Growth and development issues in adolescents with ostomies: a primer for the WOC nurses.

Caring for the adolescent (13-18 years of age) with an ostomy presents multiple challenges. The purpose of this article is to provide strategies to assist the WOC nurse in minimizing the potential impact on growth and development for this age group with an ostomy. This is relevant to the WOC nurse since it is estimated that between 6% and 14% of all adolescents have symptoms of irritable bowel disease, and many will require an ostomy. Thus the WOC nurse will be called upon to provide care to this age group. This article discusses normal adolescent growth and development and provides strategies

Adolescents' use of maternal and child health services in developing countries.

CONTEXT: Because of high levels of early childbearing in developing countries, pregnancy and childbirth are the leading causes of death among women aged 15-19. Use of skilled antenatal and delivery care improves maternal outcomes through the prevention, management and treatment of obstetric complications, and infant immunizations prevent many childhood diseases. METHODS: Logistic regression analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data for 15 developing countries examined adolescents' use of antenatal care, delivery care and infant immunization services compared with use by older women. The stressful life events schedule for children and adolescents: development and validation.

The development and psychometric properties of the Stressful Life Events Schedule (SLES), an interview instrument to assess stressors in children and adolescents, are described. Children (< or =12 years) and adolescents (>12 years) with psychopathology (n=30) and non-psychiatric controls (n=30) were interviewed with the SLES about the occurrence of stressful life events during the prior year. To examine concurrent validity of the SLES, all subjects also completed the self-report Life Events Checklist (LEC) and half the sample completed the Life Events and Difficulties Schedule (LEDS). To exami

Lung and thorax development during adolescence: relationship with pubertal status.

The aim of the present study was to define reference values for lung volumes and the lung transfer factor for carbon monoxide (TL,CO) for an adolescent population using thoracic volume index (TVI) and an index of pubertal stage in order to account for the variation in growth pattern between adolescents. TVI, pubertal stage by Tanner scale (PST), time since menarche, functional residual capacity measured using the helium-dilution technique, vital capacity, total lung capacity and TL,CO measured using a steady-state method were determined in 51 males (aged 13-20 yrs; PST T3-T5) and 52 females (a

Case of XXXXY syndrome. Development throughout adolescence and endocrine aspects.

49,XXXXY syndrome is a very rare condition that is associated with a considerable more severe phenotype than classic 47,XXY Klinefelter syndrome. We present a patient with 49,XXXXY syndrome, who was first presented to an endocrinological unit at the age of 12.5 years with prepubertal genitalia. He was then lost from follow-up and showed clear clinical and biochemical signs of hypergonadotropic hypogonadism when presenting again at the age of 16 years. The patient was started on testosterone replacement therapy. This case is reported to underline the need for thorough endocrinological follow-up

Sex-role attributes, perceived competence and the development of depression in adolescence.

Studies are described which investigated the relationship of sex-role traits to age trends and sex differences in depression in adolescents. Psychological masculinity was negatively related to the level of depression in males and females, and evidence which indicates that this relationship is mediated by a link between masculinity and perceived competence is presented. The level of masculinity was stable across the age ranges studied, but was related to an increasingly higher rate of depression in females than males. It is therefore argued that a sex difference in masculinity arises prior to a

The PREvention Program for Adolescent Relationship and Emotional Development (PREPARED): a proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: The bi-directional link between mental health problems and intimate partner violence (IPV) is well established, yet there is a lack of prevention approaches directly targeting both during adolescence. This study conducted a mixed-methods pilot evaluation of the Prevention Program for Adolescent Relationship and Emotional Development (PREPARED), a weekly, six-session, non-specialist delivered, prevention program to promote mental health and prevent IPV. This proof-of-concept study tested implementation outcomes and measured mental health and relationship attitude and behavior change

Does Substance Abuse Predict the Development of Mental Health Disorders in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients?

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether substance abuse among adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients is associated with increased odds of subsequent new-onset mental health disease (MHD). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: MHD prevalence in patients with a substance abuse history has been well-described. However, the impact of current or historical substance abuse/dependence in AIS patients on the risk of subsequent development of new-onset MHDs is unknown. METHODS: The New York SPARCS database was reviewed to identify all 10-25-year-old

Impact of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) exposure on reproductive development in adolescent offspring.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are known to disrupt neuroendocrine functions and impaired perinatal growth and reproductive health. However, the long-term reproductive toxicity of PBDEs following perinatal exposure remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of perinatal exposure to 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) on reproductive development in adolescent offspring. Female C57BL/6 J mice were exposed to BDE-47 at doses of 0 (control), 10, and 50 mg/kg during the perinatal period (gestational day 13.5 to postnatal day 7). Subsequently, gonadal tissues and

Beyond delinquency and drug use: Links of peer pressure to long-term adolescent psychosocial development.

This study examined the predictors and sequelae of exposure to peer pressure from close friends in adolescence. Adolescents (99 female; 85 male) were followed from age 13 to 24 utilizing peer, parent, and romantic partner reports and observational data. Participants who were exposed to high levels of peer pressure as teens were more likely to experience higher levels of coercive behavior from romantic partners (as reported by those partners), as well as lower levels of parent-reported functional independence. All findings held even after accounting for baseline levels of teen assertiveness. Ad

Scoliocorrector Fatma-UI for correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: Development, effectivity, safety and functional outcome.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis remains a major problem due to its high incidence, high risk, and high cost. One of the aims of the management in scoliosis is to correct the deformity. Many techniques are available to correct scoliosis deformity; however, they are all far from ideal to achieve three-dimensional correction in scoliosis. AIM: To develop a set of tools named Scoliocorrector Fatma-UI (SCFUI) to aid three-dimensional correction and to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and functional outcome. METHODS: This study consists of two stages. In the first stage, we developed the

Prevalence and correlates of concussion in children: Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

INTRODUCTION: Concussions are one of the most common causes for emergency room use in the United States (US) among youth and adolescents; however, prevalence data on concussion in this population are inconsistent. A growing body of literature has explored associations of a range of variables with pediatric concussion, but they have not been explored simultaneously in a well-powered sample in the US. The present study aimed to present lifetime concussion prevalence, evaluate demographic, psychological, and cognitive correlates of concussion, and assess for differences across these variables bas
