Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and oxygenated metabolism in atherothrombosis.

Numerous epidemiological studies and clinical trials have reported the health benefits of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), including a lower risk of coronary heart diseases. This review mainly focuses on the effects of alpha-linolenic (ALA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids on some risk factors associated with atherothrombosis, including platelet activation, plasma lipid concentrations and oxidative modification of low-density lipoproteins (LDL). Special focus is given to the effects of marine PUFA on the formation of eicosanoids and docosanoids, and to the bio

Flax lignan-fortified nanoemulsions potentiate the conversion of α-linolenic acid to n-3 LCPUFAs: cumulative metabolic patterns in non-fasting mice.

As an essential n-3 fatty acid required by the human body, α-linolenic acid (ALA) can be metabolically converted in vivo into n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), exhibiting biological functions and resource sustainability, and its conversion may be modulated by specific polyphenols. This study investigated the metabolic conversion profile in non-fasted mice following the intake of flaxseed oil nanoemulsions and assessed the potential regulatory effects of co-ingesting structurally distinct flax lignans. The re

Effect of High Temperature and Drought on the Fatty Acid Composition of Oil of Different Linseed Varieties and Its Association with Gene Expression.

Flax is an important food and industrial crop. Linolenic acid (LIN) content of linseed oil differs greatly among varieties, ranging from 2% to 70%. In addition to genetic factors, environmental conditions can also significantly impact the fatty acid composition of linseed oil. Our study aimed to compare the effects of different temperature and watering conditions on the fatty acid composition of oil from nine flax varieties with diverse LIN content induced by genotype. Elevated temperature with reduced watering resulted in increased oleic acid (OLE) levels in all varieties. Decreases in linole

Genetic and metabolic regulation of eggshell quality in aging hens: Integrated multi-omics insights into CYP7A1, CALM1, and cholic/stearic acid metabolism.

While breeding improvements have prolonged the laying cycle for greater productivity, a concurrent deterioration in eggshell quality is commonly observed in aged hens. To investigate the genetic basis of this deterioration, we conducted the multi-omics analyses on the hypothalamus, liver, duodenum, and uterus from 100-week-old Rhode Island Red hens. We identified significant genomic regions associated with total eggshell weight during 99-100 weeks (TESW99-100) and eggshell brownness at 100 week (ESB100). Transcriptomic profiling revealed distinct gene expression patterns across tissues, indica

Effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids on gastric cancer immunity and immunotherapy.

Although immunotherapy has been predominant for advanced gastric cancer treatment, it still has limitations. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are associated with inflammation while their roles in tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) are unclear. This study explores PUFAs' impacts on gastric cancer immunity and immunotherapy efficacy. Bioinformatics analysis was conducted to identify differential expressions of PUFAs metabolic genes and their immune correlations. Clinical data of advanced gastric cancer patients receiving immunotherapy at Zhongda Hospital (2020-2024), whose serum PUFAs were

Perilla Seed Oil Alleviates High-Fat-Diet-Induced Hyperlipidemia by Regulating Fatty Acid Metabolism via the PI3K/Akt/NOS3 Pathway.

Perilla seed oil (PSO), rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), has been traditionally used to relieve exterior syndrome and promote digestion, with modern studies confirming its anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-atherosclerotic properties. This study investigated the lipid-lowering effects of PSO and its underlying mechanisms in high-fat-diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats. Chemical standardization by UPLC-MS and GC-MS identified 591 compounds in PSO, with ALA accounting for 57.5% of its composition. The PSO administration significantly improved the general condition of hyperlipidemic rats, reduced body

[Nutritional aspects of attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD) has received in the past years a lot of attention from the paediatrician's specialties. Even though the studies of its etiopathology have advanced, mainly the ones related with genetics and neuroimaging, the final cause today is still unclear. DEVELOPMENT: It has been related to many factors such as diet, like some allergies to additives, toxicity to heavy metals and other toxic substances from the environment, due to low protein diets with a high carbohydrate content, unbalanced minerals, essential fatty acids and phospholipid defic

Formation and reduction of furan in pumpkin puree by precursors, antioxidants, sterilization and reheating.

