A scoping review of educational practices in caesarean section training.

BACKGROUND: Caesarean Section (CS) is the most frequently performed abdominal surgery. Procedure-related mortality following CS is up to 100 times higher in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) compared to High-Income Countries (HICs) when comparing outcomes between countries classified by the World Bank's income classification. In LMICs, CS are often conducted by junior doctors with limited supervision, highlighting the need for effective training strategies. This scoping review aimed to systematically identify, describe and map existing educational strategies for training novice surgeons

Predictors of adverse neonatal outcomes in low-risk nulliparous women at term with meconium-stained amniotic fluid.

OBJECTIVES: Meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) has been linked to adverse neonatal outcomes, but most evidence comes from heterogeneous cohorts that included multiparous and high-risk women. Nulliparous women without comorbidities are generally considered low risk, yet their outcomes in the presence of MSAF remain less well defined. This study aimed to identify predictors of adverse neonatal outcomes in low-risk nulliparous women at term with MSAF. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. PATIENTS: Seven hundred sixty low-risk nulliparous women with documented MSAF at term delivery between

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian cancer (OC) remains a major global health burden. India reports the second-highest number of cases worldwide, with a steadily rising age-standardized incidence rate. Delayed diagnosis, often at advanced stages, is driven by socioeconomic disparities, limited awareness, and nonspecific early symptoms. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological profile, clinical characteristics, and management patterns of OC in Eastern India. METHODS: This retrospective, hospital-based epidemiological study was conducted at Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur, India, between January 2019

Association between antenatal care utilization, preeclampsia, and neonatal Apgar scores among postnatal women in Eswatini: an analytical cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder that occurs during pregnancy significantly associated with maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is associated with complications for both mothers and babies although 10 - 20% may be prevented through proper antenatal care (ANC) utilization. In Eswatini, despite high ANC coverage, there has been an increase in maternal and neonatal deaths with limited evidence of the associated factors. Therefore, this study examined the utilization of ANC services, prevalence, and factors associated with pre-eclampsia and low Apgar Score among Postn

Feasibility of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn Case Ascertainment and Assessing Its Impact on Prenatal and Postnatal Outcomes: Protocol for Observational Studies.

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is a rare but serious condition caused by maternal-fetal red blood cell antigen incompatibility. In an affected pregnancy, maternal immunoglobulin G antibodies cross the placenta and target fetal or neonatal red blood cells, leading to hemolysis, hyperbilirubinemia, and anemia. Although routine screening and alloimmunization prevention programs have contributed to the decline in HDFN in the United States, further understanding of its epidemiology is still needed. OBJECTIVE: This protocol aims to provide an overview of the study des

Assessment of the prognostic value of CA125 for miscarriage risk in patients with threatened abortion: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Threatened abortion is a common obstetric complication where early risk stratification is crucial for clinical management. CA125, a glycoprotein biomarker produced by endometrial and trophoblastic tissues, may serve as a valuable prognostic indicator as its elevated levels often reflect placental inflammation or detachment in this condition. To systematically assess its clinical value, we conducted a meta-analysis evaluating the prognostic accuracy of serum CA125 levels for miscarriage risk in patients with threatened abortion. METHODS: We systematically searched Web of Science, M

Exploring Risk Factors and Perinatal Outcomes of Preterm Birth in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Comprehensive Analysis.

Background Preterm birth before 37 weeks of gestation is a global public health challenge, particularly in India, where the prevalence varies regionally. Understanding risk factors, such as maternal age and complications like hypertensive disorders, is vital. India's diverse healthcare landscape and regional disparities further complicate this issue. Preterm infants face increased mortality and morbidity risks like respiratory distress and intraventricular hemorrhage. This study in a tertiary care hospital aimed to analyze risk factors, assess perinatal outcomes, and contribute to the understa

How Surgical Research Gave Birth to a New Clinical Surgical Field: A Viewpoint from the Dallas Uterus Transplant Study.

BACKGROUND: Uterus transplantation (UTx) has come of age in the 21st century, building on the 20th century developments in vascular anastomosis and effective immunosuppressive protocols that have enabled solid organ transplantation to become the life-extending and life-improving treatment option we know today. However, UTx has the goal of enabling reproduction, meaning that research has focused on establishment of pregnancy and healthy live birth in addition to surgical technique and immunosuppression. SUMMARY: The Dallas Uterus Transplant Study (DUETS), established at Baylor University Medic

The determinants of staff retention after Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care training in Kenya: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Kenya's maternal mortality ratio is relatively high at 342/100,000 live births. Confidential enquiry into maternal deaths showed that 90% of the maternal deaths received substandard care with health workforce related factors identified in 75% of 2015/2016 maternal deaths. Competent Skilled Health Personnel (SHP) providing emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) in an enabling environment reduces the risk of adverse maternal and newborn outcomes. The study objective was to identify factors that determine the retention of SHP 1 - 5 years after EmONC training in Kenya. METHODS
