Meta-analysis of topical tazarotene in the treatment of mild to moderate acne.

Topical tazarotene has shown superior efficacy over other topical retinoids, including adapalene and tretinoin, in the treatment of mild to moderate acne. A meta-analysis of data from 6 multicenter, double-blind, randomized comparative trials was performed to determine how patient characteristics influence the efficacy and tolerability of topical tazarotene. Data on 468 patients who used tazarotene 0.1% gel or cream once daily for 12 weeks were collected. Topical tazarotene was effective and well tolerated, regardless of patients' acne severity, skin type, sex, or ethnicity. In general, 'using

A Case of Extensive Grover's Disease in a Patient with a History of Multiple Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers.

We report on a 69-year-old man who presented with itching and erythematous papules on his torso and extremities, which were resistant to topical therapy with antibiotics and steroids. Physical examination revealed multiple erythematous papules on his back, neckline, and lower extremities. The lesions had appeared 4 years earlier and usually worsened with heat or extensive sweating. Histopathology of previous skin biopsies had shown multiple cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas or was non-conclusive. Thus, a re-biopsy was performed, revealing acanthosis and focal acantholytic dyskeratosis. These

Combination effects of cosmetic moisturisers in the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.

Cosmetic moisturisers were applied to one side of the face of 18 male Japanese patients with acne vulgaris who were treated with a topical administration of adapalene and clindamycin phosphate gels. We assessed the alleviating effect of the moisturisers on the side effects of the treatment. The severity of acne and the number of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions were measured at 0, 2, and 4 weeks. The water content in the stratum corneum and transepidermal water loss were measured by comparing the moisturiser-treated and untreated sides of the face. The sensation of skin dryness and ir

Defining criteria used to evaluate response to treatment of acne vulgaris.

Results from controlled studies form the basis of overall perceptions regarding the efficacy and safety of specific treatments. In acne vulgaris, determining statistical significance related to mean percentage reduction in inflammatory and noninflammatory lesion counts, investigator global assessment, and patient (subject) global assessment have formed the basis of most studies. Results may be impacted by several mitigating factors related to inclusion and exclusion criteria and variations in study "power." Recently, standards for evaluation of response to acne treatment have been reconsidered

Novel and emerging treatment options for acne vulgaris.

The principal actors in acne are the sebaceous gland, keratinocytes of the follicle and skin microbiome/innate immunity. Current acne treatments are frequently accompanied by side effects or may cause antibacterial resistance. New formulations and emerging treatments with novel mechanisms of action and improved formulations have recently been made available or are currently under development. This review provides an update on the most recent advances in topical or systemic acne therapy related to recent data on the pathophysiology of acne. A review of the most recent literature about new and e

Topical benzoyl peroxide for acne.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a common, economically burdensome condition that can cause psychological harm and, potentially, scarring. Topical benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is a widely used acne treatment; however, its efficacy and safety have not been clearly evaluated. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of BPO for acne. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following databases up to February 2019: the Cochrane Skin Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, and LILACS. We also searched five trials registers and checked the reference lists of relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic review

Expression profiles of human somatic mesenchymal stem cells derived from fresh endometrium, ectopic-endometrium and umbilical cord.

OBJECTIVES: The study investigated the stem cell expression profiles and differentiation capacities of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from different tissues, specifically human eutopic endometrium MSCs (eut-MSCs), ectopic endometrium MSCs (ect-MSCs), and umbilical cord MSCs (UC-MSCs). Our aim was to identify any similarities in subpopulations among these MSCs and lay a foundation for MSCs repair. MATERIAL AND METHODS: MSCs were isolated from endometrial tissue (n = 5), endometriosis tissue (n = 6), and umbilical cords (n = 7). Flow cytometry was used to examine cell phenotype, and three lineag

The Dark Side of Oral Antibiotics: Adverse Events of Consideration in Dermatology.

