Mercury hazards from gold mining to humans, plants, and animals.

Mercury contamination of the environment from historical and ongoing mining practices that rely on mercury amalgamation for gold extraction is widespread. Contamination was particularly severe in the immediate vicinity of gold extraction and refining operations; however, mercury, especially in the form of water-soluble methylmercury, may be transported to pristine areas by rainwater, water currents, deforestation, volatilization, and other vectors. Examples of gold mining-associated mercury pollution have been shown for Canada, the U.S., Africa, China, the Philippines, Siberia, and South Ameri

Toxicity and pathogenicity of Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (Deuteromycotina, Hyphomycetes) and fipronil to the fringe-toed lizard Acanthodactylus dumerili (Squamata: Lacertidae).

Reptiles in arid and semiarid zones are frequently exposed to insecticides sprayed to control locusts and grasshoppers. We evaluated the toxicity and pathogenicity of new biological and chemical control agents to the fringe-toed lizard Acanthodactylus dumerili in Mauritania, West Africa. A mycoinsecticide based on spores of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (isolate IMI 330189, Green Muscle) was tested at high challenge concentrations, using three exposure routes. Thirty-minute inhalation exposure to 3.9 x 10(8) viable conidia/L had no adverse effect. Locomotor ac

Autonomic control of heart rate during forced activity and digestion in the snake Boa constrictor.

Reptiles, particularly snakes, exhibit large and quantitatively similar increments in metabolic rate during muscular exercise and following a meal, when they are apparently inactive. The cardiovascular responses are similar during these two states, but the underlying autonomic control of the heart remains unknown. We describe both adrenergic and cholinergic tonus on the heart during rest, during enforced activity and during digestion (24-36 h after ingestion of 30 % of their body mass) in the snake Boa constrictor. The snakes were equipped with an arterial catheter for measurements of blood pr

Target-Driven Evolution of Scorpion Toxins.

It is long known that peptide neurotoxins derived from a diversity of venomous animals evolve by positive selection following gene duplication, yet a force that drives their adaptive evolution remains a mystery. By using maximum-likelihood models of codon substitution, we analyzed molecular adaptation in scorpion sodium channel toxins from a specific species and found ten positively selected sites, six of which are located at the core-domain of scorpion α-toxins, a region known to interact with two adjacent loops in the voltage-sensor domain (DIV) of sodium channels, as validated by our newly

Mitochondrial gene order adjacent to the control region in crocodile, turtle, and tuatara.

We used the polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of mitochondrial gene junctions adjacent to the 5' end of the control region (light strand orientation) and the 3' end of ND6 to assess whether a representative crocodilian, turtle, or tuatara shares a unique mitochondrial gene order that is found in birds but not in mammals or amphibians. Turtles and crocodiles have the same gene order as mammals, except that crocodile has a tRNAPhe gene inserted between tRNAPro and the 5' end of the control region. Two different arrangements were detected at the 5' end of the control region in the tuatara,

[Investigation of Molecular Differences in Plasmodium spp. Isolates Obtained from Malaria Patients].

Malaria continues to pose a serious threat to more than half of the world’s population each year. The Plasmodium parasites that cause disease are not limited to humans alone; they have a wide range of infections that extend to reptiles, birds, mammals and other vertebrates. Plasmodium species have extraordinary genetic flexibility that allows them to adapt to changes in the environment, giving them the potential to rapidly develop resistance to therapeutics such as antimalarials and to change host specificity. Parasites multiply dynamically in the erythrocytes of vertebrate hosts and during th

Common tenrecs (Tenrec ecaudatus) reduce oxygen consumption in hypoxia and in hypercapnia without concordant changes to body temperature or heart rate.

Common tenrecs (Tenrec ecaudatus) are fossorial mammals that use burrows during both active and hibernating seasons in Madagascar and its neighboring islands. Prevailing thought was that tenrecs hibernate for 8-9 months individually, but 13 tenrecs were removed from the same sealed burrow 1 m deep from the surface. Such group hibernation in sealed burrows presumably creates a hypoxic and/or hypercapnic environment and suggests that this placental mammal may have an increased tolerance to hypoxia and hypercapnia. Higher tolerances to hypoxia and hypercapnia have been documented for other mammal

Molecular Markers in the Study of Non-model Vertebrates: Their Significant Contributions to the Current Knowledge of Tetrapod Glial Cells and Fish Olfactory Neurons.

The knowledge of the morphological and functional aspects of mammalian glial cells has greatly increased in the last few decades. Glial cells represent the most diffused cell type in the central nervous system, and they play a critical role in the development and function of the brain. Glial cell dysfunction has recently been shown to contribute to various neurological disorders, such as autism, schizophrenia, pain, and neurodegeneration. For this reason, glia constitutes an interesting area of research because of its clinical, diagnostic, and pharmacological relapses. In this chapter, we pres

Sacral anatomy of the phytosaur Smilosuchus adamanensis, with implications for pelvic girdle evolution among Archosauriformes.

The sacrum - consisting of those vertebrae that articulate with the ilia - is the exclusive skeletal connection between the hindlimbs and axial skeleton in tetrapods. Therefore, the morphology of this portion of the vertebral column plays a major role in the evolution of terrestrial locomotion. Whereas most extant reptiles only possess the two plesiomorphic sacral vertebrae, additional vertebrae have been incorporated into the sacrum multiple times independently among early-diverging archosaurian (crocodylians + birds) clades. Phytosauria was a diverse, abundant, and cosmopolitan clade of arch

A study on use of animals as traditional medicine by Sukuma Tribe of Busega District in North-western Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Faunal resources have played an extensive range of roles in human life from the initial days of recorded history. In addition to their importance, animals have been acknowledged in religion, art, music and literature and several other different cultural manifestations of mankind. Human beings are acquainted with use of animals for foodstuff, cloth, medicine, etc. since ancient times. Huge work has been carried out on ethnobotany and traditional medicine. Animal and their products are also holding medicinal properties that can be exploited for the benefit of human beings like plants

Presence of putative histidine-rich proteins in the amphibian epidermis.

