Evaluation of multiple-session delay eyeblink conditioning comparing patients with focal cerebellar lesions and cerebellar degeneration.

The acquisition and timing of delay-conditioned eyeblink responses (CRs) have been shown to be significantly impaired in patients with disorders restricted to the cortex of the superior cerebellum. We were interested if patients improve incidences and timing of CRs across three sessions on three consecutive days. A standard delay paradigm was used in 9 patients with diffuse cerebellar degeneration, 13 patients with ischemic cortical cerebellar lesions and in 13 controls. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MR imaging) was used to ensure that hemispheral lobules VI and/ or Crus I were l

Association between average screen time and dry eye disease: a secondary analysis of publicly available cross-sectional data.

BACKGROUND: The pervasive use of smartphones and other visual display terminals has heightened concerns regarding ocular health, especially the development or exacerbation of dry eye disease (DED) and inflammatory conjunctivitis. Prolonged screen viewing is consistently linked to a reduced spontaneous blink rate, accelerated tear-film evaporation, and a shortened tear-film break-up time (TBUT), factors that synergistically promote tear-film instability and ocular discomfort. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between excessive daily screen exposure and the prevalence o

Pinpointing genomic regions conferring herbicide tolerance in cassava via genome-wide association mapping.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a tropical crop of major socioeconomic importance, whose productivity can be limited by sensitivity to herbicides used for weed management. This study aimed to perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 194 cassava genotypes to identify genomic regions associated with tolerance to the herbicides mesotrione, S-metolachlor, and chloransulam-methyl. The evaluations performed at 3, 6, 9, 15, and 30 days after application (DAA) were used to characterize the temporal progression of phytotoxicity. Based on this analysis, the phenotype obtained at 9 days af

An IRAT109 NAM population: Genetic characterization and mapping utility for trait dissection in japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Complex agronomic traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.) are controlled by many genetic loci; however, dissection is often constrained in biparental mapping populations by limited recombination and narrow genetic diversity, and in diversity sets by spurious associations arising from cryptic relatedness. To overcome these limitations, we developed a nested association mapping (NAM) population of 422 recombinant inbred lines by crossing the upland tropical japonica IRAT109 with three genetically diverse japonica donors (Norin PL8, Langi, and RL11). Genotyping identified 4515 high‑quality polymorphic s

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and the Ocular Surface: A Narrative Review of Restoration, Remodeling, and Clinical Implications.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have become a recurring topic in ophthalmology, yet most reviews emphasize posterior segment and neuro-ophthalmic disease while giving comparatively little attention to the ocular surface. In this review, we frame the relevant target not as isolated anterior structures but as a proposed metabolic surface unit composed of the lacrimal gland, tear film, conjunctiva, meibomian glands, corneal epithelium, corneal nerves, and the periocular tissues that support lid-globe function, and we argue that current evidence is best understood as restorati

Beyond motor recovery: emerging perspectives in the management of peripheral facial palsy-a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral facial palsy (PFP) is a common cranial nerve disorder that may result in persistent impairments extending beyond facial muscle weakness, including facial asymmetry, synkinesis, altered emotional expression, and reduced quality of life. Traditional rehabilitation approaches have predominantly focused on motor recovery and facial muscle function. However, emerging evidence suggests that somatosensory processing, body awareness, body image, and sensorimotor integration may play a more substantial role in recovery and long-term outcomes than previously recognized. Time-Domain Attentional Biases in High Trait Anxiety: Insights From Event-Related Potentials in the RSVP Paradigm.

Attentional bias significantly influences the development, persistence, and exacerbation of anxiety disorders in individuals with high trait anxiety (HTA). Although attention encompasses both temporal and spatial aspects, temporal attentional bias remains underexplored. Traditional views often negatively generalize attentional biases, neglecting their distinct cognitive vulnerabilities and biological adaptive functions. This study aims to explore temporal bias, focusing on its unique characteristics and significance. We used the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task to measure temporal

Motor network organization in healthy development and chronic tic disorders.

