Nitric oxide-mediated dilation of arterioles to intraluminal administration of aldosterone.

The nature of the rapid action of aldosterone on blood vessels, whether endothelium-dependent dilation or smooth muscle-dependent constriction is predominant, is still in dispute. In this study, we administered aldosterone intraluminally or extraluminally to isolated mesenteric and cerebral arterioles of male Wistar rats. Extraluminal administration of aldosterone (10(-11) or 10(-7) M) elicited a transient vasodilatation. The peak response appeared at approximately 5 minutes. In contrast, intraluminal administration of aldosterone elicited a greater and sustained dilation. When aldosterone (10

Early signs of neurolipidosis-related behavioural alterations in a murine model of metachromatic leukodystrophy.

Arylsulfatase A (ASA)-deficient mice represent an animal model for the lysosomal storage disorder metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). Although the model has been applied in pathophysiological and therapeutic studies, the behavioural phenotype of ASA(-/-) mice is only partially characterized, and the most decisive outcome measures for therapy evaluation only emerge beyond 1 year of age. Presently, ASA(-/-) mice and ASA(+/-) control mice were studied at 6 and 12 months of age on an extensive battery including tests of neuromotor ability, exploratory behaviour, and learning and memory. Overt sign

Skull stripping tools in pediatric T2-weighted MRI scans: a retrospective evaluation of segmentation performance.

INTRODUCTION: For brain maturity assessment of infants aged above 6 months, T2-weighted MRI scans are recommended. Prior to automated brain tissue analysis, skull stripping is typically applied. However, most skull stripping tools neither focus on T2-weighted scans nor on pediatric cohorts. Here, we present the evaluation results of seven common skull stripping tools in a comparably large pediatric cohort. METHODS: This study is based on 199 T2-weighted scans of children under the age of 5 years retrospectively acquired from the clinical routine at Hannover Medical School. We established a ma

Neuroanatomical Features of NAA10- and NAA15-Related Neurodevelopmental Syndromes.

BACKGROUND: NAA10-related (Ogden Syndrome) and NAA15-related neurodevelopmental syndromes present with varying degrees of intellectual disability, hypotonia, congenital cardiac abnormalities, seizures, and delayed speech and motor development. While there is much data on the clinical manifestations of these conditions, there are few radiologic reports describing the neuroanatomical abnormalities present on imaging. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to provide neuroimaging analyses for a subset of probands with NAA10- and NAA15-related neurodevelopmental symptoms and assess severity, common radiologic a

Map-based B0 shimming for single voxel brain spectroscopy at 7T.

While B0 shimming is an important requirement for in vivo brain spectroscopy, for single voxel spectroscopy (SVS), the role for advanced shim methods has been questioned. Specifically, with the small spatial dimensions of the voxel, the extent to which inhomogeneities higher than second order exist and the ability of higher order shims to correct them is controversial. To assess this, we acquired SVS from two loci of neurophysiological interest, the rostral prefrontal cortex (rPFC; 8 cc) and hippocampus (Hc; 9 cc). The rPFC voxel was placed using SUsceptibility Managed Optimization (SUMO) and

Retinal Vascular Signs and Cerebrovascular Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular disease (CeVD), including stroke, is a leading cause of death globally. The retina is an extension of the cerebrum, sharing embryological and vascular pathways. The association between different retinal signs and CeVD has been extensively evaluated. In this review, we summarize recent studies which have examined this association. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We searched 6 databases through July 2019 for studies evaluating the link between retinal vascular signs and diseases with CeVD. CeVD was classified into 2 groups: clinical CeVD (including clinical stroke, silent cere

Effect of cervical manipulation on vertebral artery and cerebral haemodynamics in patients with chronic neck pain: a crossover randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: It is hypothesised that cervical manipulation may increase the risk of cerebrovascular accidents. We aimed to determine whether cervical spine manipulation is associated with changes in vertebral artery and cerebrovascular haemodynamics measured with MRI compared with neutral neck position and maximum neck rotation in patients with chronic neck pain. SETTING: The Imaging Research Centre at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty patients were included. The mean age was 32 years (SD ±12.5), mean neck pain duration was 5.3 years (SD ±5.7) and mean ne

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging for single subject diagnosis in neurodegenerative diseases.

Although magnetic resonance imaging is a standard investigation in neurodegenerative disease, sensitive and specific markers for the underlying histopathological diagnosis are largely lacking. This report presents evidence to indicate that corticobasal degeneration and progressive supranuclear palsy, in particular, might be identifiable at a single subject level with diffusion tensor imaging. Patients with clinical diagnoses of Alzheimer's disease, semantic dementia and non-fluent primary progressive aphasia (n = 9 each) were contrasted with control subjects (n = 26) with the diffusion tensor

Significant correlation between cerebral hypoperfusion and neuropsychological assessment scores of patients with mild cognitive impairment.

PURPOSE: The regions of significant correlation between cerebral hypoperfusion and neuropsychological assessment scores were evaluated using (99m)Tc-HMPAO SPECT in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) on the basis of its three subtypes, namely, single-domain amnestic MCI (aMCI-s), multiple-domain amnestic MCI (aMCI-m), and nonamnestic MCI (naMCI), following which comparisons were made among the three subtypes of MCI. METHODS: Regions of hypoperfusion were determined by comparing the three groups with the normal group. Neuropsychological assessment included tests to evaluate attention

Uncomplicated intraventricular hemorrhage is followed by reduced cortical volume at near-term age.

