Sensory, cognitive, and linguistic factors in the early academic performance of elementary school children: The Benton-IU project.

Standardized sensory, perceptual, linguistic, intellectual, and cognitive tests were administered to 470 children, approximately 96% of the students entering the first grade in the four elementary schools of Benton County, Indiana, over a 3-year period (1995--1997). The results of 36 tests and subtests administered to entering first graders were well described by a 4-factor solution. These factors and the tests that loaded most heavily on them were reading-related skills (phonological awareness, letter and word identification); visual cognition (visual perceptual abilities, spatial perception,

Hospitalizations for painful episodes: association with school absenteeism and academic performance in children and adolescents with sickle cell anemia.

Painful episodes have been identified as one of the most frequent manifestations of sickle cell anemia (hemoglobin HbSS). This retrospective study compared the frequency of hospitalization and the academic performance of two groups of children with HbSS (ages 8 to 18 years) with differing frequencies of pain. A high frequency (HF) group (n = 10) was composed of children who had four or more hospitalizations for pain in the study period; those in the low frequency (LF) group (n = 11) had one or no hospitalizations for pain during the study period. The two groups were matched on age (within 6 mo

The association between health behaviours and academic performance moderated by trait mindfulness amongst university students: an observational study.

OBJECTIVES: To target health communication at less health-conscious groups, evidence on health behaviours' effects on non-health-related outcomes - such as academic performance - is necessary. Recent research has highlighted the associations of various health behaviours on academic performance of university students. However, there is a lack of research investigating the most predominant health behaviours simultaneously and their association with academic performance, as well as the factors that potentially influence the direction or strength of these associations. Therefore, this study invest

A geographic-location-based medical school admissions process does not influence pre-clerkship and licensing examination academic performance.

BACKGROUND: Students are selected for admission to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM U) MD degree program using criteria aiming to maximize access of persons thought most likely to practice in the region, including use of a geographic context score (GCS) which ranks those with lived experience in northern Ontario and/or rurality most highly. This study investigates the effect of this admissions process upon medical school academic performance. METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort design combined with multiple linear regression analysis to investigate the relationship

Performance of the academic research consortium high-bleeding risk criteria in patients undergoing PCI for acute myocardial infarction.

Patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) are at increased risk for thrombotic and bleeding complications compared to patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). The academic research consortium (ARC) recently suggested a set of criteria to identify patients at high bleeding risk (HBR). We sought to evaluate the performance of the ARC-HBR criteria among patients undergoing PCI according to clinical presentation. We included all consecutive patients undergoing PCI at a tertiary-care center. Patients were deemed at HBR if they fulfilled

Academic stress among radiography students: Examining the impact of GPA and class level on student well-being and performance.

BACKGROUND: Academic stress affects student performance, mental health, and retention, especially in radiography programs where students face demanding coursework and clinical training. These pressures often begin early and intensify with each academic year, yet limited research has examined how stress levels vary by GPA and class level. This gap is more evident in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where educational systems and student support structures differ across countries. Addressing this gap is necessary to inform targeted interventions and improve student outcomes. This s

Drawing-based instruction enhances practical performance and academic flow in cardiovascular and respiratory anatomy education: a quasi-experimental study.

Relying on passive, traditional methods in anatomy education hinders deep understanding, whereas adopting active and creative teaching strategies fosters engagement and improves outcomes. Achieving deep immersion and sustained engagement in learning anatomy through learner-centered and active teaching strategies allows learners to understand complex spatial and functional relationships better. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effect of drawing-based instruction on learning outcomes and the academic flow of medical students in the cardiovascular and respiratory system anatomy course.
