has recently been found to have grazer deterrent effects, but whether its production comes with trade-offs is still unclear. Here, we expose a strain of P. seriata to cues from

Eye fluke infection changes diet composition in juvenile European perch (Perca fluviatilis).

Intraspecific diet specialization, usually driven by resource availability, competition and predation, is common in natural populations. However, the role of parasites on diet specialization of their hosts has rarely been studied. Eye flukes can impair vision ability of their hosts and have been associated with alterations of fish feeding behavior. Here it was assessed whether European perch (Perca fluviatilis) alter their diet composition as a consequence of infection with eye flukes. Young-of-the-year (YOY) perch from temperate Lake Müggelsee (Berlin, Germany) were sampled in two years, eye

Ratio of Methylmercury to Dissolved Organic Carbon in Water Explains Methylmercury Bioaccumulation Across a Latitudinal Gradient from North-Temperate to Arctic Lakes.

We investigated monomethylmercury (MMHg) bioaccumulation in lakes across a 30° latitudinal gradient in eastern Canada to test the hypothesis that climate-related environmental conditions affect the sensitivity of Arctic lakes to atmospheric mercury contamination. Aquatic invertebrates (chironomid larvae, zooplankton) provided indicators of MMHg bioaccumulation near the base of benthic and planktonic food chains. In step with published data showing latitudinal declines in atmospheric mercury deposition in Canada, we observed lower total mercury concentrations in water and sediment of higher lat

Assessment of mercury bioaccumulation within the pelagic food web of lakes in the western Great Lakes region.

While mercury is a health hazard to humans and wildlife, the biogeochemical processes responsible for its bioaccumulation in pelagic food webs are still being examined. Previous studies have indicated both "bottom-up" control of piscivorous fish Hg content through methylmercury.(MeHg) supply, as well as site-specific trophic factors. We evaluated ten studies from the western Great Lakes region to examine the similarity of MeHg trophic transfer efficiency within the pelagic food web, and assessed regional-scale spatial variability. Analyses of bioaccumulation and biomagnification factors betwee

Stoichiometric controls of mercury dilution by growth.

Rapid growth could significantly reduce methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in aquatic organisms by causing a greater than proportional gain in biomass relative to MeHg (somatic growth dilution). We hypothesized that rapid growth from the consumption of high-quality algae, defined by algal nutrient stoichiometry, reduces MeHg concentrations in zooplankton, a major source of MeHg for lake fish. Using a MeHg radiotracer, we measured changes in MeHg concentrations, growth and ingestion rates in juvenile Daphnia pulex fed either high (C:P = 139) or low-quality (C:P = 1317) algae (Ankistrodesmus fa

Acute Toxicity of Commercial Wildfire Retardants to Two Daphniid Species (Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia magna).

In the face of global climate change, there has been an increase in wildfires around the world, highlighting the need for improved firefighting techniques, such as the use of fire retardants (FRs). These products can enter aquatic systems directly or through runoff, posing potential risks to aquatic biota. In this study, the acute toxicity (24-h/48-h EC50) of three distinct FRs (N-Borate, N-Phosphate+, and N-Phosphate-) was assessed on the immobility of freshwater microcrustaceans Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia magna. The toxicity of the FRs varied up to two orders of magnitude, all of which p

A novel genetic engineering platform for the effective management of biological contaminants for the production of microalgae.

Microalgal cultivation that takes advantage of solar energy is one of the most cost-effective systems for the biotechnological production of biofuels, and a range of high value products, including pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and feed. However, one of the main constraints for the cultivation of microalgae is the potential contamination with biological pollutants, such as bacteria, fungi, zooplankton or other undesirable microalgae. In closed bioreactors, the control of contamination requires the sterilization of the media, containers and all materials, which increases the cost of production, w

Dangerous Relations in the Arctic Marine Food Web: Interactions between Toxin Producing Pseudo-nitzschia Diatoms and Calanus Copepodites.

Diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia produce domoic acid (DA), a toxin that is vectored in the marine food web, thus causing serious problems for marine organisms and humans. In spite of this, knowledge of interactions between grazing zooplankton and diatoms is restricted. In this study, we examined the interactions between Calanus copepodites and toxin producing Pseudo-nitzschia. The copepodites were fed with different concentrations of toxic P. seriata and a strain of P. obtusa that previously was tested to be non-toxic. The ingestion rates did not differ among the diets (P. seriata, P. obt

Interspecific competition in phytoplankton drives the availability of essential mineral and biochemical nutrients.

The underlying mechanisms and consequences of competition and diversity are central themes in ecology. A higher diversity of primary, producers often results in higher resource use efficiency in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This may result in more food for consumers on one hand, while, on the other hand, it can also result in a decreased food quality for consumers; higher biomass combined with the same availability of the limiting compound directly reduces the dietary proportion of the limiting compound. Here we tested whether and how interspecific competition in phytoplankton communiti

Re-emergence of Cholera in the Americas: Risks, Susceptibility, and Ecology.

BACKGROUND: The re-emergence of cholera in Haiti has established a new reservoir for the seventh cholera pandemic which threatens to spread to other countries in the Americas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Statistics from this new epidemic are compared to the 1991 Peru epidemic, which demonstrated the speed and complexity with which this disease can spread from country to country. Environmental factors implicated in the spread of Vibrio cholerae such as ocean currents and temperatures, as well as biotic factors from zooplankton to waterfowl pose a risk for many countries in the Americas. RESULTS: T

Evidence for the presence of cell-surface-bound and intracellular bactericidal toxins in the dinoflagellate Heterocapsa circularisquama.

Heterocapsa circularisquama, a harmful dinoflagellate, has multiple haemolytic toxins that are considered to be involved in the toxic mechanism against shellfish and certain species of zooplankton. To evaluate the further nature of the toxins of H. circularisquama, we investigated its effects on several species of bacteria. By colony formation assay, we found that H. circularisquama had antibacterial activity toward the marine bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus in a cell density-dependent manner. When the inoculated bacterial cells were co-cultured with H. circularisquama under dinoflagellate cell

Aquatic risk assessment of a realistic exposure to pesticides used in bulb crops: a microcosm study.

The fungicide fluazinam, the insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin, and the herbicides asulam and metamitron were applied to indoor freshwater microcosms (water volume approximately 0.6 m3). The treatment regime was based on a realistic application scenario in tulip cultivation. Concentrations of each pesticide were equal to 0%, 0.2%, 0.5%, 2%, and 5% spray drift emission of label-recommended rates. Contribution of compounds to the toxicity of the pesticide package was established by expressing their concentrations as fractions of toxic units. The fate of the compounds in the water, and responses of

Prey-size plastics are invading larval fish nurseries.

Life for many of the world's marine fish begins at the ocean surface. Ocean conditions dictate food availability and govern survivorship, yet little is known about the habitat preferences of larval fish during this highly vulnerable life-history stage. Here we show that surface slicks, a ubiquitous coastal ocean convergence feature, are important nurseries for larval fish from many ocean habitats at ecosystem scales. Slicks had higher densities of marine phytoplankton (1.7-fold), zooplankton (larval fish prey; 3.7-fold), and larval fish (8.1-fold) than nearby ambient waters across our study re

The contribution of seagrass carbon to coastal marine ecosystems around the island of Mauritius, Western Indian Ocean.

Understanding the role of marine vegetation in shaping coastal carbon dynamics and supporting productivity is essential for robust ecological and socio-economic assessments and effective policy development. Our study employed stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) to investigate the importance of seagrass carbon as a source of nutrition to important invertebrates spanning different trophic levels (i.e., planktonic, filter-feeding and grazing) around the island of Mauritius. Isotope mixing models confirmed high levels of assimilation of seagrass carbon across three trophic levels (dietary prop