BACKGROUND: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is the most common brain injury among premature infants. Neonates with IVH are at greater risk of impaired neurodevelopmental outcomes, compared with those without IVH. IVH causes destruction of the germinal matrix and glial precursor cells, with possible effects on cortical development. OBJECTIVE: To investigate cortical development after uncomplicated IVH (with no parenchymal involvement and no posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus). We hypothesized that uncomplicated IVH would be followed by reduced cortical volume among premature infants at near-term

Pneumolysin contributes to dysfunction of nasal epithelial barrier for promotion of pneumococcal dissemination into brain tissue.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the major pathogens responsible for bacterial meningitis and neurological sequelae. The present study was conducted to identify a non-hematogenous route used by S. pneumoniae to gain access to brain tissue without causing bacteremia or pneumonia, as well as bacterial and host factors involved in this process. To investigate the molecular mechanisms and dissemination pathways of pneumococcal infection in brain tissue, mice were intranasally inoculated with S. pneumoniae strain EF3030, a clinical isolate from a patient with otitis media. Pneumococci were isolat

Magnetic Resonance Elastography-Based Technique to Assess the Biomechanics of the Skull-Brain Interface: Repeatability and Age-Sex Characteristics.

Increasing concerns have been raised about the long-term negative effects of subconcussive repeated head impact (RHI). To elucidate RHI injury mechanisms, many efforts have studied how head impacts affect the skull-brain biomechanics and have found that mechanical interactions at the skull-brain interface dampen and isolate brain motions by decoupling the brain from the skull. Despite intense interest, in vivo quantification of the functional state of the skull-brain interface remains difficult. This study developed a magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) based technique to non-invasively asse

Ghrelin and ghrelin receptor (GHSR) in Chinese alligator, alligator sinensis: Molecular characterization, tissue distribution and mRNA expression changes during the active and hibernating periods.

The Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) is a freshwater crocodilian endemic to China. So far, the endocrine regulation of feeding and growth in Chinese alligator is poorly understood. In this study, the molecular structure and tissue expression profiles of ghrelin and its receptor GHSR in the Chinese alligator were characterized for the first time. The full-length cDNA of ghrelin was 1770 bp, including a 37 bp 5 '-UTR (untranslated region), a 435 bp ORF (open reading frame) and a 1298 bp 3 '-UTR. The ORF encodes a ghrelin precursor, which consists of 145 amino acid residues, including a sig

Remapping in Cerebral and Cerebellar Cortices Is Not Restricted by Somatotopy.

A fundamental organizing principle in the somatosensory and motor systems is somatotopy, where specific body parts are represented separately and adjacently to other body parts, resulting in a body map. Different terminals of the sensorimotor network show varied somatotopic layouts, in which the relative position, distance, and overlap between body-part representations differ. Since somatotopy is best characterized in the primary somatosensory (S1) and motor (M1) cortices, these terminals have been the main focus of research on somatotopic remapping following loss of sensory input (e.g., arm a

[Complications and failures of endoscopic ventriculostomy of the third ventricle].

The study was undertaken to elucidate the poor outcomes of endoscopic ventriculostomy of the third ventricle (EVTV), including complications and dysfunctions. A series of 249 consecutive EVTV (the mean age of 15 years in 247 patients) made at the Institute of Neurosurgery in 1995 to 2003 was analyzed. The causes of hydrocephalus were benign tumors in 95 (38%) patients, stenosis of the aqueduct of the cerebrum in 73 (29%), malignant tumors in 63 (25%), and other causes in 18 (7%) cases. Obstruction in the posterior cranial fossa was present in 12 (5%); prior to EVTV, 24 (10%) and 36 (15%) patie

Simple and quick non-invasive evaluation of circulatory condition of cerebral arteries by clinical application of the "Bi-Digital O-Ring Test".

Using the "Bi-Digital O-Ring Test," generalized abnormal circulation of the distribution of the 3 cerebral arteries at each side of the brain (i.e., anterior cerebral artery, middle cerebral artery and posterior cerebral artery) can be predicted, without any expensive instruments usually in a few minutes. When abnormality was found in the bifurcation area of the common carotid artery by the "Bi-Digital O-Ring Test," there were always abnormal findings of the area of the brain where circulation was coming from either one or both of the anterior or middle cerebral arteries. When abnormal "Bi-Dig

Influence of age on brain edema formation, secondary brain damage and inflammatory response after brain trauma in mice.

After traumatic brain injury (TBI) elderly patients suffer from higher mortality rate and worse functional outcome compared to young patients. However, experimental TBI research is primarily performed in young animals. Aim of the present study was to clarify whether age affects functional outcome, neuroinflammation and secondary brain damage after brain trauma in mice. Young (2 months) and old (21 months) male C57Bl6N mice were anesthetized and subjected to a controlled cortical impact injury (CCI) on the right parietal cortex. Animals of both ages were randomly assigned to 15 min, 24 h, and 7
