Use of 21-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Among U.S. Adults: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices - United States, 2024.

On June 17, 2024, the Food and Drug Administration approved 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) (PCV21; CAPVAXIVE; Merck Sharp & Dohme, LLC) for adults aged ≥18 years. PCV21 does not contain certain serotypes that are included in other licensed pneumococcal vaccines but adds eight new serotypes. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends use of a PCV for all adults aged ≥65 years, as well as adults aged 19-64 years with certain risk conditions for pneumococcal disease if they have not received a PCV or whose vaccination history is unknown. Previously, options

Use of a Modified Preexposure Prophylaxis Vaccination Schedule to Prevent Human Rabies: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices - United States, 2022.

Human rabies is an acute, progressive encephalomyelitis that is nearly always fatal once symptoms begin. Several measures have been implemented to prevent human rabies in the United States, including vaccination of targeted domesticated and wild animals, avoidance of behaviors that might precipitate an exposure (e.g., provoking high-risk animals), awareness of the types of animal contact that require postexposure prophylaxis (PEP), and use of proper personal protective equipment when handling animals or laboratory specimens. PEP is widely available in the United States and highly effective if

Recommendations for use of a booster dose of inactivated vero cell culture-derived Japanese encephalitis vaccine: advisory committee on immunization practices, 2011.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus, a mosquito-borne flavivirus, is an important cause of encephalitis in Asia with a case fatality rate of 20%--30% and neurologic or psychiatric sequelae in 30%--50% of survivors (1). Travelers to JE-endemic countries and laboratory personnel who work with infectious JE virus are at potential risk for JE virus infection. In 2010, CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) updated recommendations for prevention of JE. The updated recommendations included information on use of a new inactivated, Vero cell culture--derived JE vaccine (JE-VC [manufact

Advice on the response from public and environmental health to the detection of cryptosporidial oocysts in treated drinking water. PHLS Advisory Committee on Water and the Environment.

New water quality regulations in the United Kingdom (UK) will lead to the regular sampling of water supplies for the presence of cryptosporidial oocysts. It is likely therefore that consultants in communicable disease control (CCDCs) and environmental health officers (EHOs) will be informed of the presence of oocysts in water supplies rather more often. These guidelines were developed, by an ad hoc working group of the PHLS Advisory Committee on Water and the Environment, to help CCDCs and EHOs respond to such reports. The implications for public health of oocysts in treated water supplies is

Mortality in Canadian children with growth hormone (GH) deficiency receiving GH therapy 1967-1992. The Canadian Growth Hormone Advisory Committee.

The objective of this study was to determine the risk of death and potential for prevention of mortality in a large population of children with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). The Canadian GH Advisory Committee registry was initiated in 1967 to include all persons in Canada treated with pituitary-derived GH (1967-1985). Since 1985, the registry has been maintained for continuous surveillance of those treated with biosynthetic GH. Thirty-seven children have died out of a total of 1366 children treated for GHD in the 25 years up to December 31, 1992. Individual cases were reviewed for circumsta

Suggested guidelines for rating cardiac disability in workers' compensation. Medical and Chiropractic Advisory Committee to the Administrative Director of the California Division of Industrial Accidents.

Cardiac disability ratings in workers' compensation cases currently lack any consistent scientific basis, with varying medical evidence used by different examiners in the same case. Opinions about the extent of disability may differ with the same patient, delaying resolution and the delivery of benefits. We describe guidelines for determining cardiac impairment and suggest a schedule for rating disability based on evidence. Our experience is in California, but arriving at equitable ratings for disability purposes is a nationwide challenge. Exercise stress testing provides the best reproducible

Recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices for Use of a Third Dose of Mumps Virus-Containing Vaccine in Persons at Increased Risk for Mumps During an Outbreak.

A substantial increase in the number of mumps outbreaks and outbreak-associated cases has occurred in the United States since late 2015 (1,2). To address this public health problem, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) reviewed the available evidence and determined that a third dose of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and effective at preventing mumps. During its October 2017 meeting, ACIP recommended a third dose of a mumps virus-containing vaccine* for persons previously vaccinated with 2 doses who are identified by public health authorities as being part of a

Report from the World Health Organization's third Product Development for Vaccines Advisory Committee (PDVAC) meeting, Geneva, 8-10th June 2016.

The third meeting of WHO's Product Development for Vaccines Advisory Committee (PDVAC) was held in June 2016, with a remit to revisit the pathogen areas for which significant progress has occurred since recommendations from the 2015 meeting, as well as to consider new advances in the development of vaccines against other pathogens. Since the previous meeting, significant progress has been made with regulatory approvals of the first malaria and dengue vaccines, and the first phase III trials of a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine candidate has started in the elderly and pregnant women.

Canadian Cardiovascular Society and National Advisory Committee on Blood and Blood Products Joint Statement on Blood Utilization and Transfusion for Patients With Acute Coronary Syndromes.

Although the evidence base broadly recommends a restrictive red blood cell (RBC) transfusion strategy for anemic patients, its appropriateness for patients with anemia and acute coronary syndromes is not definitive. The publication of the MINT trial has challenged the value of a restrictive transfusion strategy; our panel sought to provide an overview of the evidence and a data-informed expert opinion on the best practices for these patients. Four primary trials, including REALITY and MINT, individually showed no significant differences in their primary outcomes. However, published meta-analys

Renal cell carcinoma suspected at time of organ donation 2008-2016: A report of the OPTN ad hoc Disease Transmission Advisory Committee Registry.

All 179 reports to the OPTN of potential renal cell carcinoma (RCC) transmission from 1/1/2008 through 12/31/2016 were reviewed. Cases were divided into those with donor tumor known or suspected at time of transplant (N = 147 donors), and those in which tumor was initially found after transplant (N = 32). We sought to understand the risk of transplanting either the affected kidney, the contralateral kidney or non-renal organs from donors with a suspected/confirmed unilateral RCC. In the case of RCC found prior to transplant, transplantation of 21 kidneys following excision of tumor, 47 contral

Rotavirus vaccination coverage and adherence to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)-recommended vaccination schedule--United States, February 2006-May 2007.

Worldwide, rotavirus is the leading cause of severe gastroenteritis in children aged <5 years. In February 2006, a new human-bovine rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq (Merck & Co., Inc., Whitehouse Station, New Jersey), was recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for routine vaccination of U.S. infants. Three doses of RotaTeq are recommended at ages 2, 4, and 6 months. The first dose should be administered between ages 6 and 12 weeks, and vaccination should not be initiated for infants aged >12 weeks. Subsequent doses should be administered at 4-10 week intervals, with a
