Effectiveness of Adjunctive Use of Low-Level Laser Therapy and Photodynamic Therapy After Scaling and Root Planing in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis.

The aim of this split-mouth, randomized controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in treatment of chronic periodontitis. Each quadrant was categorized into control group (SRP alone; two quadrants per patient), test group 1 (SRP + PDT), and test group 2 (SRP + LLLT. The test groups showed significantly higher reductions in Gingival Index, probing depth, and clinical attachment level as well as reductions in Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomita

Nonsyndromic localized aggressive periodontitis of primary dentition: A rare case report.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the gingiva and tissues of the periodontium. It is characterized by pocket formation and destruction of supporting alveolar bone. Periodontal diseases of aggressive nature are not very common in children. They are usually associated with systemic conditions. The present case report is of a 5-year-old male child who reported with rapid attachment loss and bony defects of the gingiva and supporting structures. His family and medical history gave no contribution for the diagnosis. Blood investigations did not reveal any abnormality. The microbial examin

Variations in the oral microbiome and metabolome of methamphetamine users.

Drug addiction can seriously damage human physical and mental health, while detoxification is a long and difficult process. Although studies have reported changes in the oral microbiome of methamphetamine (METH) users, the role that the microbiome plays in the process of drug addiction is still unknown. This study aims to explore the function of the microbiome based on analysis of the variations in the oral microbiome and metabolome of METH users. We performed the 16S rRNA sequencing analysis based on the oral saliva samples collected from 278 METH users and 105 healthy controls (CTL). In addi

[Filifactor alocis and its role in the etiology of chronic periodontitis].

The review is devoted to the analysis of modern ideas about the role of bacteria Filifactor alocis in the etiology of chronic periodontitis. The study of these bacteria, discovered in 1985, is complicated by the difficulty of their detection with cultural methods. According to modern researches, the bacteria F.alocis with good reason can be included in the red complex of periodontal pathogens as the most important pathogens of chronic periodontitis. F.alocis is a synergist of such a key pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, as well as a frequent satellite of Fusobacterium nucleatum and, somewhat

A review of localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP): Part I. Clinical features, epidemiology, etiology, and pathogenesis.

Localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) is not commonly encountered in dental practice. Yet, when it is encountered, prompt and effective therapy is required to combat the severity of disease and its rapid progression. Failure to understand its diagnosis and etiology leads to failures in management of LJP. The clinical features, etiology, and pathogenesis of LJP are reviewed to provide the clinician with a sufficient understanding to appropriately manage or refer LJP patients.

Pilot Study of Oral Microbiome and Psychoneurological Symptom Cluster in Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Women with breast cancer experience high symptom burden from a psychoneurological symptom cluster consisting of fatigue, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and pain. Interventions to manage this symptom cluster are limited as its etiology is not well understood. One system that has been linked with this symptom cluster in both healthy and other chronically ill populations but has not been explored in breast cancer is the oral microbiome. OBJECTIVE: We examined differences in oral microbiome diversity and composition between women with breast cancer who reported high versus l

Periodontal conditions and salivary microbiota are potential indicators to distinguish silicosis: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Silicosis has always been a serious global occupational health problem. Oral microbiota plays important roles in the development of lung disease. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between periodontal conditions, oral bacteria and silicosis disease. METHOD: A single-center and cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 in Sichuan Province, China, including a small sample of silicosis patient group and healthy control group. Demographic data and periodontal examinations measured by clinical attachment loss (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP) and periodontal pocke

Unculturable and culturable periodontal-related bacteria are associated with periodontal inflammation during pregnancy and with preterm low birth weight delivery.

