Phylogeny and Molecular Characterisation of PRNP in Red-Tailed Phascogale (Phascogale calura).

Background/Objectives: The normal cellular prion protein (PrPC) is a cell-surface glycoprotein, mainly localised in neurons of the central nervous system (CNS). The human PRNP gene encodes 253 amino acid residues of precursor PrPC. Several studies that investigated the role of PRNP and PrPC in placental mammals, such as humans and mice, failed to reveal its exact function. Methods: In this study, we sequenced and characterised the PRNP gene and PrPC of the marsupial, P. calura, as a strategy to gain molecular insights into its structure and physicochemical properties. Placentals are separated

Epidemiologic aspects of a St. Louis encephalitis outbreak in Fort Walton Beach, Florida in 1980.

From July 10 through August 4, 1980, five cases of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) occurred in and near Fort Walton Beach on the Gulf Coast of northwest Florida. These were the first cases of SLE ever reported from the Florida panhandle. To determine the extent of SLE infection in the community, sera (n = 968) were collected from patients at the local hospital and county public health unit and tested for SLE virus antibody. The SLE attack rate was highest in a centrally located impoverished census tract. There was a trend toward decreasing seroprevalence with distance from the central area of the

Life without TTP: apparent absence of an important anti-inflammatory protein in birds.

Both innate and adaptive immunity in birds are different from their mammalian counterparts. Understanding bird immunity is important because of the enormous potential impact of avian infectious diseases, both in their role as food animals and as potential carriers of zoonotic diseases in man. The anti-inflammatory protein tristetraprolin (TTP) is an important component of the mammalian innate immune response, in that it binds to and destabilizes key cytokine mRNAs. TTP knockout mice exhibit a severe systemic inflammatory syndrome, and they are abnormally sensitive to innate immune stimuli such

Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum and Leishmania (Sauroleishmania) tarentolae in outdoor cats and report of infection in feline-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

BACKGROUND: Feline leishmaniosis (FeL) is mainly caused by Leishmania infantum in the Mediterranean Basin. In Italy, in the same epidemiological context where canine leishmaniosis (CanL) is hyperendemic, a nonpathogenic species, Leishmania tarentolae, may also occur in sympatry, infecting reptiles, dogs, and humans. Thus, this study aimed to assess L. tarentolae infection in outdoor cats along with its co-occurrence with L. infantum and to evaluate risk factors. In addition, the persistence of L. tarentolae in feline-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was herein evaluated in vi

Differential responses of the somatotropic and thyroid axes to environmental temperature changes in the green iguana.

Growth hormone (GH), together with thyroid hormones (TH), regulates growth and development, and has critical effects on vertebrate metabolism. In ectotherms, these physiological processes are strongly influenced by environmental temperature. In reptiles, however, little is known about the direct influences of this factor on the somatotropic and thyroid axes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the effects of both acute (48h) and chronic (2weeks) exposure to sub-optimal temperatures (25 and 18°C) upon somatotropic and thyroid axis function of the green iguana, in comparison to the

Regulation of bone-renal mineral and energy metabolism: the PHEX, FGF23, DMP1, MEPE ASARM pathway.

More than 300 million years ago, vertebrates emerged from the vast oceans to conquer gravity and the dry land. With this transition, new adaptations occurred that included ingenious changes in reproduction, waste secretion, and bone physiology. One new innovation, the egg shell, contained an ancestral protein (ovocleidin-116) that likely first appeared with the dinosaurs and was preserved through the theropod lineage in modern birds and reptiles. Ovocleidin-116 is an avian homolog of matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein (MEPE) and belongs to a group of proteins called short integrin-bindin

Biotransformation and detoxification enzyme (CYP1A2, CYP2E1, and GST) activities in vital organs of rats using liver extracts of Crocodylus siamensis.

BACKGROUND: Detoxification enzymes, including cytochrome P450 isoforms (CYP1A2 and CYP2E1) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), play key roles in xenobiotic metabolism and organ protection. Although crocodile-derived bioactive compounds have gained biomedical interest, the in vivo effects of Crocodylus siamensis liver extract on mammalian detoxification pathways remain largely unexplored. AIM: To evaluate the effects of oral administration of C. siamensis liver extract on phase I (CYP1A2, CYP2E1) and phase II GST detoxification enzyme activities, kinetic parameters (Vmax, Km, catalytic effici

The Surgical Burden of Animal Bites Referred to Orthopaedics: A 10-Year Cohort Study of 168 Patients From a UK Major Trauma Centre.

