Sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare seromucosal gland tumor, accounting for 7.5% of sinonasal cavity cancers. It is a distinct entity, with slow progression, strong perineural tropism and high risk of late recurrence. Since the time of the 2009 French guidelines, large multicenter studies have been reported, enabling more precise clinical, pathologic and therapeutic analysis. To update the previous guidelines, a systematic review was performed, using PRISMA guidelines and the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases for the period 2009-2020. BACKGROUND: Primary malignant tumors of the trachea are extremely rare, representing only 0.2% of all respiratory tract tumors. Among them, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the second most frequent histological type. Due to its slow growth and misleading symptoms, diagnosis is often delayed.
CASE: We report the case of a 42-year-old male, chronic smoker, who presented with progressive dyspnea and mild hemoptysis. Chest CT revealed a 32-mm expansive lesion of the cervical trachea causing 80% stenosis. Bronchoscopy confirmed an intratracheal mass, and biopsy established the diagnosis of trache

Introduction Adenoidectomy is one of the most common procedures performed by otolaryngologists. Traditional adenoid curettage is performed blindly, which can result in inadequate removal of the adenoid and injury to the surrounding structures. Objective To perform transnasal endoscopic examinations to assess the nasopharynx after conventional curettage adenoidectomy. Methods The present prospective study included 100 children with a mean age of 4.2 ± 3.07 years. It is composed of two steps: conventional curettage adenoidectomy by a resident trainee; and endoscopic evaluation of the nasophar

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the vulva represents a highly uncommon type of female malignancy. Due to the absence of specific treatment guidelines, such cases are typically managed by the treatment protocols for vulvar cancer. Here, we report the case of a 52-year-old woman who presented with a painful right vulvar mass, leading to a diagnosis of ACC of the vulva after biopsy and immunohistochemical analysis. She underwent vulvectomy, bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy, and targeted radiotherapy, and no evidence of recurrence has been found for three years, with ongoing monitoring for pos

A 31-year-old woman presented with intermittent otalgia in the right ear, reporting severe pain during flights. The patient denied performing habitual Valsalva maneuvers. Otoendoscopic examination revealed hyperectatic herniation of the posterior portion of the right tympanic membrane (TM). Nasopharyngoscopy showed adenoid vegetation, and tympanometry demonstrated an abnormally high peak, indicating a thinned TM. The temporal bone CT was unremarkable, but a CT of the paranasal sinuses revealed a mild homogeneous lesion in the nasopharynx. The patient underwent adenoidectomy and right ventilati

A 41-year-old male presented to the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, with shortness of breath for 1 year. Though on treatment for bronchial asthma, he was not responding. The chest radiograph was normal (Fig. 1). On spirometric examination, the flow-volume curve showed flattening of the expiratory limb, suggesting variable intrathoracic obstruction. Fiber-optic bronchoscopy was, hence, done and it revealed a growth in the trachea (Fig. 2). Biopsy was deferred due to the risk of bleeding. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest also showed tracheal growth (Fig. 3). The patient was planned for ri

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is primarily a salivary gland tumour that rarely involves the respiratory tract. A 58-year-old lady was admitted with worsening dyspnoea, cough and wheezing for 2 days. CT pulmonary angiogram was done due to persistent dyspnoea which revealed a 12 mm mass protruding into the posterior aspect of the trachea with multiple enlarged nodes. There was a complete collapse of the left lower lobe and right middle lobe with right upper lobe pulmonary embolism which was thought to be contributing to her hypoxia. She was struggling with secretion clearance and initial measur

This study aims to investigate the association between adenoid hypertrophy and facial development. A total of 388 children aged 1-13 years old who had undergone head MRI in Foshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital were collected, including 196 hypertrophic cases and 192 normal cases. The maxillofacial soft tissue indicators were measured and compared. The A/N ratio and adenoid thickness consistently increased with age in the hypertrophic group and the A/N ratio reached a maximum value three years earlier than the normal group. The pharyngeal airway space, vallecula of epiglottis to anterior p

A first step for microorganisms to reach the respiratory system and cause infectious disease is colonization in the nasopharynx. Humans inhale a bacterial load of up to 106 per cubic meter of air per day [1], including transient microorganisms between the upper and lower airways. This can lead to lung infections, amounting to billions of dollars in annual direct treatment costs in the United States, depending on the etiologic agent [2,3]. Curcumin has been described as a photosensitizer (PS) that, activated at 450 nm, is efficient against planktonic bacteria [4] and biofilms [5]. At the same t

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is amongst the most common pediatric diseases and the most common cause of hearing loss in children. It is accepted that adenoid hypertrophy (AH) is related to OME incidence. Better understanding of the correlation between the relative size of AH and the incidence of persistent OME may provide evidence to support a more standardized approach to the diagnosis and treatment of OME. A retrospective study carried out between April 2016 and April 2018 collected data on 65 children aged 2-12 years, diagnosed with chronic OME and symptoms of AH, where conservative the

High rates of recurrence and distant metastasis are a foremost challenge in the management of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), occurring in approximately 40% of all ACC patients. Despite the morbidity and mortality resulting from recurrent/metastatic (R/M) disease, there are no FDA-approved systemic agents for these patients. In this review, we summarize pertinent ACC pathophysiology and its implications for different systemic treatment regimens in R/M ACC. We review the evidence for the most widely used systemic agents - cytotoxic chemotherapy and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) targeting VE

Spiradenoma is a benign cutaneous adnexal neoplasm that characteristically presents as a painful dermal nodule, often on the head or trunk. It has a distinct histologic phenotype and management involves surgical excision with low risk of recurrence. In comparison, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignancy manifesting as an often painless subcutaneous mass with potential for local invasion, perineural extension, and high rates of recurrence after excision. We report the case of a 63-year-old male patient with a recurrent, painful hematoma-like cyst overlying the left lower extrem

A heterogeneous group of CNS tumors are characterized by mixed neuroepithelial and mesenchymal features. Glial tumors manifesting this phenomenon are referred to as gliosarcoma. These tumors are usually mistaken for cerebral metastases or meningioma at operation. Their histological studies have revealed an admixture of gliomatous and sarcomatous tissues, which leads to a biphasic pattern. The mesenchymal component can present in different forms such as fibrosarcoma, undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, chondro-osteogenic, and myogenic differentiation, as well as angiosarcomatous and liposarco

Adenoid tissue are the major constituent of Waldeyer's ring which are physiologically natural defense mechanism of the body against inhaled allergens and microorganisms. In all children, the volume of the adenoid increases with age with a maximal volume in the age group of 5-6 years, followed by a gradual decrease in volume by the age of 8-9 years.Allergic rhinitis is a non-infectious chronic inflammatory disease of nasal mucosa mediated by immunoglobulin E and involved by a variety of immunocompetent cells (T, B lymphocytes, mast cells, etc.) after atopic individual contact with allergens.Aden

Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) are malignant tumors that most often occur in the salivary glands and bronchi, with occurrence in the breast being rare. ACCs of the breast reportedly give rise to few lymph node metastases or distant metastases and have a favorable prognosis. A 56-year-old woman with a left breast mass identified by mammographic screening was examined at our institute. Breast ultrasound revealed a sharply marginated, hypoechoic mass 12.7 × 9.4 × 8.7 mm in size in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast, and a vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) was performed at the mass site.