The formation and mitigation of furan in pumpkin puree (PP) were studied during the complete process of producing PP. The content of furan was determined using headspace solid-phase microextraction combined by GC-MS analysis. Various PP samples added with precursors (glucose, fructose, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, β-carotene, ascorbic acid, glutamic acid, alanine, and serine) showed increased furan formation (30.81 ∼ 94.45 µg/kg) compared with the control (30.81 µg/kg), with β-carotene resulting in the formation of the largest amount of furan. The effects of antioxidants, such as caffeic aci

Early postnatal oleic acid administration enhances synaptic development and cognitive abilities in the Ts65Dn mouse model of Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: The brains of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) present defects in neurogenesis and synaptogenesis during prenatal and early postnatal stages that are partially responsible for their cognitive disabilities. Because oleic and linolenic fatty acids enhance neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, and cognitive abilities in rodents and humans, in this study we evaluated the ability of these compounds to restore these altered phenotypes in the Ts65Dn (TS) mouse model of DS during early postnatal stages. METHODS: TS and euploid mice were treated with oleic or linolenic acid from PD3 to PD15, an

α-linolenic acid-induced facilitation of GABAergic synaptic transmission is mediated via acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC1a) activity in the basolateral amygdala.

ABSTRACT: To enhance the reliability and stability of information acquisition, biological perception systems have gradually evolved from unimodal processing to multimodal integration mechanisms. Audio-visual cross-modal integration, in particular, has demonstrated robustness and generalization capabilities in key cognitive tasks such as speech recognition, emotion processing, and spatial localization. Moreover, increasing physiological evidence points to the existence of direct connections between primary perceptual layers during audiovisual information processing. However, how these connectio

Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Reduced Risk of Low Muscle Mass in Adults.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the effects of both joint and individual types of fatty acids on low muscle mass in adults. Methods: We enrolled 8842 adults selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariate adjusted weighted logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the connection between fatty acids and low muscle mass. We used restricted cubic splines (RCSs) to determine whether the relationship is linear or non-linear, while stratified analyses and interaction effects were also assessed. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) analysis assessed the im

The formation, characteristic, and stability of oat protein-hyaluronic acid complexes on perilla oil emulsion and its application in plant-based mayonnaise.

This study explored the formation mechanism of the oat protein and hyaluronic acid complex, applying it to a stable in-phase highly emulsified system (HIPE) for protecting perilla oil and as a fat substitute in low-fat mayonnaise. Results showed that hyaluronic acid (0.25-2.0 wt%) increased electrostatic repulsion and induced structural changes in oat protein, including the elevated β-sheet content, reduced surface hydrophobicity, and quenched intrinsic fluorescence. Molecular docking confirmed hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions between oat protein and hyaluronic acid. At 1.5 % hyal

Bio-Guided Fractionation and Molecular Networking Reveal Fatty Acids to Be Principal Anti-Parasitic Compounds in Nordic Seaweeds.

Widespread use of antimicrobial drugs has led to high levels of drug-resistance in pathogen populations and a need for novel sources of anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic compounds. Macroalgae (seaweed) are potentially a rich source of bioactive compounds, and several species have traditionally been used as vermifuges. Here, we investigated the anti-parasitic properties of four common cold-water Nordic seaweeds; Palmaria palmata (Rhodophyta), Laminaria digitata, Saccharina latissima and Ascophyllum nodosum (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae). Screening of organic extracts against helminths of swine (Asc

Perinatal n-3 fatty acid deficiency selectively reduces myo-inositol levels in the adult rat PFC: an in vivo (1)H-MRS study.

To investigate the effects of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency on phosphatidylinositol signaling in brain, myo-inositol (mI) concentrations were determined in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of omega-3 fatty acid deficient rats by in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS). To generate graded deficits in PFC docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) (DHA) composition, perinatal and postweaning alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) (ALA) deficiency models were used. Adult male rats were scanned in a 7T Bruker Biospec system and a (1)H-MRS spectrum acquired from the bilateral medial PFC. Rats were then ch

Omega-3 fatty acids and chemotherapy-induced toxicities: mechanisms and emerging evidence with a pediatric focus.

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that are essential for proper cell structure and function. The primary types of omega-3 fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is an essential fatty acid, meaning that humans and other mammals cannot produce it on their own and must obtain it from dietary sources. Research has firmly established the positive effects of omega-3 fatty acids in adults, showing benefits for cardiovascular health, brain function, mental health, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and skin health. Palmitic acid, but not other long-chain saturated fatty acids, increases S100B protein and TNF-α secretion by astrocytes.

Obesity is a health problem that involves fat accumulation in adipose and other tissues and causes cell dysfunction. Long-chain saturated fatty acids can induce and propagate inflammation, which may also contribute to the brain alterations found in individuals with obesity. Fatty acids accumulate in astrocytes in situations of blood‒brain barrier disruption, such as inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, the increase in tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) secretion is considered an essential component of the inflammatory response. We hypothesize that t
