[THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SYSTEM APPROACH IN THE STUDY OF THE GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME' REACTIONS].

The article discusses the problems of the process of environmental adaptations appearance which are based on the general principles of functional systems' constitution. The value of the theory of functional systems development as the basis for physiological cybernetics (P. Anokhin, 1935) is also given. A general adaptation syndrome ("a stress - syndrome") that was discovered by H. Selye is chosen as an example to explain the development of the stages of the functional system of the stress, the sequence and value of ongoing physiological reactions and negative feedback interactions. The stress

The adrenal gland in stress - Adaptation on a cellular level.

Human individuals are constantly confronted to various kinds of stressors and the body's response and adaptation is essential for human health. The adrenal gland as the main producer of stress hormones plays a major role in the response to physiological challenges and is able to adapt to these physiological needs. Proper adaptation is of particular importance since dysregulation of the stress system is the cause of various human diseases including obesity, depression, Parkinson's disease, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Therefore, it is fundamental to understand the physiological, cellular

Genomics May Be the Key to Understanding Endurance Training Pillars.

Endurance performance is primarily determined by three key physiological pillars: maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), anaerobic threshold, and economy of movement. Recent research has suggested physiological resilience as a potential fourth dimension, referring to an athlete's ability to sustain performance despite accumulating fatigue. While the role of genetic factors in endurance has been widely studied, their influence on these pillars, particularly on fatigue resistance and long-term adaptation, remains an area of growing interest. This narrative review explores the genomic basis of endurance

What is stress? Concepts, definitions and applications in seed science.

'Stresses' that impact upon seeds can affect plant reproduction and productivity, and, hence, agriculture and biodiversity. In the absence of a clear definition of plant stress, we relate concepts from physics, medicine and psychology to stresses that are specific to seeds. Potential 'eustresses' that enhance function and 'distresses' that have harmful effects are considered in relation to the seed life cycle. Taking a triphasic biomedical stress concept published in 1936, the 'General Adaptation Syndrome', to the molecular level, the 'alarm' response is defined by post-translational modificat

Maladaptation diseases as disorders of intraorganismal individuation.

The present work introduces the hypothesis that various human maladaptation diseases including addiction, cancer, autoimmunity, fibrosis, depression, chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder share a universal functional pattern in that they are caused by defects in goal state integration of physiological subsystems into whole-organism goal states and by the resulting emergence of new levels of individuality within the organism. In this framework, a general mechanism in ontogenetic maladaptation is the intraorganismal individuation of subsystems via physiological adaptation mechanisms, w

Physiological and genomic evidence that selection on the transcription factor Epas1 has altered cardiovascular function in high-altitude deer mice.

Evolutionary adaptation to extreme environments often requires coordinated changes in multiple intersecting physiological pathways, but how such multi-trait adaptation occurs remains unresolved. Transcription factors, which regulate the expression of many genes and can simultaneously alter multiple phenotypes, may be common targets of selection if the benefits of induced changes outweigh the costs of negative pleiotropic effects. We combined complimentary population genetic analyses and physiological experiments in North American deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to examine links between gene

The Stress Response Is Adaptive in a Context- and State-Dependent Manner.

A long-standing question in stress physiology is when and how the adaptive stress response can become maladaptive. In this narrative review primarily focusing on experimental studies in (male) animals, we argue that this is not merely a semantic matter but that-within limits-the organism's response to an acute or chronic stressor and the interpretation thereof as adaptive or maladaptive very much depends on the context and the circumstances under which the response is studied, including the task configuration and the state of the organism, in relation to its recent and past stress history. We

Investigating environmental heat exposure and its effects on maternal and fetal health in rural Northern Ghana (Physio-HeMAB Study): a study protocol for a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Climate change increases the frequency and intensity of heat events. Previous studies have established a correlation between heat exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, stillbirth, and other maternal and fetal health complications. However, evidence on the physiological pathways underlying heat strain during pregnancy and on whether heat adaptation strategies can modify these responses remains limited, particularly in low-resource settings. This study aims to assess the effects of environmental heat exposure on maternal and fetal physiological responses a

Nitric oxide and nitrosative stress tolerance in bacteria.

