BACKGROUND: Hypertension causes cardiac morbidity and premature mortality. Accurate evaluation to exclude potentially curable causes is important. Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (CMR/CE-MRA) provide an integrated approach to the assessment of hypertensive patients - a single study can identify certain secondary causes and assess left ventricular (LV) mass and function. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the feasibility of CMR/CE-MRA to define LV dimensions and exclude some secondary causes in a selected group of hypertensives.

The aim of this study was to determine the potential of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) angiography in the evaluation of peripheral bypass grafts. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) served as a standard of reference. Thirty-five patients with previous bypass graft surgery underwent DSA and contrast-enhanced MR angiography within 2 weeks. MR angiography was performed using a three-dimensional fast gradient-echo sequence after administration of gadopentetate dimeglumine. Every leg was divided into 11 segments and scored in five categories of stenosis. MR angiography findings were co

Background Left ventricular (LV) involvement is common in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). We aim to evaluate LV involvement in ARVC patients by cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature tracking. Methods and Results Sixty-eight patients with ARVC and 30 controls were prospectively enrolled. ARVC patients were divided into 2 subgroups: the preserved LV ejection fraction (LVEF) group (LVEF ≥55%, n=27) and the reduced LVEF group (LVEF <55%, n=41). Cardiovascular magnetic resonance with late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature tracking

This study aimed to assess coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) differences in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) first-pass perfusion and late gadolinium enhancement imaging. Forty-seven patients with HCM and twenty-one healthy volunteers underwent CMR at rest. Imaging protocols included short axis cine, first-pass myocardial perfusion, and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). Left ventricular end-diastolic wall thickness (EDTH), LGE, time to peak (Tpeak), maximal up-slope (Slopemax), and peak signal intensity (SIpeak) were assessed for each my

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging (VWI) techniques have been developed to assess atherosclerotic plaques in intracranial arteries, which are a cardinal cause of ischemic stroke. However, the clinical roles of plaque-related vulnerability and inflammation remain unclear. Hence, we evaluated plaque characteristics using VWI of the proximal middle cerebral artery (M1) in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
METHODS: We prospectively examined 30 consecutive patients with acute noncardioembolic stroke in the M1 territory using pre-/postcontrast T1-weighted (T1W) three-dimensional

In rheumatologic diseases magnet resonance imaging (MRI) is capable of depicting early inflammatory changes which are frequently missed by other imaging modalities. New MRI protocols and hardware, primarily whole-body MRI and low-field extremity MRI facilitate the use of MRI in rheumatology patients. The increasing number of functional MRI techniques provide additional molecular information on the tissue composition, e.g. cartilage quality. These molecular MRI techniques enable new ways for early disease detection and therapy monitoring. Hybrid imaging modalities, such as MRI-SPECT (single pho

BACKGROUND: Although echocardiography is used as a first line imaging modality, its accuracy to detect acute and chronic myocardial infarction (MI) in relation to infarct characteristics as assessed with late gadolinium enhancement cardiovascular magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) is not well described.
METHODS: One-hundred-forty-one echocardiograms performed in 88 first acute ST-elevation MI (STEMI) patients, 2 (IQR1-4) days (n = 61) and 102 (IQR92-112) days post-MI (n = 80), were pooled with echocardiograms of 36 healthy controls. 61 acute and 80 chronic echocardiograms were available for analysi

OBJECTIVES Risk assessment of patients with aortic stenosis (AS) undergoing aortic valve replacement (AVR) is challenging. We set out to determine the impact of myocardial late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), as detected by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), on postoperative outcomes following AVR. METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted on patients undergoing CMR using the LGE technique within 1 year of subsequent AVR. Patients were categorized into absent, mid-wall or infarct patterns of LGE by independent observers blinded to all clinical data, and data were collected wi

In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the MRI features of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in 72 patients who underwent MRI before and after gadolinium injection. Recurrent NPC exhibited a high degree of regional spread and a variety of signal intensities and contours. MRI showed a nasopharyngeal mass in 50 patients (69.4 %); other sites of involvement included the parapharyngeal space (44.4 %), nasal cavity (12.5 %), paranasal sinuses (27.8 %), oropharynx (4.2 %), orbit (8.3 %), infratemporal fossa (18.1 %), skull base (59.8 %), intracranial area (51.4 %) and regional lymph nodes

BACKGROUND: Different patterns of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) including mid-wall fibrosis using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) have been reported in adult patients presenting with non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). In these studies, LGE was associated with pronounced LV remodelling and predicted adverse cardiac outcomes. Accordingly, the purpose of our study was to determine the presence and patterns of LGE in children and adolescents with DCM.
METHODS: Patients <18 years of age presenting with severe congestive heart failure who were admitted for evaluation of heart tr

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the hypothesis that cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) myocardial perfusion imaging can provide incremental prognostic value over other risk factors regarding the prediction of major cardiovascular events in a large, consecutive, and thereby unselected population of patients presenting with stable angina pectoris.
BACKGROUND: Recently, it has been shown that CMR provides good short-term prognosis in patients with stable coronary heart disease. Reversible myocardial ischemia can be assessed using a combination of perfusion and late gadolinium enhan

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) very early after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) may lead to instability or early stent complications. However, CMR in the hyperacute phase of STEMI may improve risk stratification. We investigated feasibility and safety of CMR in the hyperacute phase of STEMI immediately after PPCI. One hundred and twenty eight consecutive patients immediately after PPCI for STEMI. Sixty four underwent CMR <12 h after PPCI versus 64 matched controls. Outcomes were followed over 6 months. CMR in hyperacute STEMI was not associated with in-hospital death

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Thrombin-induced clots used in experimental thromboembolic stroke differ from clots forming spontaneously under clinical conditions. We investigated whether this difference influences the efficacy and outcome of thrombolytic treatment.
METHODS: In rats, the middle cerebral artery was occluded by intracarotid injection of fibrin-rich clots, prepared either according to established methods by adding thrombin to freshly drawn arterial blood or by spontaneous coagulation. The mechanical properties of clots were determined in vitro by elasticity and plasticity tests. One ho
