The predictive capacity of psychiatric and psychological polygenic risk scores for distinguishing cases in a child and adolescent psychiatric sample from controls.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric traits are heritable, highly comorbid and genetically correlated, suggesting that genetic effects that are shared across disorders are at play. The aim of the present study is to quantify the predictive capacity of common genetic variation of a variety of traits, as captured by their PRS, to predict case-control status in a child and adolescent psychiatric sample including controls to reveal which traits contribute to the shared genetic risk across disorders. METHOD: Polygenic risk scores (PRS) of 14 traits were used as predictor phenotypes to predict case-control stat

Associations Between Defence-Style, Eating Disorder Symptoms, and Quality of Life in Community Sample of Women: A Longitudinal Exploratory Study.

Background and Aim: Eating Disorders (EDs) impact an estimated 15% of the global population and are linked to maladaptive defence-styles (coping strategies) and poorer mental health outcomes. Defence-styles have been grouped into immature, neurotic, and mature behaviours. Studies have yet to examine all three defence-styles in ED symptomatic individuals over an extended period of time. The current study aimed to investigate using converse analysis the relationships between defence-style and ED outcomes over a 5-years period. Methods: Participants (n = 216, mean age 33 years) were recruited thr

Personality and Suicidal Behavior in Old Age: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates generally peak in the second half of life and are particularly high in older men; however, little is known about the contribution of dispositional factors to late-life suicide. Maladaptive personality traits have been strongly implicated in suicide among younger adults, but the extent to which they continue to play a role in late-life suicidal behavior is unclear. We also do not know whether specific personality profiles interact with the stressors of aging to cause suicidal behavior. METHODS: We sought to synthesize the data on personality pathology in late-life sui

Childhood abuse affects emotional closeness with family in mid- and later life.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge about the effects of early life adversity on kin relationships in later years is sparse. The purpose of this study was to examine if childhood abuse and adversity negatively influences emotional closeness with family in mid- and later life. A second goal was to determine the role of psychosocial resources and personality traits in buffering the effects of early adversities. Gender and cohort differences were explored to see if men were differentially affected than women and whether middle-aged adults (35-49 years old) were differentially affected than older adults (50-74 y

[Non-suicidal self-injury disorder as a possible mental illness category and the Hungarian adaptation of a questionnaire developed to measure].

Introduction: Non-suicidal self-injury disorder is a severe form of non-suicidal self-injury, listed in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition) as a condition in need of further study. The validity of this diagnostic category, which is still undergoing scientific testing, has been confirmed by a number of studies, highlighting that when it is associated with other mental disorders, more severe symptoms and psychosocial impairment are present. Objective: Our study tested the presence and characteristics of non-suicidal self-injury disorder in an adult clin

The structure of personality in Parkinson's disease and the effects of age, years since diagnosis, and impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by motor and cognitive symptoms. However, emerging evidence suggests that personality alterations may also be present, potentially affecting patients' quality of life and clinical outcomes. Prior studies have identified patterns such as lower openness and extraversion and higher neuroticism in PD patients, although findings have been inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate the structural organization of personality in PD using a network-based approach, and to examine the influence of

The relationship between public stigma, self-stigma, and non-suicidal self-injury in outpatient adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Stigma has a profound impact on the mental health of adolescents. However, empirical evidence on the association between stigma and non-suicidal self-injury among outpatient adolescents remains limited. This study aims to investigate the levels of stigma and self-injury among outpatient adolescents and to explore the relationship between stigma and self-injury. METHODS: A total of 130 adolescents aged 12 to 18 who met the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for non-suicidal self-injury and visited the psychiatric outpatient clinic between February and October 2024 were recruited for the s

Safety, adherence, and compliance in a RCT of supervised exercise training among persons with multiple sclerosis who have slowed cognitive processing speed.

BACKGROUND: Safety, adherence, and compliance have been poorly-characterized in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of exercise training within multiple sclerosis (MS) research. The MoXFo initiative recently proposed standard criteria for defining exercise safety, adherence, and compliance, yet these criteria have infrequently been applied within an exercise training RCT involving people with MS. OBJECTIVE: This study applied published criteria for characterizing safety, adherence, and compliance within a RCT that compared 12-weeks of supervised treadmill walking exercise (TMWX) training (int

Association of disrupted circadian rhythmicity with mood disorders, subjective wellbeing, and cognitive function: a cross-sectional study of 91 105 participants from the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of sleep and circadian rhythmicity is a core feature of mood disorders and might be associated with increased susceptibility to such disorders. Previous studies in this area have used subjective reports of activity and sleep patterns, but the availability of accelerometer-based data from UK Biobank participants permits the derivation and analysis of new, objectively ascertained circadian rhythmicity parameters. We examined associations between objectively assessed circadian rhythmicity and mental health and wellbeing phenotypes, including lifetime history of mood disorde

Adaptive and maladaptive rumination after loss: A three-wave longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVES: Rumination is a risk factor after bereavement, predicting higher concurrent and prospective symptom levels of complicated grief and depression in mourners. Research has shown that rumination may consist of adaptive and maladaptive subtypes, but there has been a paucity of research in this topic in the bereavement area. Therefore, we aimed to clarify whether functional and dysfunctional forms of rumination can be distinguished after loss. DESIGN: Two-hundred and forty-two adults, who lost a first-degree family member on average 10 months previously, filled out questionnaires at thr

A multidimensional risk factor model for suicide attempts in later life.

BACKGROUND: Elderly suicide is a public health problem worldwide, and the risk factors are multidimensional. Chronic mental health problems, personality traits, stressful life events, comorbid medical conditions, social isolation, unemployment, and poverty are associated with higher risk for suicide in later life. There was a relative paucity of data on the neurobiological markers of elderly suicide. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the conjoint roles of cerebrovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and other established biopsychosocial risk factors in older adults who had made a recent suicide attempt.

Associations of modifiable risk factors with depression and anxiety in women and men: evidence from the UK Biobank.

Depression and anxiety are common mental disorders with substantial public health burden, yet the relative contributions of potentially modifiable physiological, psychosocial, and female-specific reproductive factors to their development remain incompletely understood, particularly across sex and age groups. We aimed to examine the associations of these factors with incident depression and anxiety in women and men and to estimate their population attributable fractions (PAFs). This prospective cohort study included 87,648 participants from the UK Biobank (44,383 women and 43,265 men) recruited

Psychological Factors Influencing Pain Perception and Experience in Women Undergoing Mammography: A Systematic Review.

Pain during mammography is a common experience among women and has been identified as a potential barrier to adherence to breast cancer screening programs. While technical and biological factors contribute to pain, emerging evidence suggests that psychological factors may significantly influence pain perception and experience during mammography. This systematic review, therefore, aims to examine the association between psychological factors and the experience of pain during mammography, as well as the intensity of pain experienced during mammography, as measured through validated pain scales o

Identifying Insomnia From Social Media Posts: Psycholinguistic Analyses of User Tweets.

BACKGROUND: Many people suffer from insomnia, a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling and staying asleep during the night. As social media have become a ubiquitous platform to share users' thoughts, opinions, activities, and preferences with their friends and acquaintances, the shared content across these platforms can be used to diagnose different health problems, including insomnia. Only a few recent studies have examined the prediction of insomnia from Twitter data, and we found research gaps in predicting insomnia from word usage patterns and correlations between users' insomn
