Oral health of 6-7 year-old children according to the Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST) index.

BACKGROUND: The index of Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST) reveals a range of caries development from a non-cavitated status to advanced lesions. The aim of the present study was to explore the oral health status of 6- to 7-year-old children based on the CAST index in relation to oral health knowledge and background determinants. METHODS: A multi-stage cluster random sampling method was applied and after ethical clearance, clinical examination was performed (Kappa = 0.89). The status of caries and oral hygiene was recorded according to the CAST index and OHI-Simplified (OHI-S) i

TEETH IMPACTION: CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS.

The aim of the study was investigation of statistics of impaction and semi-impaction in permanent dentition in the population of Georgia, revealing the correlation and feedback of expressed adentia and retention in different groups of teeth. Study was also aimed to determine any regularity in reduction of tooth number of the skeleto-dental system. To comply with this goal, 1000 panoramic images of patients, from 12 to 35 years of age 651 women and 349 men have been examined. In our study cases 1 and 3 were similar. In both situations possible cause of impaction was dental crowding and space de

The influence of brachytherapy on tooth development: a longitudinal study of pediatric head and neck tumor survivors.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial brachytherapy is an effective and organ-preserving radiotherapeutic modality for pediatric and adolescent patients with head and neck tumors, offering favorable outcomes with minimal impact on surrounding normal tissues. However, the long-term effects of brachytherapy on dental development in young patients remain underexplored, despite clinical observations of tooth anomalies in tumor survivors. This study aimed to provide longitudinal outcomes of tooth developmental anomalies in pediatric and adolescent tumor survivors who underwent head and neck interstitial brachyt

Functional appliances and airway in class II malocclusion : An umbrella review and re-analysis of three meta-analyses.

PURPOSE: The potential influence of functional appliances on respiratory health has recently gained attention, though evidence remains inconsistent. This umbrella review and meta-analysis evaluated the impact of functional appliances on the upper airway area and volume as primary aims, and any patient-centered reported outcomes in the literature as a secondary aim. METHODS: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024540778). Systematic reviews and meta-analysis including patients as individuals in the prepubertal or circumpubertal growth phases. Specifically, this refers to growing pati

Dental Practitioners' Thresholds for Restorative Intervention in Carious Lesions: A Survey-Based Systematic Review Update.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Despite evidence supporting the clinical and cost-effectiveness of minimally invasive dentistry (MID), its adoption by the dental profession has been slow. A systematic review in 2016 found the majority of dentists intervene invasively earlier than necessary. The aim was to update this review of the assessment of dental practitioners' thresholds for providing restorative treatment for carious lesions given changes in evidence, teaching, and guidelines since 2016. The primary outcome was dental practitioners' restorative thresholds (the extent of the lesion when the

Tooth wear and tertiary crowding: a 13-year cohort study in Amazon Indigenous populations.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is an important mechanism for reducing dental dimensions and, consequently, dental crowding. The objective of this cohort study was to examine the relation of tooth wear, adjusted for covariates (age, tooth loss, arch perimeter and intercanine width), on tertiary crowding in Amazon Indigenous populations. METHODS: A sample of 40 Indigenous people in permanent dentition at T0 (baseline) and after 13 years (T1) were evaluated. The sample included 16 males and 24 females belonging to two villages, Arara (n = 22, mean ages 16.6 and 29.9 years) and Assurini do Xingu (n = 18,

Prevalence of self-reported systemic diseases among edentulous patient visiting tertiary care hospital of Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Edentulism(partial/complete) is a significant public health concern, impacting masticatory function, nutritional intake, and overall quality of life. Emerging evidence underscores the bidirectional relationship between oral and systemic health, where chronic oral inflammation like dental caries, periodontal diseases, trauma, and tooth loss may contribute to or exacerbation of systemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. PURPOSE OF STUDY: To determine prevalence of systemic diseases among edentulous patients attending dental

Three-dimensional volumetric evaluation of root resorption in maxillary anteriors following en-masse retraction with varying force vectors - a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Root resorption in orthodontics is associated with direction and magnitude of force application as primary etiological factors. Well-controlled trials that utilize three-dimensional segmentation to detect volumetric changes in tooth structure are required to assess the quantitative nature of root resorption. OBJECTIVE: To assess the severity of root resorption (RR) during retraction of maxillary anteriors with three different force vectors (with and without skeletal anchorage) via cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) superimpositions. TRIAL DESIGN: Three-arm parallel randomized c

Ideal treatment timing of orthodontic anomalies-a German clinical S3 practice guideline.

