We describe a male patient who presented a progressive conductive unilateral hearing loss 20 years after otosclerosis surgery. Computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings suggested a facial schwannoma in its tympanic segment. At the time of revision surgery, a facial schwannoma was found to originate at the tympanic segment, pushing the prosthesis out of the oval window fenestration. The Teflon-piston was repositioned with difficulties in the central platinotomy, and the facial schwannoma was left intact.

Development of the eardrum retraction pocket, as pathologic finding, depends on Eustachian tube dysfunction, onset of the middle ear infection and site of development of retraction on the eardrum. The study is aimed at: 1. Determining the incidence of eardrum retraction pocket and cholesteatoma within it, as well as at the degree of eardrum retraction; 2. Determining of association between eardrum retraction pocket and changes of the eardrum mucosa and pars tensa of the tympanic membrane; 3. Determining of onset and intensity of the bone destruction in eardrum retraction pocket; 4. Examining o

The study of contiguous gene deletion syndromes by using reverse genetic techniques provides a powerful tool for precisely defining the map location of the genes involved. We have made use of individuals with overlapping deletions producing choroideremia as part of a complex phenotype, to define the boundaries on the X chromosome for this gene, as well as for X-linked mixed deafness with perilymphatic gusher (DFN3). Two patients with deletions and choroideremia are affected by an X-linked mixed conductive/sensorineural deafness; one patient, XL-62, was confirmed at surgery to have DFN3, while

The autosomal dominant hereditary Treacher Collins syndrome manifests itself phenotypically in dysmorphogenesis of particularly the first, but also the second branchial arch system. Consequently, 50% of patients with Treacher Collins syndrome have a congenital, generally pure conductive hearing loss resulting from a major or minor ear anomaly. The outcome of surgery to improve patients' hearing varies and is sometimes even disappointing. Thorough analysis of 33 cases (39 operated ears) and the strict application of a classification for the anomaly to each ear enabled us to gain insight into th

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can be described as a chronic, inflammatory, progressive, autoimmune disorder characterized by generalized inflammation of the synovial joints, which hereby triggers the progressive erosion of both cartilage and bone. Anakinra is a recombinant form of human IL-1 receptor antagonist which targets the type I IL-1 receptor. In the present systematic review, we intend to evaluate the effectiveness and adverse effects of interleukin-1 antagonists in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The database search was carried out using PubMed (M

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) recordings were made in two groups of middle ear pathology--middle ear effusion and otospongiosis before and after rehabilitation surgery. The ability of ABR recordings to quantify the hearing improvement (threshold and latency) after insertion of ventilating tubes and after stapedioplasty is demonstrated.

INTRODUCTION: Stapes gusher means the leakage of perilymphatic liquid when opening the perilymphatic cistern. The perilymphatic liquid with a high pressure gushes with a great flow out of the cistern when the stapedotomy is executed. Otosclerosis surgery sometime brings to light abnormal contact between the inner ear and the sub-arachnoidian spaces in patients who didn't presented ear malformations. It's a very rare event (1/1000) which is different from a much more common and more moderate form of perilymphatic liquids high pressure (1/200). About 4 clinical observations, we compared our expe

The middle ear, which lies between the external auditory canal and the inner ear (cochlea), comprises the tympanic membrane, the ossicular chain (i.e. malleus, incus, and stapes), as well as the associated muscles, ligaments, and the middle ear cavity. Its primary function is to transmit vibratory energy (sound pressure) from the air to the cochlear fluids via the ossicular chain. This part of the ear can be damaged by cholesteatoma, which can affect all three ossicles, necessitating ossiculoplasty to restore sound transmission. Ossiculoplasty is the preferred intervention for restoring the me

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to present and evaluate a surgical approach for placing a Vibrant Soundbridge® (VSB) device prior to auricular reconstruction in patients with microtia atresia. The goal was to determine whether an incision line for VSB implantation, located sufficiently posterior to the planned area of auricular reconstruction, could prevent interference with subsequent auricular surgeries and ensure stable hearing outcomes.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined four patients with unilateral microtia who underwent VSB implantation before auricular reconstruction. The incision line

Introduction: Knowledge about the physiology of a healthy middle ear is essential for understanding the activity and mechanics of the ear as well as the basics of ossiculoplasty. Trauma of the epithelial lining of the tympanic cavity as well as the ossicular chain may be the result of chronic inflammation and surgery. Depending on the observed changes of the middle ear lining, there are several types of distinguished chronic inflammatory changes: simple, with cholesteatoma, with the formation of inflammatory granulation tissue, in course of specific diseases.
<b

Otosclerosis is a bone dysplasia limited to the otic capsule causing abnormal resorption and redeposition of bone. The existence of the entity "pure labyrinthine otosclerosis" or "cochlear otosclerosis" is not accepted by all authors; however, there is clinical and histologic evidence to support the existence of a progressive sensorineural hearing loss due to otospongiotic-otosclerotic lesions of the labyrinthine capsule, although diagnosis of this condition may be difficult. The involvement of the inner ear is described as degenerative changes in the spiral ligament, stria vascularis, organ o

CONCLUSIONS: The results reported here provide the first evidence of the production of superoxide, a biologically relevant reactive oxygen species (ROS), in human inner ear perilymph (hIP) in pathological conditions, by the activity of the xanthine dehydrogenase/xanthine oxidase (XA/XO) enzyme system.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence of ROS in hIP.
METHODS: Since damage and apoptosis of inner ear hair cells may occur as a result of ROS-mediated injury, we investigated the presence and production of ROS in 105 hIP samples; 98 collected from patients affected by profound sensorineural he

Conductive hearing loss was detected in a boy with a previous diagnosis of dyschondrosteosis. Dyschondrosteosis is a rare inherited condition characterized by mesomelic dwarfism and Madelung's deformity. The syndrome can be caused by mutations in the SHOX gene, and in that case, the pattern of inheritance is pseudoautosomal dominant. Indeed, SHOX mutation analysis in our patient revealed a deletion. The combination of dyschondrosteosis and conductive hearing loss has been reported in 2 previous cases. In our patient, exploratory tympanotomy revealed ankylosis of the stapes and a malformed incu

The combined Heermann and Tos (CHAT) technique is the combination of Heermann's 'cartilage palisade tympanoplasty' and Tos's 'modified combined approach tympanoplasty = modified intact canal wall mastoidectomy'. The first author (Cem Uzun) performed the CHAT technique as a one-stage operation in 15 ears of 15 patients with cholesteatoma. Two patients (one with a follow up of less than six months and one who did not show up at the final re-evaluation) were excluded from the study. Median age in the remaining 13 patients was 37 years (range: 14-57 years). Cholesteatoma type was attic, sinus (Tos