In amphibian epidermis mucus is thought to constitute the matrix material that links keratin filaments present in cells of the corneous layer. As contrast in mammals, and perhaps in all amniotes, histidine-rich proteins form the matrix material. In order to address the study of matrix molecules in the epidermis of the first tetrapods, the amphibians, an autoradiographic and electrophoretic study has been done after administration of tritiated histidine. Histological analysis of amphibian epidermis shows that histidine is taken up in the upper intermediate and replacement layers beneath the cor

The organization of monoamine-containing neurons in the brain of the sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) as revealed by fluorescence microscopy.

The morphological organization of the monoamine-containing neurons in the brain of the sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) was studied by means of the Falck-Hillarp histofluorescence method. No attempt was made to distinguish between norepinephrine and dopamine, both primary catecholamines (CA) yielding a similar yellow-green fluorescence after paraformaldehyde treatment. In the brain stem of this teleost fish, three groups of CA-containing neuronal somata have been found. First, there is a small collection of CA perikarya located just caudal to the obex of the fourth ventricle. The neurons of this med

Loss of the ability to regenerate body appendages in vertebrates: from side effects of evolutionary innovations to gene loss.

The ability to regenerate large body appendages is an ancestral trait of vertebrates, which varies across different animal groups. While anamniotes (fish and amphibians) commonly possess this ability, it is notably restricted in amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals). In this review, we explore the factors contributing to the loss of regenerative capabilities in amniotes. First, we analyse the potential negative impacts on appendage regeneration caused by four evolutionary innovations: advanced immunity, skin keratinization, whole-body endothermy, and increased body size. These innovations em

The advantage of intergenic regions as genomic features for machine-learning-based host attribution of Salmonella Typhimurium from the USA.

Salmonella enterica is a taxonomically diverse pathogen with over 2600 serovars associated with a wide variety of animal hosts including humans, other mammals, birds and reptiles. Some serovars are host-specific or host-restricted and cause disease in distinct host species, while others, such as serovar S. Typhimurium (STm), are generalists and have the potential to colonize a wide variety of species. However, even within generalist serovars such as STm it is becoming clear that pathovariants exist that differ in tropism and virulence. Identifying the genetic factors underlying host specificit

Venomics of the Duvernoy's gland secretion of the false coral snake Rhinobothryum bovallii (Andersson, 1916) and assessment of venom lethality towards synapsid and diapsid animal models.

The Duvernoy's gland secretory proteome of the false coral snake Rhinobothryum bovallii (Costa Rica), unveiled applying bottom-up venomics, comprises a handful of toxins belonging to only three protein families, three-finger toxin (3FTx), cysteine-rich secretory protein (CRISP), and snake venom metalloprotease (PIII-SVMP). Except for small differences in the relative abundance of the PIII-SVMPs, which may be due to individual variability, no evidence of geographic variability or ontogenetic changes was found among the venom proteomes of the juvenile and adult R. bovallii snakes sampled. Testing pterosaur ingroup relationships through broader sampling of avemetatarsalian taxa and characters and a range of phylogenetic analysis techniques.

The pterosaurs first appear in the fossil record in the middle of the Late Triassic. Their earliest representatives are known from Northern Hemisphere localities but, by the end of the Jurassic Period, this clade of flying reptiles achieved a global distribution, as well as high levels of diversity and disparity. Our understanding of early pterosaur evolution and the fundamental interrelationships within Pterosauria has improved dramatically in recent decades. However, there is still debate about how the various pterosaur subgroups relate to one another and about which taxa comprise these. Man

Coralsnake Venomics: Analyses of Venom Gland Transcriptomes and Proteomes of Six Brazilian Taxa.

Venom gland transcriptomes and proteomes of six Micrurus taxa (M. corallinus, M. lemniscatus carvalhoi, M. lemniscatus lemniscatus, M. paraensis, M. spixii spixii, and M. surinamensis) were investigated, providing the most comprehensive, quantitative data on Micrurus venom composition to date, and more than tripling the number of Micrurus venom protein sequences previously available. The six venomes differ dramatically. All are dominated by 2-6 toxin classes that account for 91-99% of the toxin transcripts. The M. s. spixii venome is compositionally the simplest. In it, three-finger toxins (3F

Phylogeny, biogeography, and evolution of two Mediterranean snakes, Malpolon monspessulanus and Hemorrhois hippocrepis (Squamata, Colubridae), using mtDNA sequences.

Variation in 815bp of mitochondrial DNA from two gene fragments (300bp of cytochrome b and 395-515bp of 12S rRNA) for 26 Malpolon monspessulanus, and cytochrome b for a further 21 individuals, indicates that this species originated in the Maghreb area of Northwest Africa. Here, an estimated 3.5-6Mya, it divided into the western M. m. monspessulanus, and an eastern clade including M. m. insignitus and M. m. fuscus. The very limited genetic differentiation between Maghreb and Southwest European populations of this form suggests that it arrived in the Iberian Peninsula only recently. Population g

Angiotensin and other peptides in the control of water and sodium intake.

Several neuroactive peptides have been implicated in thirst and sodium appetite in different species; three peptides are considered here. The best established of these is the octapeptide angiotensin II, which when administered systemically or intracranially causes completely normal drinking behaviour in all vertebrates tested, including many mammals, four or five birds, one reptile and one bony fish. In the rat, in which the original experiments were carried out, injection of a few femtomoles of angiotensin II caused a brisk drinking response within a minute or so of injection at a time of day
