Orthognathic surgery-related condylar resorption in patients with skeletal class III malocclusion versus class III malocclusion: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic-orthognathic treatment is the standard of care for moderate and/or severe skeletal class III (SCIII) malocclusion. Following orthognathic surgery, morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint structures (TMJ) may contribute to condylar resorption (CR). OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to identify the morphological signs of condylar resorption (changes in the condylar head, position, neck, disk, and joint space) following orthognathic surgery in patients with SCIII compared with those with skeletal class II (SCII) malocclusion. Furthermore, surgical tech

Disease burden and economic losses associated with Taenia solium cysticercosis in pigs and humans in Nigeria.

Taenia solium is a zoonotic parasite endemic in many low-income countries, including Nigeria, contributing to both human and animal health burdens. This study quantifies the disease burden and economic costs of T. solium cysticercosis in Nigeria through a meta-analysis and economic modelling approach. Data synthesis was performed using both fixed and random-effects meta-analysis, with reporting structured according to PRISMA guidelines. Additionally, economic models were applied to estimate financial losses, years of life lost (YLL), years lived with disability (YLD), and disability-adjusted l

Facial nerve transfer for facial reanimation with parotidoplasty approach.

BACKGROUND: Facial paralysis has a profound impact on quality of life in affected individuals, primarily through loss of verbal and nonverbal communication. Common facial nerve reanimation techniques include coaptation to the masseteric or hypoglossal nerve. Most techniques require nerve grafts to achieve a tension-free neurorrhaphy. Our report aims to show a surgical adaption to current facial reanimation procedures using a partial parotidoplasty approach in order to avoid challenges caused by interpositional nerve grafts through primary neurorrhaphy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The modified surgi

The influence of educational measures and low-level laser phototherapy on temporomandibular disorders: Study protocol clinical trial (SPIRIT Compliant).

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) with low-power laser is used for pain relief in several clinical conditions, including temporomandibular disorders (TMD). As musculoskeletal pain often produces changes in motor behavior, it is common for patients with TMD to present limited mandibular movements. To the date, there is no consensus about the optimal dosimetric parameters of PMBT for TMD. This randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial aims to evaluate pain relief and mandibular mobility in patients with TMD following treatments with 2 laser wavelengths, red (660 nm) and infrared (808 n

Spontaneous behavioral responses in the orofacial region: a model of trigeminal pain in mouse.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a translational mouse model for the study and measurement of non-evoked pain in the orofacial region by establishing markers of nociceptive-specific grooming behaviors in the mouse. BACKGROUND: Some of the most prevalent and debilitating conditions involve pain in the trigeminal distribution. Although there are current therapies for these pain conditions, for many patients, they are far from optimal. Understanding the pathophysiology of pain disorders arising from structures innervated by the trigeminal nerve is still limited, and most animal behavioral models focus on

Influence of different processing procedures on the reproductive capacity of Trichinella spiralis in pork meat.

The aim of this work was to determine the influence of different processing procedures and preparations on the viability and infectivity of Trichinella spiralis ML. The muscles of limbs tongue and masseters of pigs experimentally infected were collected, splitted to pieces, and pooled. Five batches were used for the following processing procedures: (1) seasoning with "adobo", commercially acquired chilli and several other spices, (2) "wet-curing" by immersion of meat pieces in 3% brine during 24 hours, (3) cold storage without any further processing or preparation, (4) freezing to -20 degrees

Dry needling, lidocaine, and mepivacaine for myofascial pain and associated temporomandibular disorder and depressive symptoms: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pain of the masticatory muscles significantly contributes to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and is often associated with impaired function and depressive symptoms. While trigger point injections like dry needling and local anesthetics are common, direct comparisons in the orofacial region are limited. This randomized trial compared the effectiveness of dry needling, lidocaine, and mepivacaine regarding myofascial pain, self-reported TMD symptoms, and depressive symptoms. METHODS: In this double-blind trial, 75 patients with bilateral active masseter and temporalis tr

Functional Analysis of Rhythmic Jaw Movements Evoked by Electrical Stimulation of the Cortical Masticatory Area During Low Occlusal Loading in Growing Rats.

The maturation of rhythmic jaw movements (RJMs) and related neuromuscular control has rarely been studied in animals, though this process is essential for regulating the development of stomatognathic functions. Previous studies have shown that occlusal hypofunction during growth alters masticatory performance. However, little is known about patterns of cortically-induced RJMs under conditions of soft-diet feeding during development. The aim of this study is to clarify the effect of low occlusal loading on the pattern of cortically induced RJMs and related neuromuscular responses in growing rat

Mandibular angle ostectomy for Chinese women: approaches and extent determined by cephalometric analysis.

Giving a square and muscular appearance, a prominent mandibular angle is considered to be unattractive in the Orient. Because of the different aesthetic sensitivities, the problem is reported more frequently in the Orient than that in the West. In most reports, the final choice of surgical procedure, including the approach, position of ostectomy, and volume of bone to be cut, depended subjectively on the experience of the surgeon and the desire of the patient. This article provides a study to make the surgical procedure accurately and objectively, involving 46 female patients asking for reduct

Temporomandibular joint disk displacement without reduction. Treatment with flat occlusal splint versus no treatment.

A flat occlusal splint has been extensively used in the treatment of patients with temporomandibular joint disk displacement without reduction, but no studies with untreated controls have assessed its effect. We randomly assigned 51 patients with temporomandibular joint pain and arthrographically verified disk displacement without reduction to be treated with a flat occlusal splint or to serve as untreated control subjects in a 12-month clinical trial. Pain symptoms disappeared in about one third of the patients in each group. Another third of the patients in the control group improved. Sixtee

Open reduction of subcondylar fractures via an anterior parotid approach.

Visualization of subcondylar fractures is limited, and rigid fixation technically difficult, employing standard open surgical techniques--especially when the condyle is displaced out of the glenoid fossa. The majority of condylar neck fractures are treated by closed reduction with maxillomandibular fixation, to obviate the potential for permanent injury to the facial nerve. The technique described employs an anterior parotid, two-layer, sub-SMAS (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system) approach via a rhytidectomy incision that reliably identifies and preserves the neural elements and provides
