Quantification Challenges in Polymer Analysis in Urban Runoff and Wastewater using Pressurized Liquid Extraction and Double-Shot Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

Microplastics are persistent environmental pollutants with potential risks to ecosystems and human health. This study optimized methods for isolating and quantifying polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) in environmental water and wastewater samples using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) combined with pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The optimized two-step PLE protocol, consisting of methanol pre-extraction at 100 °C followed by tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 180 °C, achieved MP recoveries of 43-58%. Calibration cur

Bacteria isolated from soil degrade low-density polyethylene for growth and polyhydroxyalkanoate synthesis.

The low-density polyethylene (LDPE) used in food packaging contributes significantly to the environmental accumulation of microplastics and plastic waste. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize bacteria from plastic waste-contaminated soils that degrade LDPEs. After 16 weeks of degradation, the greatest percentage of LDPE weight loss were achieved with the bacterial consortium and Chitinophaga oryzae NT1-2 (21.97 ± 8.81 % and 16.14 ± 0.46 %, respectively). After bacteria were exposed to LDPE, numerous new functional groups, including aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids, we

Maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics during gestation and lactation impaired skeletal growth in progeny mice by inhibiting neutrophil extracellular trap formation.

Microplastics and nanoplastics are widely distributed in the natural environment and shown to accumulate in living organisms. While their potential impact on human health has been investigated, significant uncertainties remain regarding their toxic effects and mechanisms of interaction with the human skeletal system. We examined the potential effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs, 100 nm) on skeletal health and the underlying molecular mechanisms using the human RAW264.7 and MC3T3-E1 cell lines as in-vitro models, along with a murine model. Maternal exposure to PS-NPs (10 mg/L) through d

Exposure to high dose of polystyrene nanoplastics causes trophoblast cell apoptosis and induces miscarriage.

BACKGROUND: With rapid increase in the global use of various plastics, microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) pollution and their adverse health effects have attracted global attention. MPs have been detected out in human body and both MPs and NPs showed female reproductive toxicological effects in animal models. Miscarriage (abnormal early embryo loss), accounting for 15-25% pregnant women worldwide, greatly harms human reproduction. However, the adverse effects of NPs on miscarriage have never been explored. RESULTS: In this study, we identified that polystyrene (PS) plastics particles

Tire wear particles concentrations in gully pot sediments.

While tire wear and tear is known to be a major source of microplastics in the environment, its monitoring is still hampered by the lack of analytical methods able to provide concentrations in environmental matrices. Tire wear particles (TWP) present in road runoff enter the drainage system through gully pots, built to prevent sediment deposition in the drainage system, and eventually protect downstream receiving waters. The aim of this study was to detect and quantify TWP in gully pot sediments, by using a novel method combining Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA), Fourier Transform Infrared

Evaluation of the hepatorenal subacute toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics on immunohistochemical, histopathological, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and biochemical changes: The protective role of ellagic acid.

Plastic products are widely used for a variety of purposes. Therefore, exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) products may affect the biological systems of humans and other organisms. Ellagic acid (EA) is a naturally occurring flavonoid compound that exhibits antioxidant activities. This study investigated the potential harmful effects of PS-NPs on the liver and kidney, and to determine the molecular and cellular mechanisms related with exposure to PS-NPs 24 male rats were divided randomly and equally into 4 groups; control (distilled water), PS-NPs (15 mg/kg/day) exposed group, EA (35

Transcriptomics and metabolomics reveal functional nanoplastics-induced male reproductive damage and resveratrol antagonistic effects.

Polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) can undergo surface functionalization under environmental conditions, and their accumulation in living organisms may pose a potential reproductive toxicity risk to males, though the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study employed integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to investigate the molecular mechanisms of testicular injury in male ICR mice induced by a 28-day exposure to plain PS-NPs (PS), amino-modified PS-NPs (PS-NH₂), and carboxyl-modified PS-NPs (PS-COOH) (0.08 μm; 50 mg/kg/day), and to evaluate the concurrent pr

Polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics-induced neurotoxicity in adult male Swiss albino mice with amelioration of betaine: a histopathological, neurochemical, and molecular investigation.

Medicines, food packaging, personal care products, and cosmetics extensively use polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics (PET-NaPs). However, they also have harmful impacts on several organs. Betaine demonstrates potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics. Our goal was to investigate the detrimental impact of PET-NaPs on the mouse brain and evaluate the neuroprotective properties of betaine. We allocated 40 completely mature male Swiss albino mice into four distinct groups: control group, betaine group, PET-NaPs group, and betaine-co-treated group. Following a 30-day duration, eu

Cardiotoxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics and associated mechanism of myocardial cell injury in mice.

AIMS: Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging organic pollutants generated by plastic degradation and are ubiquitous in the environment. They can be accumulated through the food webs and enter the human body through dietary intake, posing health risks. The main target organs of NP accumulation are the lungs, liver, heart, and kidneys. However, compared with that for other target organs, research on the adverse effects of NPs on the heart is limited. We aimed to investigate the toxic effects of polystyrene NPs on the heart and the associated mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-eight male C57BL/6 mi

Maternal exposure to phthalates and nanoplastics, isolated or combined: Impacts on placental structure, development, and antioxidant defense as a trigger for maternal-fetal adversities.

