Re-interpretation of the mechanism of type 2 diabetes mellitus based on a framework of psychosomatic medicine: a real-world study.

OBJECTIVE: Using bipolar disorder (BD) as a control, we explored the possible developmental process of impaired glucose metabolism rhythm. METHODS: In total, 441 subjects (77, 162, 134, 54, and 14 in the pre-diabetes [pre-DM], DM, BD, BD + pre-DM, and BD + DM groups, respectively) and 160 controls were included. All subjects were assessed using the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes were measured. RESULTS: Cluster analysis showed that the BD, BD + DM, and DM groups were clas

Abnormal Functional Connectivity Between the Left Medial Superior Frontal Gyrus and Amygdala Underlying Abnormal Emotion and Premature Ejaculation: A Resting State fMRI Study.

INTRODUCTION: Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common sexual dysfunction and is found to be associated with abnormal emotion. The amygdala plays an important role in the processing of emotion. The process of ejaculation is found to be mediated by the frontal-limbic neural circuits. However, the correlations between PE and emotion are still unclear. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data were acquired in 27 PE patients with stable emotion (SPE), 27 PE patients with abnormal emotion (NPE), and 30 healthy controls (HC). We used rs-fMRI to explore the underlyin

Why could meditation practice help promote mental health and well-being in aging?

Psycho-affective states or traits such as stress, depression, anxiety and neuroticism are known to affect sleep, cognition and mental health and well-being in aging populations and to be associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mental training for stress reduction and emotional and attentional regulation through meditation practice might help reduce these adverse factors. So far, studies on the impact of meditation practice on brain and cognition in aging are scarce and have limitations but the findings are encouraging, showing a positive effect of meditation training on co

Effects of the Mu opioid receptor polymorphism (OPRM1 A118G) on pain regulation, placebo effects and associated personality trait measures.

Mu-opioid receptors (MOPRs) are critically involved in the modulation of pain and analgesia, and represent a candidate mechanism for the development of biomarkers of pain conditions and their responses to treatment. To further understand the human implications of genetic variation within the opioid system in pain and opioid-mediated placebo responses, we investigated the association between the functional single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the μ-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1), A118G, and psychophysical responses, personality traits, and neurotransmitter systems (dopamine (DA), opioid) relat

Crying without a cause and being easily upset in two-year-olds: heritability and predictive power of behavioral problems.

In order to estimate the influence of genetic and environmental factors on 'crying without a cause' and 'being easily upset' in 2-year-old children, a large twin study was carried out. Prospective data were available for ~18,000 2-year-old twin pairs from the Netherlands Twin Register. A bivariate genetic analysis was performed using structural equation modeling in the Mx software package. The influence of maternal personality characteristics and demographic and lifestyle factors was tested to identify specific risk factors that may underlie the shared environment of twins. Furthermore, it was

Nightmares associated with the eveningness chronotype.

Relations between common nightmares and chronobiological factors remain poorly understood. The possibility that nightmare frequency and distress are associated with chronotype ("morningness-eveningness") was investigated in a sample of respondents to an Internet questionnaire. Over a 4(1/2)-year period, a total of 3978 subjects (mean age = 26.5 +/- 11.6 yrs; age range = 10-69; 2933 female, 1045 male) submitted responses to single items about chronotype and nightmares as well as to other demographic variables. Analyses of chronotype and nightmares items by age and gender replicated most previou

Relationship between psychosocial factors and onset of multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of psychosocial variables on patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the relationship between these variables and the onset of MS. BACKGROUND: The current evidence indicates that many types of psychosocial factors are involved in the development and relapse of MS, and it has been suggested that they could serve as predictors as well. So far, little has been reported on the effect of psychosocial factors on MS and the relationship between psychosocial factors and the onset of MS. METHODS: Forty-one patients, 15 males and 26 f

Partners in adversity. V: Support, personality and coping behaviour at the time of crisis.

This paper presents further results from a study of married women in Edinburgh who had just suffered an adverse experience: either their husband's non-fatal myocardial infarction, their husband's death or their own arrival in a Women's Aid refuge for battered women. Interviews were carried out 4-6 weeks following the adverse experience and, where possible, again approximately 3 months later. Symptoms were assessed using the 30-item General Health Questionnaire and criterion-based measures of depression and anxiety derived from it. The extent and nature of crisis support from household members

Maternal smoking and alcohol use in association with breastfeeding initiation, duration, and infant health - a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive alcohol consumption is associated with reduced milk production, altered milk composition, and increased risk of adverse outcomes such as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), highlighting the importance of managing alcohol intake during breastfeeding. Additionally, maternal smoking is associated with challenges in breastfeeding initiation and an elevated risk of infant respiratory issues, with a significant proportion of women resuming smoking postpartum. The review examined the association between maternal alcohol consumption and smoking during pregnancy and postpartum

Polygenic risk for mental disorders as predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder after mild traumatic brain injury.

Many patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are at risk for mental health problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The objective of this study was to determine whether the polygenic risk for PTSD (or for related mental health disorders or traits including major depressive disorder [MDD] and neuroticism [NEU]) was associated with an increased likelihood of PTSD in the aftermath of mTBI. We used data from individuals of European ancestry with mTBI enrolled in TRACK-TBI (n = 714), a prospective longitudinal study of level 1 trauma center patients. One hundred and sixteen m

Psychological aspects of obesity.

Obesity is a metabolic disorder conditioned by several factors with the individual genetic proneness to accumulation of body fat with a positive energetic balance. If such definition describes the essential nature of obesity aptly, the treatment thereof ought to be the realm of somatic medicine and somatically oriented physicians, which is, unfortunately, frequently the case. Yet, not only being a disorder concerning improper body composition, but also a difference in cognitive processes and emotions of the obese, obesity needs to be considered in a more complex manner. The life of the obese c

Rethinking treatment motivation in addiction care: executive functions and personality over clinical severity- a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and substance use disorders are chronic mental disorders characterised by high relapse rates, and treatment motivation is one of the most important determinants of success in the treatment process. However, in clinical practice, significant differences in treatment motivation are observed among individuals with similar levels of addiction severity. This suggests that motivation may be closely related not only to clinical severity indicators but also to cognitive and personality-related processes. AIM: The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between treatment

A newly developed circadian imbalance index (CII) and risk of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic disease in the UK biobank.

UNLABELLED: To examine the association between combined circadian imbalance related traits and cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) disease risk, and their potential interaction with night shift work. This study included 191,764 UK Biobank participants without major chronic diseases who were employed at baseline (2006–2010). The Circadian Imbalance Index (CII) was developed by combining several factors indicative of a propensity for circadian misalignment. One point was assigned for each of the following components if present: evening chronotype, sleep duration ≤ 6 or ≥ 9 h/day, high neurotic