Tic disorders (TD) are childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by sudden, repetitive motor and vocal tics, often with partial or complete remission by the time young adulthood is reached. We here investigated motor control and compensatory neural processes in drug-naïve children and adolescents with chronic Motor Tic Disorder or Tourette Syndrome (TD) by examining motor network activity and connectivity compared to healthy controls. Using a reaction time (RT) task under varying cueing conditions, combined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and dynamic causal m

Safe and Effective Management of Dry Eye Symptoms with Hydroxypropyl Guar and Hyaluronic Acid Dual-Polymer Lubricating Eye Drops: A Review of Preclinical and Clinical Studies.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a chronic ocular surface disorder often characterized by decreased tear production and rapid tear evaporation that affect tear film stability and homeostasis. The common symptoms of DED include ocular discomfort, visual disturbances, dryness, and itching. Artificial tears are the mainstay of DED management and supplement one or more layers of the tear film. Artificial tear drops are available as a combination of viscosity-enhancing agents (demulcents/lubricants), humectants, and buffers either with or without preservatives. Artificial tears, as a combination of compone

Clinical efficacy of diquafosol sodium 3% versus hyaluronic acid 0.1% in patients with dry eye disease after cataract surgery: a protocol for a single-centre, randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The number of cataract surgeries, the most common ophthalmic surgery, is expected to increase due to ageing populations. Dry eye disease (DED) is a frequent side effect of cataract surgery, contributing to lower postoperative patient satisfaction and suboptimal quality of vision. It is unclear which eye-drops commonly used in these patients should be recommended for postoperative DED treatment. This study aims to compare the efficacy of topical administration of diquafosol sodium 3% vs hyaluronic acid 0.1% eye-drops in patients with DED after cataract surgery. METHODS AND ANALYS

Brain-Computer Interface: Applications to Speech Decoding and Synthesis to Augment Communication.

Damage or degeneration of motor pathways necessary for speech and other movements, as in brainstem strokes or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), can interfere with efficient communication without affecting brain structures responsible for language or cognition. In the worst-case scenario, this can result in the locked in syndrome (LIS), a condition in which individuals cannot initiate communication and can only express themselves by answering yes/no questions with eye blinks or other rudimentary movements. Existing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices that rely on eye tra

Eye tracking to assess concussions: an intra-rater reliability study with healthy youth and adult athletes of selected contact and collision team sports.

Eye movements that are dependent on cognition hold promise in assessing sports-related concussions but research on reliability of eye tracking measurements in athletic cohorts is very limited. This observational test-retest study aimed to establish whether eye tracking technology is a reliable tool for assessing sports-related concussions in youth and adult athletes partaking in contact and collision team sports. Forty-three youth (15.4 ± 2.2 years) and 27 adult (22.2 ± 2.9 years) Rugby Union and soccer players completed the study. Eye movements were recorded using SMIRED250mobile while partic

Impact of Ocular Surface Temperature on Tear Characteristics: Current Insights.

Infrared (IR) thermographic assessment of ocular surface temperature (OST) is gaining interest as an adjuvant method to evaluate the ocular surface. It is a quick, non-invasive test that causes minimal, if any, discomfort to patients. The purpose of this article was to summarize research on how OST relates to tear film parameters and dry eye disease (DED). PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus searches for specific terms were carried out and eligible articles reviewed. OST of the central cornea is ~34-35°C when measured as a single time-point (typically right after a blink). Dynamically, OST valu

Taste disorder in facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Taste disorder is a common symptom in the general population. Several studies have shown that patients with neurological disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease, develop taste disturbance. Facial onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) is a rare disease characterized by sensory disturbance and weakness spreading from the face to the limbs caudally. We describe a patient with FOSMN who showed taste disorder as the sole initial symptom. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old man who smoked cigarettes developed taste disturbance. Despite using zinc sup