Introduction Animal bites impose a substantial, yet under-recognised, burden on orthopaedic services. We characterised the epidemiology, injury patterns, management, and short-term outcomes of bite injuries requiring orthopaedic input at a UK Major Trauma Centre over 10 years. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients referred to orthopaedics with animal-bite injuries between December 2015 and March 2025. Eligible cases were identified from a prospectively maintained trauma database and verified against electronic records. Inclusion encompassed mammalian, reptil

Cultural and ethnopharmacological uses of wildlife in the himalayan region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan has a rich cultural and faunal diversity, which sustains several ethnic communities that rely on traditional medicine for primary care. The Himalayan region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan is rich in biodiversity and home to a variety of ethnic communities, each of which practices its own ethnobiological medicine. Despite this, little is known about the use of animal-based traditional medicine in this area. This project seeks to investigate and describe the cultural and medicinal uses of animals among indigenous groups in the study area. METHODS: The study was carri

Biomechanics of the intramandibular joint in Alligator mississippiensis.

Tetrapod vertebrates possess skulls composed of variably articulating bones which they use to apprehend, process, and ingest food. Natural selection must therefore optimize craniomandibular sutures for load resistance, but sutural patency is required for normal craniofacial development to occur. While mammals seemingly escaped this constraint in their mandible by simplifying it into a single bony element (i.e., the dentary), sauropsids retain a composite mandible with a prominent, and occasionally flexible, intramandibular joint (IMJ) separating the rostral, dentigerous elements from the cauda

Increasing Risk Factors for Imported and Domestic Gnathostomiasis in the United States.

Gnathostomiasis is a foodborne zoonotic helminthic infection, commonly described in Asia and Latin America, which may follow the consumption of raw fish, eels, amphibians, and reptiles infected with muscle-encysted larvae of Gnathostoma species nematodes. After an inoculum of as little as one infective larva and an incubation period of months to years, most infections are characterized by intermittent migratory swellings due to subdermal larval migration. Less commonly, larval migration to the central nervous system may result in radiculomyelopathy or eosinophilic meningoencephalitis with high

Comparative histology of pineal calcification.

The pineal organ (pineal gland, epiphysis cerebri) contains several calcified concretions called "brain sand" or acervuli (corpora arenacea). These concretions are conspicuous with imaging techniques and provide a useful landmark for orientation in the diagnosis of intracranial diseases. Predominantly composed of calcium and magnesium salts, corpora arenacea are numerous in old patients. In smaller number they can be present in children as well. The degree of calcification was associated to various diseases. However, the presence of calcified concretions seems not to reflect a specific patholo

[Transmyocardial laser revascularization in stable and unstable angina pectoris].

Endstage coronary artery disease still remains a therapeutic challenge. An increasing number of patients is no longer amenable for direct revascularization by PTCA or coronary bypass surgery and does also no longer respond to maximum medical therapy. This fact has directed the interest again towards surgical techniques of indirect revascularization, which had been introduced by Beck and other surgeons more than 60 years ago. Among these attempts we can also find transmyocardial needle punctures, firstly performed by Sen in Bombay. In the early eighties it was Mirhoseini, who used a laser for c

Blastocystis spp. at the human-animal interface: a systematic review and meta-analysis of genetic diversity, subtype concordance, and molecular evidence.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological significance of Blastocystis spp. concordance between humans and animals remains uncertain, particularly because evidence based solely on shared subtypes (STs) cannot establish direct epidemiological linkage. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated Blastocystis spp. prevalence at human-animal interfaces and critically synthesized evidence at the subtype (ST), allele, and sequence levels. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were systematically searched from database inception through June 7, 2026, supplemented by Google Scholar and reference-l

Enzymes involved in purine metabolism--a review of histochemical localization and functional implications.

Many enzymes are involved in the biosynthesis, interconversion, and degradation of purine compounds. The exact function of these enzymes is still unknown, but they seem to play important roles other than in purine metabolism. To elucidate their functional roles, it is imperative to clarify their tissue distribution at the cellular or subcellular level. The present review summarizes the currently available information about their histochemical localization and proposed functions. In general, 5'-nucleotidase has been considered as a marker enzyme for the plasma membrane, and is considered to be

Nonvisual photoreceptors of the deep brain, pineal organs and retina.

The role of the nonvisual photoreception is to synchronise periodic functions of living organisms to the environmental light periods in order to help survival of various species in different biotopes. In vertebrates, the so-called deep brain (septal and hypothalamic) photoreceptors, the pineal organs (pineal- and parapineal organs, frontal- and parietal eye) and the retina (of the "lateral" eye) are involved in the light-based entrain of endogenous circadian clocks present in various organs. In humans, photoperiodicity was studied in connection with sleep disturbances in shift work, seasonal d