Recent studies revealed culturable periodontal keystone pathogens are associated with preterm low birth weight (PLBW). However, the oral microbiome is also comprised of hundreds of 'culture-difficult' or 'not-yet-culturable' bacterial species. To explore the potential role of unculturable and culturable periodontitis-related bacteria in preterm low birth weight (PLBW) delivery, we recruited 90 pregnant women in this prospective study. Periodontal parameters, including pocket probing depth, bleeding on probing, and clinical attachment level were recorded during the second trimester and followin

Improved mechanism of the bioactive compounds isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum TWK10-fermented soymilk in periodontal disease.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) possess immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, making them promising for oral health applications. This study investigated the antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities of TWK10-fermented soymilk extract (TWK10FSEE) against Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). TWK10FSEE disrupted the cell membrane integrity, altered membrane permeability, and inhibited the growth of these periodontal pathogens. In a drip-flow biofilm reactor simulating the oral environment, TWK10FSEE regulated biofilm-related gene express

Synthesis of new carolacton derivatives and their activity against biofilms of oral bacteria.

Carolacton, a secondary metabolite isolated from the extracts of Sorangium cellulosum, causes membrane damage and cell death in biofilms of the caries- and endocarditis-associated bacterium Streptococcus mutans. Here, we report the total synthesis of several derivatives of carolacton. All new structural modifications introduced abolished its biological activity, including subtle ones, such as inversion of configuration at C9. However, a bicyclic bislactone derivative as well as the methyl ester of carolacton resulted in compounds with prodrug properties. Their inhibitory activity on S. mutans

Linking periodontal pathogens with endoperio lesions.

Endodontic-periodontal diseases pose difficulties for the practitioner in diagnosing and predicting the success of the affected teeth. Therefore, it is of interest to correlate between periodontal infections and endodontic periodontal disorders. 50 patients of both sexes were included in this study. 28 of the 50 patients were men and 22 were women. Participants with a history of endodontic and periodontal lesions on the same tooth were chosen. A polymerase chain reaction experiment was carried out and relationships were formed. Data shows that isolates of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibac

An update on possible alternative therapeutics for future periodontal disease management.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by microbial infections of the gum. At an advanced stage, periodontitis can even destroy the alveolar bone. Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Capnocytophaga gingivalis, and Pr. nigrescens are the major pathogens in periodontitis. Scaling and root planning are used together with local or systemic antibiotics to treat periodontitis. The difficulty in complete eradication of periodontal pathogens frequently leads to the relapse of the disease. As not many new antibiotics

Mechanisms underlying the association between periodontitis and atherosclerotic disease.

Atherosclerosis is central to the pathology of cardiovascular diseases, a group of diseases in which arteries become occluded with atheromas that may rupture, leading to different cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction or ischemic stroke. There is a large body of epidemiologic and animal model evidence associating periodontitis with atherosclerotic disease, and many potential mechanisms linking these diseases have been elucidated. This chapter will update knowledge on these mechanisms, which generally fall into 2 categories: microbial invasion and infection of atheromas; and infl

Herpesvirus-bacteria synergistic interaction in periodontitis.

The etiopathogenesis of severe periodontitis includes herpesvirus-bacteria coinfection. This article evaluates the pathogenicity of herpesviruses (cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus) and periodontopathic bacteria (Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis) and coinfection of these infectious agents in the initiation and progression of periodontitis. Cytomegalovirus and A. actinomycetemcomitans/P. gingivalis exercise synergistic pathogenicity in the development of localized ("aggressive") juvenile periodontitis. Cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus are associated

[Dissertations 25 years after date 37. Susceptibility to periodontal diseases].

In the eighties of the former century it was observed that individuals had different modes of development of periodontitis, largely for unknown reasons. It was assumed that periodontal disease developed as a result of the presence of virulent micro-organisms in combination with an inadequate host response. The concept of this (im)balance in host parasite interactions developed further, in part because of new research techniques. With respect to oral bacteria it was shown that periodontal pathogens like Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia are

Beyond the specific plaque hypothesis: are highly leukotoxic strains of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans a paradigm for periodontal pathogenesis?

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a facultative anaerobe implicated in a variety of periodontal diseases. Its presence is most closely associated with localized juvenile periodontitis (LIP), although the exact role of the organism in this and other periodontal diseases is not entirely clear. While A. actinomycetemcomitans produces several different putative virulence factors, the most widely studied is the leukotoxin. The leukotoxin selectively kills polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages in vitro, constituting the host's first line of defense. Interestingly, even though all strain