The placenta is an essential maternal-fetal organ for the healthy development of the fetus, linking maternal and fetal circulations. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as phthalates derived from plastic residues, may impair offspring development and increase the risk of metabolic disorders. Plastics also degrade into microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), which can cross the placenta, carrying EDCs and impacting fetal development. The objective of this study was to investigate whether gestational exposure to a phthalate mixture (PM) and NPs interferes with the maternal-fetal inte

Protein corona alleviates adverse biological effects of nanoplastics in breast cancer cells.

Pollution from micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) has long been a topic of concern due to its potential impact on human health. MNPs can circulate through human blood and, thus far, have been found in the lungs, spleen, stomach, liver, kidneys and even in the brain, placenta, and breast milk. While data are already available on the adverse biological effects of pristine MNPs (e.g. oxidative stress, inflammation, cytotoxicity, and even cancer induction), no report thus far clarified whether the same effects are modulated by the formation of a protein corona around MNPs. To this end, here we use pri

Nanoplastics perturb extracellular vesicle-mediated communication in the in vitro and ex vivo bone marrow microenvironment of multiple myeloma.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging environmental contaminants capable of interacting with biological systems, yet their effects on intercellular communication in the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment remain unclear. This study investigated the impact of polystyrene NPs on extracellular vesicle (EV) biogenesis, cargo, and function using in vitro models of multiple myeloma (MM) and stromal cells, supported by ex vivo murine bone and human BM aspirates. Under the experimental conditions used in this study, NPs were efficiently internalized by both malignant and stromal cells, inducing oxidative stre

Field evidence of nylon fishing-net macroplastic embedded in the tissue of a wild pearl oyster (Pinctada fucata): A histological case observation.

The objective of this study was to document and characterise an opportunistic case of macroplastic embedding within the soft tissues of a wild pearl oyster (Pinctada fucata) and to describe the associated tissue-level responses. Most existing research on plastic pollution in bivalves has focused on microplastic (<5 mm) ingestion, whereas the physical incorporation of macroplastic (>5 mm) debris into bivalve tissues remains poorly documented under field conditions. Four adult P. fucata specimens, obtained as bycatch from artisanal gill-net fishing off the southeastern coast of India (Nagapattin

Updating the Role of JUNO and Factors Involved in Its Function during Fertilization.

INTRODUCTION: The final step of the fertilization process involves gametes adhesion and fusion. JUNO is an essential folate receptor 4 protein present in the ooplasm of oocytes, which binds to IZUMO1, its receptor on the sperm surface. Both proteins are indispensable for the sperm-oocyte interaction, and their absence results in infertility. Despite the importance of JUNO in reproduction, there is still controversy about how different factors affect the functionality of JUNO. Therefore, the goal of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of what we know so far about the presence and

Aging of disposable face masks in landfill leachate poses cyto-genotoxic risks to Allium cepa: Perils of uncontrolled disposal of medical waste.

The accumulation of disposable face masks (DFMs) has become a significant threat to the environment due to extensive use during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this research, we investigated the degradation of DFMs after their disposal in landfills. We replicated the potential degradation process of DFMs, including exposure to sunlight before subjecting them to synthetic landfill leachate (LL). After exposure to UV radiation, all three layers of the DFMs displayed surface abrasions and fractures, becoming less stable with increased UV exposure duration, indicating an aging process. Changes in the su

The impact of exposure to phthalates in thyroid function of children and adolescents: a systematic review.

Phthalic acid esters, or phthalates, are plasticizers commonly used in the plastics industry and they are known for their endocrine-disrupting effects. Numerous epidemiological studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of phthalate exposure on thyroid function, both in adults and children. However, there is still considerable debate surrounding this issue. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to clarify existing evidence and offer new insights into the magnitude of this disruption and its potential consequences for children and adolescents' health. A comprehensive literature

Experimental Approaches for Characterizing the Endocrine-Disrupting Effects of Environmental Chemicals in Fish.

Increasing industrial and agricultural activities have led to a disturbing increase of pollutant discharges into the environment. Most of these pollutants can induce short-term, sustained or delayed impacts on developmental, physiological, and behavioral processes that are often regulated by the endocrine system in vertebrates, including fish, thus they are termed endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Physiological impacts resulting from the exposure of these vertebrates to EDCs include abnormalities in growth and reproductive development, as many of the prevalent chemicals are capable of bin

Ecotoxicological assessment of soils polluted with legacy waste in Kerala using the earthworm Perionyx excavatus and terrestrial plants for effective management of legacy waste dumpsites.

The Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) dumpsite in Brahmapuram, Kerala, India, experienced a massive fire incident that burned continuously for 12 days, releasing hazardous smoke and toxic emissions into the nearby areas. The ecological impact, particularly on the terrestrial toxicity of the legacy site resulting from the fire incident, was not thoroughly investigated. The study focuses on the physicochemical properties of MSW soil collected after the fire incident and its effects on Perionyx excavatus and plants using Ecotoxicological tests. The results showed the presence of microplastics such as l

Application of microcosms in research on the impact of PPCP´s on the aquatic environment.

The occurrence of emergent pollutants (include e.g. persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceuticals and personal care products - PPCP´s, surfactants, microplastics and other) in the environment is increasing. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products include, for example, skin cosmetics, toothpastes, perfumes and fragrances, pharmaceutical and veterinary medicines, other health and cosmetic personal care products. Most of these products serve to improve the quality of everyday life, but even at low regular doses they can cause various effects on the environment. The main component of many phar