PURPOSE: Ideal treatment timing in orthodontics is controversially discussed depending on the type and extent of the dysgnathia and malocclusion present, especially with regard to efficiency, patient burden and treatment efforts of early compared to regular or late treatment. This German clinical practice guideline aims to clarify, at which time points an orthodontic anomaly can be effectively treated and how treatment efficiency differs depending on treatment timing. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in various guideline databases and databases PROSPERO, MEDLINE (PubMed),

Customizable interdental splinting for repair of pediatric mandibular fractures in children with mixed dentition: A novel technique.

OBJECTIVE: Repair of pediatric mandibular fractures (PMFs) can be challenging due to the lack of permanent dentition for immobilization, and the presence of unerupted teeth and growth plates in the mandible limiting the space for fixation. Interdental splinting (IDS) has been advocated to provide temporary fixation without the need for mandibular plating; however, there is sparse description of the surgical methodology, and data on long term outcomes are even more limited. The aim of this study is to present our technique and outcomes using a novel technique for IDS repair of pediatric mandibl

Exploring the behavioural determinants of compliance in resilient high-caries-risk patients who improved caries severity.

BACKGROUND: The caries severity in childhood may predict caries conditions in the future and even in adulthood in caries risk models. Nevertheless, the rate of recurrent caries after treatment of severe early childhood caries is high and correlated with behavioural factors, rather than clinical indicators. Compliance with the caries control programme has been demonstrated to prevent root caries development in head and neck cancer patients, suggesting that compliance with treatment protocols is a more important key to bringing about successful outcomes than treatment protocols themselves. Rationale for restoration of carious primary teeth: a review.

BACKGROUND: The literature regarding dental and systemic effects of Early Childhood Caries (ECC), consequences of leaving carious primary teeth untreated, benefits of appropriate treatment, and concerns regarding dental treatment of young children and the potential for dental anxiety, is reviewed. ECC has consequences, affecting both the child's dental health and his/her general health. This paper reviews the literature regarding ECC and its consequences (pain, sepsis, space loss, disruption to quality of life, failure to thrive, effects on intellectual development, greater risk of new carious

Increased Risk of Dentoalveolar Trauma in Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

The prevalence of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) remains unclear. Given these discrepancies, an updated review of the evidence on the risk of TDI in patients with ASD is essential. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prevalence of TDI in patients with ASD and compare it to that in neurotypical patients. This study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024580127) and followed the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search of four databases-MEDLINE/PubMed,

Comparative cranial ontogeny of Tapirus (Mammalia: Perissodactyla: Tapiridae).

Skull morphology in tapirs is particularly interesting due to the presence of a proboscis with important trophic, sensory and behavioral functions. Several studies have dealt with tapir skull osteology but chiefly in a comparative framework between fossil and recent species of tapirs. Only one study examined an aspect of cranial ontogeny, development of the sagittal crest (Holbrook. J Zool Soc Lond 2002; 256; 215). Our goal is to describe in detail the morphological changes that occur during the postnatal ontogeny of the skull in two representative tapir species, Tapirus terrestris and Tapirus

[Unerupted first deciduous molar located higher to the first premolar: a case report].

Tooth eruption is defined as the movement of a tooth from its site of development within the alveolar process to its functional position in the oral cavity. The process of tooth eruption can be divided into different phases: pre-eruptive bone stage, alveolar bone stage, mucosal stage, preocclusal stage, occlusal stage and maturation stage. Any disturbance in these phases can lead to eruptive anomalies. The incidence of unerupted teeth is usually higher among permanent teeth than among deciduous ones. Of the primary teeth reported as unerupted, second deciduous molars are the teeth most frequen

Periodontal disease: an overview for physicians.

Periodontitis is now seen as resulting from a complex interplay of bacterial infection and host response, often modified by behavioral factors. There has been a fundamental change in the prevailing periodontal disease model of the 1960s, which suggested that the susceptibility to periodontitis increases with age, and that all individuals are susceptible to severe periodontal disease. More recent research has changed the belief in universal susceptibility to the current view that only some 5-20% of any population suffer from severe generalized periodontitis, and that only moderate disease affec
