A 19-year-old Japanese woman developed diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus and optic atrophy. Other abnormal ocular findings included color blindness, elevated dark adaptation threshold and constriction of visual fields. Diabetic retinopathy, which is considered to be rare in this syndrome, also was found in the fundi of this patient. During the nine-year follow-up period, diabetic retinopathy deteriorated despite treatment by photocoagulation and vitrectomy, suggesting the importance of ophthalmological examinations in patients with DIDMOAD syndrome.

We describe two patients with gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina who suffered from vitreous hemorrhages in adolescence. The diagnosis of gyrate atrophy was confirmed biochemically and clinically; hyperornithinemia and a deficiency of ornithine ketoacid transaminase were confirmed biochemically. Typical fundus changes of scalloped chorioretinal atrophies with sharp margins, deteriorated dark adaptation, non-recordable electroretinogram, flat electrooculogram, and constricted visual fields were noted. We believe that the vitreous hemorrhage is an ocular complication in this disorder.

Using electro-oculography, we quantitatively investigated eye movements in nine heavy cocaine abusers and three groups of controls. Plasma levels of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), a major metabolite of brain norepinephrine, in cocaine abusers were reduced to an average of 53% of normal. In this study enzyme glutathione peroxidase was localized in ocular tissue of Lewis rats using the peroxidase antiperoxidase immunohistochemical technique. Antisera to glutathione peroxidase was raised in a rabbit. Immunoreactive glutathione peroxidase was found to be distributed predominantly in the corneal epithelium and endothelium, choroid, inner segment of photoreceptors and retinal pigmented epithelium. Its presence in these sites suggests an adaptation to oxidative stress where this antioxidant enzyme along with other antioxidant systems serves to prevent damage.

The distribution of heterophoria within the general population is significantly non-normal and a high incidence of approximate orthophoria is observed. This observation has been named the orthophorization of heterophoria. It has been suggested that prism adaptation is the mechanism underlying orthophorization. A prolonged occlusion experiment has been used to investigate this possibility and further supports this theory.

Prior research on visual impairments has documented specific challenges that people with low vision face such as reading and mobility. Yet, much less focus has been given to the relationships between seemingly separate challenges such as mobility and social interactions; limiting the potential of services and assistive technologies for people with low vision. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 low vision participants and examined the relationships between challenges and coping strategies overarching three facets of life - functional, psychological, and social.

Monocular closure surgically performed during development by suturing the eyelids induced less hyperopia in the closed eye of light reared kittens (+0.95 Diopters) in comparison to the closed eyes of lid sutured dark reared kittens (+2.61 D). The normal control cats were also slightly hypermetropic (+0.69 D).
