BACKGROUND: In spite of a monocortical design, miniplate osteosynthesis can injure dental roots directly as well as damage dental substance indirectly by interrupting the apical blood stream.
PURPOSE: The present retrospective study classifies different types of dental root trauma caused by monocortical screws, suggests therapeutic options based on diagnosis, and documents survival probability and prognosis after tooth trauma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During a period of 11 years, 380 patients with permanent dentition underwent miniplate osteosynthesis for the treatment of mandibular fractures,

INTRODUCTION: Recent evidence indicates that the oral health for children in Timor-Leste is deteriorating, with 40% of school children experiencing toothache during 2014. Timorese have easy access to sugar, poor food security and lack of water fluoridation, all of which exacerbate the risk of dental caries. A lack of quality epidemiological data is available to confirm anecdotal information of high caries rates in rural and remote Timor-Leste. Such data are required to inform oral health issues and health policy at both the local and national levels. This study investigated the caries status a

INTRODUCTION: The alveolar bone loss (ABL) and external apical root resorption (EARR) depict the safety of mesialization of mandibular second molars into the extraction space of mandibular first molars. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ABL and EARR after closure of mandibular first molar extraction space by mesialization of second molar on extraction side (ES) as compared to the contralateral non-extraction side (NES).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out using the pre and posttreatment orthodontic records of young adults with complete set of pe

INTRODUCTION: In an era in which patients are becoming more and more demanding and in which there are many ways to satisfy their needs, modern implantology must consider the correct management of soft tissues during treatment planning, aiming for both functional and aesthetic rehabilitation while creating a prosthetic construction that is in harmony not only with the natural dentition of the patient but also with their face. The patient who came to our notice had a rehabilitative prosthetic implant on the left central incisor area, which did not satisfy any functional or aesthetic parameter. F

BACKGROUND: In many mammalian species, once the permanent teeth have erupted, the only change to dentition is a gradual loss of tooth surface/height through wear. The crown of the teeth cannot be repaired once worn. When dental crown tissue has been depleted due to wear, the animal is expected to have a suboptimal body condition. We evaluated the role of tooth wear in causing a reduction of physical condition in adult roe deer females (Capreolus capreolus).
RESULTS: The progressive wearing of the lower cheek teeth was assessed in a Northern Apennines (Italy) population with a new scoring sche

INTRODUCTION/AIM: Gingivitis is a common occurrence in children and may well be thought as a risk factor for the appearance and progression of the diseases of parodontal tissues. It is thus necessary to react in a timely and adequate fashion to prevent the disease to become serious and produce parodontopathy. The aim of the study was to establish the efficacy of hyaluronic acid in the treatment of chronic gingivitis in children.
METHODS: The study enrolled 130 children with permanent dentition. All of the examinees were divided into three groups: group I--50 patients with chronic gingivitis i

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the level of erosive tooth wear (ETW) in young, healthy Finnish men in relation to their sociodemographic background; the number of decayed, missing due to caries, and filled teeth in their permanent dentition (DMFT); and Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Studies on the association between ETW and periodontal health, as well as those related to sociodemographic factors, have so far been inconclusive, indicating a need for further research on these associations.
METHODS: The data used in this study were collected from the database of the "O

BACKGROUND: Apical periodontitis (AP) is a chronic inflammatory response of microbial aetiology. Pathological changes associated with AP may not be visible on radiographic images and may linger without causing any symptoms. Clinicians rely mostly on clinical examination and imaging techniques to establish a diagnosis.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to answer the following question using the PICO format: In the adult human permanent dentition (P), what is the efficacy of diagnostic imaging of the periapical tissues (I) using histopathology as a reference standard (C) in the diagnosis o

BACKGROUND: Dental agenesis (DA) in the permanent dentition is one of the most common dental anomalies, with a prevalence up to 2-10%. Therefore, the aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the prevalence and therapeutic treatment of DA in healthy children (HC) compared to children with systemic disease or congenital malformation (SD/CM).
METHODS: Out of 3407 patients treated at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry of the Justus Liebig University Giessen (Germany) between January 2015 and December 2020, a total of 1067 patients (594 female, 473 male) aged between 4.5 and 18 years

RATIONAL: Dental abnormalities can occur at any stage of tooth development. Of these abnormalities, true generalized microdontia is a rare condition in which all teeth are smaller than normal, while hypodontia is defined as the absence of 1 to 5 teeth. As far as we are aware, no article has reported a case of the non-syndromic occurrence of true generalized microdontia with hypodontia.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 9-year-old girl who had no systemic diseases presented with congenital absence of maxillary lateral incisors bilaterally and small teeth involving the whole dentition.
DIAGNOSES: Based on i

UNLABELLED: Patients with a cleft lip and palate (CLP) deformity require the highest standard of care that the NHS can provide and this requires multidisciplinary care from teams located in regional cleft centres. Care of these cases is from birth to adulthood and requires several phases of intervention, corresponding to the stages of facial and dental development. Management ideally starts pre-natally, following the initial diagnosis, and occasionally pre-surgical appliances are prescribed. The lip is ideally repaired within three months, followed by palate closure between 12 and 18 months. C

BACKGROUND: Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by palmar- plantar hyperkeratosis and rapid periodontal destruction of both primary and permanent dentitions. It has been shown that the disease is caused by cathepsin C gene (CTSC) mutation leading to the deficiency of cathepsin C enzymatic activity. This study demonstrates the clinical manifestations and CTSC mutational and enzymatic activity analyses in a 5-year-old Thai male PLS patient and his parents.
METHODS: Peripheral blood samples were obtained for genomic DNA isolation. All exons of the

BACKGROUND: Hallermann in 1948 and Streiff in 1950 described patients characterised by "bird face", congenital cataract, mandibular hypoplasia, and dental abnormalities. The new syndrome was later defined as Hallermann-Streiff Syndrome (HSS), underlining the differences with regard to Franceschetti's mandibulofacial dysostosis.
CASE REPORT: Examination of a white male affected by Hallermann-Streiff Syndrome revealed facial characteristics typical of the "bird face" in HSS. The nose appeared thin, sharp and hooked; the prominence of the chin was absent in the lateral view; a marked microstomia