Antibiotics remain a cornerstone in the management of dermatologic conditions such as acne and hidradenitis suppurativa, underscoring the need for responsible antibiotic stewardship. This article explores the “dark side” of antibiotics, highlighting their role in disrupting the gut microbiome, elevating risks for infections like Clostridium difficile, and increasing resistance in Cutibacterium acnes and other microbes. Emerging evidence also links antibiotic use to reduced vaccine efficacy and diminished responses to cancer immunotherapy. To mitigate these risks, dermatologists sho

50 Years of Topical Retinoids for Acne: Evolution of Treatment.

Since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tretinoin in 1971, retinoids alone or combined with other agents have become the mainstay of acne treatment. Retinoids act through binding to retinoic acid receptors, altering expression levels of hundreds of cellular proteins affecting multiple pathways involved in acne pathogenesis. Retinoids have evolved from first-generation agents, such as tretinoin, through chemical modifications resulting in a second generation (etretinate and acitretin for psoriasis), a third generation (adapalene and tazarotene) and, most recently, a fourth (tri

Newer approaches in topical combination therapy for acne.

Acne vulgaris is a common chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease involving the pilosebaceous unit. Its pathophysiology is multifactorial and complex, including obstruction of the pilosebaceous unit due to increased sebum production, abnormal keratinization, proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), and inflammation. Topical agents are the most commonly used therapy for acne. First generation topicals mainly consist of single agent retinoids, benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and antibacterials that target comedones, P. acnes, and inflammation. Novel topical therapies include combination produc

Acne and rosacea in skin of colour.

Acne and rosacea are common inflammatory skin conditions present in numerous racial and ethnic groups. There are distinct differences in clinical presentation, exacerbating factors, potential triggers and consequences of both conditions in individuals with skin of colour (SOC), classified as Fitzpatrick skin types III-VI. For example, acne can be complicated by the development of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and keloid scarring in SOC, and this can influence treatment choice. Although rosacea is reported less frequently in SOC, this may be the result of delayed diagnosis or late presenta

Topical retinoids for acne.

Topical retinoids are currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of acne vulgaris in nonpregnant, nonlactating patients 12 years of age and older. Their efficacy, safety, and tolerability are well documented for inflammatory and noninflammatory acne with studies repeatedly demonstrating a decrease in the number of lesions, significant improvement in acne severity, improvement in the cosmetic appearance of acne, and the prevention of acne lesions through microcomedone formation. There is some variability between prescription retinoid products regarding efficacy,

Localized comedones and perifollicular hyperpigmentation during tapinarof cream therapy: a case series.

Tapinarof is an aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist approved for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis. While common adverse events include headache and folliculitis, comedones and perifollicular hyperpigmentation are under-recognized. Here, we report eight patients with AD or psoriasis who developed comedones and/or perifollicular hyperpigmentation during therapy. Lesions developed primarily at application sites; however, in one patient, lesions occurred at a distant site. Lesions appeared on the face in six patients, the legs in one and the arms in one. Time of onset ranged fro

The efficacy of a bioactive moisturizer in mitigating side effects of acne therapies: a randomized, investigator-blind, split-face trial.

Acne treatments often cause mucocutaneous side effects. This study compared a bioactive moisturizer (containing 4-t-butylcyclohexanol, licochalcone A, ceramide, and panthenol) with a traditional moisturizer in Asian patients using adapalene/benzoyl peroxide gel or oral isotretinoin. Forty participants applied each moisturizer to one side of the face. Assessments at weeks 0, 2, and 4 included hydration, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), pH, erythema, acne lesion counts, Investigator Global Evaluation of Acne (IGEA), and patient satisfaction. Hydration increased on both sides, with greater impr

Perioral dermatitis: Diagnosis, proposed etiologies, and management.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Perioral dermatitis is a common cutaneous condition characterized by acneiform facial eruptions often with an eczematous appearance. A granulomatous subtype exists in addition to the classic variant. While topical corticosteroids have been largely implicated in this condition, its etiology is not completely understood. METHODS: Using the keywords "corticosteroids," "dermatology," "fusobacteria," "perioral dermatitis," and "periorificial dermatitis," we searched the databases PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE to find the relevant literature. Only articles in English were chosen.
