Chronic abdominal pain and dyspareunia in endometriosis: pain therapy with a nerve and muscle stimulation device with biofeedback function.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis (EM) is frequently associated with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and dyspareunia, often linked to secondary pelvic floor dysfunction and hypertonicity. To evaluate whether the use of an intravaginal electromyography (EMG) biofeedback and electrostimulation device reduces pain and improves quality of life in patients with EM. METHODS: In this prospective single-arm-real-world clinical study, 201 women with endometriosis used a home-based intravaginal device for three months (up to eight sessions per week). The intervention included two programs: (1) electrical stimulati

ZFP36 Protects against Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Formation by Regulating Vascular Smooth Muscle Phenotypic Switch.

Cryptosporidiosis is a zoonotic disease caused by a well-known parasitic protozoan called Cryptosporidium. Infection in livestock causes important economic losses among farm animals and its control has a global concern. In this study, internal white and external red layers were separated from pomegranate peels (Punica granatum) then; they were grinded to reach Nano form. Anticryptosporidial effect of their water extracts was investigated in experimentally infected mice. Also, their antioxidant activity, biochemical and histopathological changes were studied. Briefly, hot aqueous extracts of po

Pre- and Post-Kidney Transplant Abdominal Computed Tomography-Based Muscle Measurements and Post-KT Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Early post-kidney transplant (KT) changes likely impact body composition, resulting in adverse post-KT outcomes. We estimated post-KT trajectories of computed tomography (CT)-based muscle quantity/quality and tested whether they were associated with mortality and death-censored graft loss (DCGL) among frail and nonfrail recipients. METHODS: We leveraged a cohort of 294 adult KT recipients (December 2008-February 2020) with CT measurements (muscle quantity: skeletal muscle index; muscle quality: skeletal muscle radiation attenuation). We used mixed linear regression models to est

Surgical management of abdominal wall sheath and rectus abdominis muscle endometriosis: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis, defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity, mainly affects the pelvic viscera and peritoneum. Endometriosis can also occur at sites of surgical incisions on the abdominal wall, mainly in women with a history of cesarean section (CS). The incidence of abdominal wall endometriosis after CS reaches 1%. Clinical suspicion, along with imaging, plays a crucial role in diagnosis. The preferred treatment involves extensive surgical excision with clear margins, ensuring a definitive diagnosis through histopathology examination. CASE

Inhibition of smooth muscle cell death by Angiotensin 1-7 protects against abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) represents a debilitating vascular disease characterized by aortic dilatation and wall rupture if it remains untreated. We aimed to determine the effects of Ang 1-7 in a murine model of AAA and to investigate the molecular mechanisms involved. Eight- to 10-week-old apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (ApoEKO) were infused with Ang II (1.44 mg/kg/day, s.c.) and treated with Ang 1-7 (0.576 mg/kg/day, i.p.). Echocardiographic and histological analyses showed abdominal aortic dilatation and extracellular matrix remodeling in Ang II-infused mice. Treatment with Ang 1-7 l

Reconstruction of Large Full-Thickness Abdominal Wall Defects Using a Free Functional Latissimus Dorsi Muscle.

INTRODUCTION: The large full-thickness abdominal wall defect has to be treated by considering anatomical and functional requirements. The abdominal wall must regain total physiological function, which means that the full thickness abdominal wall defect must be reconstructed anatomically, not only according to the anatomical requirements but also maintaining the functional dynamic voluntary movement. Defects in the abdominal wall alter respiratory mechanics and can impair the diaphragm function. Additionally, muscles of the anterolateral abdominal wall increase the stability of the lumbar regio

Robotic Abdominal Wall Repair with Endoscopic Adductor Lengthening: A Minimally Invasive Approach for Core Muscle Injuries.

Groin pain is a common complaint in sports medicine practices but can be a challenge to accurately diagnose given the expanse of differentials. In the athlete, groin pain may be caused by a core muscle injury, also known as sports hernia or athletic pubalgia. These injuries most frequently occur in young males who participate in explosive and rotationally demanding activities such as soccer, football, and ice hockey, which generate large forces across the trunk and hip joint. These injuries are becoming more frequently diagnosed, in part, due to the utilization of diagnostic modalities, such a

Paraspinal muscle involvement in herpes zoster-induced abdominal wall pseudohernia revealed by electrophysiological and radiological studies.

Segmental zoster paresis is an uncommon complication of herpes zoster, and abdominal wall pseudohernia is rare. Previous reports have emphasized the involvement of anterior rami of spinal nerves, while the involvement of posterior rami has been less frequently reported. We aimed to elucidate the involvement of posterior rami of spinal nerves in abdominal wall pseudohernia. Four patients with a diagnosis of abdominal wall pseudohernia underwent needle electromyography (nEMG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In three patients, nEMG of affected paraspinal muscles showed denervation potential

Changes in multifidus and abdominal muscle size in response to microgravity: possible implications for low back pain research.

PURPOSE: In microgravity, muscle atrophy occurs in the intrinsic muscles of the spine, with changes also observed in the abdominal muscles. Exercises are undertaken on the International Space Station and on Earth following space flight to remediate these effects. Similar effects have been seen on Earth in prolonged bed rest studies and in people with low back pain (LBP). The aim of this case report was to examine the effects of microgravity, exercise in microgravity and post-flight rehabilitation on the size of the multifidus and antero-lateral abdominal muscles. METHODS: Ultrasound imaging w

Co-ordination of spontaneous swallowing with respiratory airflow and diaphragmatic and abdominal muscle activity in healthy adult humans.

Co-ordination of breathing and swallowing is essential for normal pharyngeal function and to protect the airway. To allow for safe passage of a bolus through the pharynx, respiration is interrupted (swallowing apnoea); however, the control of airflow and diaphragmatic activity during swallowing and swallowing apnoea are not fully understood. Here, we validated a new airflow discriminator for detection of respiratory airflow and used it together with diaphragmatic and abdominal electromyography (EMG), spirometry and pharyngeal and oesophageal manometry. Co-ordination of breathing and spontaneou
