Ultrasound-guided Shoulder Intraarticular Ozone Injection Versus Pulsed Radiofrequency Application for Shoulder Adhesive Capsulitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: A diseased shoulder due to pain, stiffness, or weakness negatively affects patients' quality of life and their ability to carry out activities of daily living. Adhesive capsulitis is a disease characterized by shoulder pain and global limitation of movement in the shoulder joint. Many interventions have been proposed for the treatment of primary adhesive capsulitis. The current study compares the effect of ultrasound-guided intraarticular injection of ozone versus steroid versus intraarticular application of pulsed radiofrequency. OBJECTIVES: The primary outcome of the current stu

Achilles tendon injuries in athletes.

Two-thirds of Achilles tendon injuries in competitive athletes are paratenonitis and one-fifth are insertional complaints (bursitis and insertion tendinitis). The remaining afflictions consist of pain syndromes of the myotendineal junction and tendinopathies. The majority of Achilles tendon injuries from sport occur in males, mainly because of their higher rates of participation in sport, but also with tendinopathies a gender difference is probably indicated. Athletes in running sports have a high incidence of Achilles tendon overuse injuries. About 75% of total and the majority of partial ten

Comparison of the Wrightington FC hip with the Charnley low-friction arthroplasty. 10- to 15-year results and survival analysis.

Between 1981 and 1986 two groups of patients received either Charnley low-friction arthroplasties or the Wrightington Frusto-Conical hip replacement with otherwise identical management before and after operation. There were 260 consecutive replacements in 215 patients in the first group and 260 consecutive procedures in 211 patients in the second. Both components of each design were cemented and featured a 22.25 mm femoral head, but the geometry of the stems differed. Of the patients lost to follow-up, 16 (18 hips) were in the Wrightington series and 24 (36 hips) in the Charnley series, and of

Validity and Responsiveness of the Single Alpha-numeric Evaluation for Shoulder Patients.

BACKGROUND: There is an ever-increasing demand for widespread implementation of patient-reported outcomes. However, adoption is slow owing to limitations in clinical infrastructure and resources within busy orthopaedic practices. Prior studies showed the single alpha-numeric evaluation (SANE) score to correlate at a single point in time with the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score. However, no study has validated the SANE in terms of test-retest reliability, responsiveness, or clinical utility. PURPOSE: To validate SANE with the ASES across a sample of patients with common ortho

The optimum tension for bridging sutures in transosseous-equivalent rotator cuff repair: a cadaveric biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Transosseous-equivalent (TOE) rotator cuff repair can increase contact area and contact pressure between the repaired cuff tendon and bony footprint and can show higher ultimate loads to failure and smaller gap formation compared with other repair techniques. However, it has been suggested that medial rotator cuff failure after TOE repair may result from increased bridging suture tension. PURPOSE: To determine optimum bridging suture tension in TOE repair by evaluating footprint contact and construct failure characteristics at different tensions. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laborato

Elbow problems in the athlete.

Athletes expose their elbows to significantly high forces, in addition to multiple repetitive motions. Athletic injuries about the elbow include ligamentous, tendon, articular, and nerve injuries. The proper diagnosis requires a thorough knowledge of the anatomy, pathomechanics, and physical findings associated with these injuries. Treatment entails a methodical progression from nonoperative to operative intervention.

Sports medicine for the internist.

Because of increasing participation in leisure sports and exercise rehabilitation programs, many patients are developing nonsurgical, soft tissue overuse syndromes. Many of these musculoskeletal problems arise because of underlying biomechanical difficulties, training errors, or improper use of equipment. Epidemiologic observations reveal that these individuals frequently visit a general medical practitioner before seeking the advice of an orthopedic specialist. Prompt diagnosis simply requires an appreciation of anatomy and an analytic understanding of sports biomechanics. Although compulsive
