Unilateral crosstalk cancellation via bone conduction: Methods and evaluation.

Bone conduction hearing aids (BCHAs) offer an alternative solution for individuals with outer or middle ear issues who cannot benefit from traditional air conduction hearing aids. However, the phenomenon of "crosstalk," where sound intended for one ear is mistakenly transmitted to the other ear through bone conduction, presents a challenge. This unintended transmission may limit the benefits of binaural hearing that can be achieved using two BCHAs, such as accurately detecting a sound source's direction. In this article, we present a method to suppress "crosstalk" within the human head using a

Towards robust causal inference in epidemiologic research: employing double cross-fit TMLE in right heart catheterization data.

Within epidemiologic research, estimating treatment effects from observational data presents notable challenges. Targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE) emerges as a robust method, addressing these challenges by accurately modeling treatment effects. This approach uniquely combines the precision of correctly specified models with the versatility of data-adaptive, flexible machine learning algorithms. Despite its effectiveness, TMLE's integration of complex algorithms can introduce bias and undercoverage. This issue is addressed through the double cross-fit TMLE (DC-TMLE) approach, enhanc

Adaptive Control of Lower-Limb Assistive Exoskeleton for Rehabilitation Using Deep Reinforcement Learning.

Lower-limb rehabilitation exoskeletons have the potential to improve gait recovery after stroke by providing intensive and repetitive training. However, conventional control strategies often rely on fixed control parameters and exhibit limited adaptability to patient-specific characteristics, sensor noise, and dynamic uncertainties. This paper proposes an adaptive control framework that combines deep reinforcement learning (RL) with model-based impedance control for personalised lower-limb exoskeleton assistance. Patient-specific biological parameters are incorporated into the simulation envir

Co-Adaptive Velocity and Position Control of 3-DoFs Prosthesis via Incremental Learning.

Upper-limb prosthesis control remains challenging in achieving natural and intuitive movements, especially for devices with multiple actuated degrees of freedom (DoFs), often demanding high cognitive effort. Machine learning aids in mapping phantom limb muscle patterns to prosthetic movements, but is limited by the instability of electromyographic signals over time. This study investigates two simultaneous and proportional myocontrol strategies, based on position and velocity, using incremental learning for a 3-DoFs prosthesis, allowing co-adaptation between the system and the user. Adaptive High-Order Fusion Learning for Brain Disorder Detection.

The functional brain network (FBN) serves as an important tool for investigating neurological and mental disorders. Unlike many traditional networks whose structures are often known in advance, FBNs need to be estimated from neuroimaging or electrophysiological data, and their quality generally determines the performance of downstream tasks, particularly in disorder detection. Recent studies have shown that high-order FBNs tend to achieve better discriminative performance, while some other work indicates that increasing the order of FBN does not necessarily bring additional gains in discrimina

Heat exchanger pipe orifice recognition using an improved YOLOv5 model integrated with dual attention mechanisms.

Heat exchangers are important equipment in the industrial sector, and the technology for cleaning the fouling on their densely packed tube ports is rapidly evolving towards automation, efficiency, and intelligence. To address the issues of missed detection, false detection, and repeated detection in existing visual algorithm models for tube port recognition, an improved YOLOv5 model integrating a dual attention mechanism, called DANet-YOLOv5 (Double Attention Net), is proposed. This model incorporates dual attention mechanism components into the backbone network, using second-order attention p

Improved ANFIS model for forecasting Wuhan City Air Quality and analysis COVID-19 lockdown impacts on air quality.

In this study, we propose an improved version of the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for forecasting the air quality index in Wuhan City, China. We propose a hybrid optimization method to improve ANFIS performance, called PSOSMA, using a new modified meta-heuristics (MH) algorithm, Slime mould algorithm (SMA), which is improved by using the particle swarm optimizer (PSO). The proposed PSOSMA-ANFIS has been trained with air quality index time series data of three years and has been applied to forecast the fine particulate matter (PM2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2),

Fast and automatic algorithm for optic disc extraction in retinal images using principle-component-analysis-based preprocessing and curvelet transform.

Optic disc or optic nerve (ON) head extraction in retinal images has widespread applications in retinal disease diagnosis and human identification in biometric systems. This paper introduces a fast and automatic algorithm for detecting and extracting the ON region accurately from the retinal images without the use of the blood-vessel information. In this algorithm, to compensate for the destructive changes of the illumination and also enhance the contrast of the retinal images, we estimate the illumination of background and apply an adaptive correction function on the curvelet transform coeffi

Use of independent component analysis for reducing CPR artefacts in human emergency ECGs.

AIM: We applied independent component analysis (ICA) to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)-corrupted human multichannel emergency ECGs with the aim of reconstructing the original ECGs. MATERIALS: Two ICA algorithms (EFICA and JADE) were selected. Data for ICA were acquired by simultaneously recording eight ECG channels during CPR on a porcine model. The algorithms' reconstruction performance was assessed by the Spearman correlation coefficient (SCC) and the shock advice algorithm of an AED. We then compared the performance of EFICA with the established second-channel adaptive matching pursui

GMAMDA: Predicting Metabolite-Disease Associations Based on Adaptive Hardness Negative Sampling and Adaptive Graph Multiple Convolution.

Metabolites are small molecules produced during organism metabolism, with their abnormal concentrations closely linked to the onset and progression of various diseases. Accurate prediction of metabolite-disease associations is crucial for early diagnosis, mechanistic exploration, and treatment optimization. However, existing algorithms often overlook the integration of node features and neglect the impact of different hop domains on nodes in the processing of heterogeneous graphs. Furthermore, current methods solely rely on random sampling for selecting negative samples without considering the

Respiratory chain senescence and its relation to physical activity.

This article is a scientific review on the effects of senescence of the respiratory chain and it aims to provide an overview of what role exercise has on the way the aging of the respiratory chain occurs. There are several reasons that explain the lack of exercise in senescent, less need, less interest, different goals, and also deficiencies that make these decisions strongest, as mild equilibrium, coordination, strength, or vision abnormalities. The use of the whole respiratory chain from the mithocondria to the the lungs, its solicitation through exercise and a proper nutrition are basic to

Regularized RKHS-Based Subspace Learning for Motor Imagery Classification.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology allows people with disabilities to communicate with the physical environment. One of the most promising signals is the non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. However, due to the non-stationary nature of EEGs, a subject's signal may change over time, which poses a challenge for models that work across time. Recently, domain adaptive learning (DAL) has shown its superior performance in various classification tasks. In this paper, we propose a regularized reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) subspace learning algorithm with K-nearest neighbors

Investigation of the Medical Image Modalities to Detect the Abnormalities in the Spinal Cord Using Thresholding Techniques.

Accurately segmenting spinal structures from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for diagnosing degenerative disc diseases. However, 1.5 T low-field MRI often suffers from high noise and low contrast, complicating the segmentation process. This study provides a systematic comparative evaluation of four thresholding-based techniques: binary/global, Otsu, adaptive, and standard deviation-based methods. Using a dataset of spinal DICOM images, we analyzed the effectiveness of these algorithms in delineating bone and soft tissue boundaries. The performance was quantitatively validated usi