Nitric oxide is not only an obligatory intermediate in denitrification, but also a signalling and defence molecule of major importance. However, the basis of resistance to NO and RNS (reactive nitrogen species) is poorly understood in many microbes. The cellular targets of NO and RNS [e.g. metalloproteins, thiols in proteins, glutathione and Hcy (homocysteine)] may themselves serve as signal transducers, sensing NO and RNS, and resulting in altered gene expression and synthesis of protective enzymes. The properties of a number of such protective mechanisms are outlined here, including globins,

Challenges, adaptations, and biotechnological potential of oligophilic bacteria.

The majority of the prokaryotic microorganisms, especially bacteria cannot be cultivated under laboratory conditions. Irrespective of environmental samples, direct count of prokaryotes always exceeds viable count, a condition popularly coined as "Great Plate count anomaly". Our inability to culture them in isolation under laboratory conditions is due to many reasons. One possible reason could be the existence of a special group of extremophilic bacteria, such as, oligophilic bacteria, a group, that loves to grow in nutrient-deficient conditions. They are slow growing, showing unique physiologi

Physiological Evaluation of Quarter Horses Undergoing Five-Month Taming Focused on Hippotherapy.

Preparing horses for hippotherapy programs requires management approaches that prioritize animal welfare and facilitate adaptation to novel stimuli. This study monitored physiological responses during the implementation of a progressive taming protocol for Quarter Horses intended for hippotherapy. Seven animals were monitored over a five-month period, including an acclimation phase and three taming stages. Continuous heart rate, plasma cortisol concentration, and ocular infrared thermography were assessed before and after exercise. Baseline (p = 0.0466) and minimum (p = 0.0095) heart rate valu

Differential diagnosis between 'athlete's heart' and cardiomyopathies.

Physiological adaptation to exercise results in a series of electrical, structural, and functional cardiac changes, broadly named 'athlete's heart'. Symmetrical enlargement of all cardiac chambers and mild increase in wall thickness are common findings in highly trained athletes. Typical electrocardiogram (ECG) features include sinus bradycardia, first-degree atrioventricular (AV) block, isolated voltage criteria for right and left ventricular hypertrophy and early repolarisation. Cardiac remodelling may be marked in some athletes, and it may be challenging to distinguish physiological adaptat

Pediatric Cardiology as the Science of Adaptation Under Cardiovascular Constraint: Rethinking the Fundamental Unit of Analysis.

Pediatric cardiology has traditionally been organized around cardiac anatomy and physiology. Congenital and acquired cardiovascular disorders are classified according to structural and functional abnormalities, and clinical management is directed toward their identification and treatment. This approach has transformed survival and remains foundational to the discipline. As outcomes improve, however, an increasingly important question is why individuals exposed to similar cardiovascular constraints follow markedly different long-term trajectories. We propose adaptation under cardiovascular cons

Possible adaptation to strong magnetic fields.

Animal adaptation to a strong magnetic field was investigated. Mice were exposed to 30-day total-body continuous effects of a constant magnetic field (CMF) of 1.6T, and their physiological responses were assessed. Analysis of the data obtained showed that different parameters varied in a dissimilar manner. Red blood changes returned to normal in the course of the experiment. Leucocytosis and increased content of catecholamines and corticosterone of blood and adrenals persisted throughout the exposure. Changes in the spermatogenic epithelium were most distinct after the exposure. The recovery o

Plant Adaptation to Multiple Stresses during Submergence and Following Desubmergence.

Plants require water for growth and development, but excessive water negatively affects their productivity and viability. Flash floods occasionally result in complete submergence of plants in agricultural and natural ecosystems. When immersed in water, plants encounter multiple stresses including low oxygen, low light, nutrient deficiency, and high risk of infection. As floodwaters subside, submerged plants are abruptly exposed to higher oxygen concentration and greater light intensity, which can induce post-submergence injury caused by oxidative stress, high light, and dehydration. Recent stu

Adaptive control of a serial-in-parallel robotic rehabilitation device.

Robotic rehabilitation is an effective platform for sensorimotor training after neurological injuries. In this paper, an adaptive controller is developed and implemented for the RiceWrist, a serial-in-parallel robot mechanism for upper extremity robotic rehabilitation. The model-based adaptive controller implementation requires a closed form dynamic model, valid for a restricted domain of generalized coordinates. We have used an existing method to define this domain and verify that the domain is widely within the range of admissible tasks required for the considered application (movements-base
