Neuroendocrine biomarkers, social relations, and the cumulative costs of stress in Taiwan.

Allostatic load (AL) is thought to represent the physiological toll that builds up over the life course as a consequence of the body's response to stress. An important aim of this paper is to test this widely held-but little investigated-understanding of what AL represents. More specifically, using the Social Environment and Biomarkers of Aging Study (SEBAS), a nationally representative survey of Taiwan conducted in year 2000, this paper scrutinizes the connection between stressful life histories and neuroendocrine allostatic load (NAL). Stressful life histories are operationalized through the

Allostatic load, a measure of chronic physiological stress, is associated with pregnancy outcomes, but not fertility, among women with unexplained infertility.

STUDY QUESTION: Among infertile women undergoing ovarian stimulation, is allostatic load (AL), a measure of chronic physiological stress, associated with subsequent fertility and pregnancy outcomes? SUMMARY ANSWER: AL at baseline was not associated with conception, spontaneous abortion or live birth, however, it was significantly associated with increased odds of pre-eclampsia and preterm birth among women who had a live birth in the study. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Several studies have linked AL during pregnancy to adverse outcomes including preterm birth and pre-eclampsia, hypothesizing that

Mental disorders and metabolic syndrome: a fatamorgana or warning reality?

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing interest in the effect that comorbid mental and somatic disorders may have on each other. Metabolic syndrome is an important risk factor for the development of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and premature mortality. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between various mental disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders) and metabolic syndrome and discuss the possible pathophysiologic mechanisms that may link specific mental disorders and metabolic sy

Wrist-worn accelerometer measured sleep fragmentation and obesity risk: Socioeconomic gradients and mediation by allostatic load.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep fragmentation is a recognized risk factor for obesity, yet whether socioeconomic status moderates this association and whether chronic stress responses mediate it remain unclear. METHODS: We analyzed 3007 U.S. adults (≥18 years) from NHANES 2013-2014 with valid wrist-worn accelerometer data, representing approximately 132.7 million adults nationwide. Sleep fragmentation was quantified as wake minutes per hour (WASO/h) and awakenings per hour (AWAKE/h) using a Hidden Markov Model. Outcomes were general obesity (Body Mass Index, BMI) and central obesity (Body Roundness Index,

Does adult attachment style mediate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and mental and physical health outcomes?

Attachment theory has been proposed as one explanation for the relationship between childhood maltreatment and problematic mental and physical health outcomes in adulthood. This study seeks to determine whether: (1) childhood physical abuse and neglect lead to different attachment styles in adulthood, (2) adult attachment styles predict subsequent mental and physical health outcomes, and (3) adult attachment styles mediate the relationship between childhood physical abuse and neglect and mental and physical health outcomes. Children with documented cases of physical abuse and neglect (ages 0-1

Association between breast cancer and allostatic load by race: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2008.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer and its treatment introduce numerous physiologic, psychological, social, and economic stressors to a woman with the diagnosis. Allostatic load, a composite score of biomarkers representing physiologic dysregulation, may serve as a measure of the biological burden of breast cancer. This study investigates the association between breast cancer and allostatic load scores by comparing allostatic load scores in those with a history of breast cancer to those without, stratified by race. METHODS: Black and white women aged 35 to 85 were analyzed using the data from NHANES 1

Associations between sedentary behavior and allostatic load: The 1970 British Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic/repeated exposure to psychological stressors can induce high allostatic load (AL), or multisystem physiological dysregulation, which increases cardiometabolic disease (CMD) risk. While moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is inversely related to AL, associations with sedentary behavior (SB) remain unclear. This study tested associations between multiple activPAL-derived SB metrics-total SB, SB breaks, and SB bout duration-and AL among middle-aged adults. METHODS: Participants (n = 8581; 46.8 ± 0.7 years; 52% female) represented the 1970 British Cohort Study (2016-

Allostatic load and cardiometabolic health in a young adult South African population: the African-PREDICT study.

Sustained stress, assessed as a high allostatic load score (ALS), is an independent cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor in older adults but its associations in young people are undefined. Since neurological maturation impacts stress adaptation and CVD risk, we assessed the relationship of ALS with CVD profile by using a tiered approach stratified by age [emerging adults (EA) aged 20-24 yr vs. young adults (YA) aged 25-30 yr] and ALS (high vs. low). In 1,054 healthy participants of the African Prospective Study on Early Detection and Identification of Cardiovascular Disease and Hypertensio

A potential role for allostatic load in preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is a multisystemic disorder of pregnancy associated with maternal and fetal complications as well as later-life cardiovascular disease. Its exact cause is not known. We developed a pregnancy-specific multisystem index score of physiologic risk and chronic stress, allostatic load (AL), early in pregnancy. Our objective was to determine whether AL measured early in pregnancy was associated with increased odds of developing preeclampsia. Data were from a single-center, prospectively collected database in a 1:2 individual-matched case control of women enrolled at <15 weeks gestation.

Exploring the consequences of mitochondrial differences arising through hybridization of sunfish.

Previous studies have shown evidence of genomic incompatibility and mitochondrial enzyme dysfunction in hybrids of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque) and pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus Linnaeus) sunfish (Davies et al., 2012 Physiol. Biochem. Zool. 85, 321-331). We assessed if these differences in mitochondria had an impact on metabolic processes that depend on mitochondrial function, specifically hypoxia tolerance and recovery from burst exercise. Bluegill, pumpkinseed, and their hybrids showed no difference in the critical oxygen tension (Pcrit) and no differences in tissue metabolites

Environmental risk factors for Toxoplasma gondii infections and the impact of latent infections on allostatic load in residents of Central North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii infection can be acquired through ingestion of infectious tissue cysts in undercooked meat or environmental oocysts excreted by cats. This cross-sectional study assessed environmental risk factors for T. gondii infections and an association between latent infections and a measure of physiologic dysregulation known as allostatic load. METHODS: Serum samples from 206 adults in the Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina area were tested for immunoglobulin (IgG) responses to T. gondii using commercial ELISA kits. Allostatic load was estimated as a sum of 15 serum biomark

The Relationship between Allostatic Load and Psychosocial Characteristics among Women Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Allostatic load (AL) is a novel perspective for examining the damaging effects of stress on health and disease. Women veterans represent an understudied yet vulnerable subgroup of women with increased reports of traumatic stressors across their lifespan. AL has not been examined in this group. This study hypothesized that reports of sexual assault in childhood, civilian life, or in the military by women veterans was associated with AL and selected psychosocial measures. We also hypothesized that AL scores are positively associated with psychosocial characteristics. METHODS: Using

Role of microRNAs in islet beta-cell compensation and failure during diabetes.

Pancreatic beta-cell function and mass are markedly adaptive to compensate for the changes in insulin requirement observed during several situations such as pregnancy, obesity, glucocorticoids excess, or administration. This requires a beta-cell compensation which is achieved through a gain of beta-cell mass and function. Elucidating the physiological mechanisms that promote functional beta-cell mass expansion and that protect cells against death, is a key therapeutic target for diabetes. In this respect, several recent studies have emphasized the instrumental role of microRNAs in the control

The corticotropin releasing factor system in the liver: expression, actions and possible implications in hepatic physiology and pathology.

The corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) system plays a crucial regulatory role in the adaptation to exogenous and endogenous stress stimuli, as well as homeostasis. Apart from the central nervous system (CNS), the members of this neuropeptide family extend their actions in the periphery, where they may affect various body systems independently, stimulating peripheral CRF receptors via vagal and/or autocrine/paracrine pathways. Here, we review all findings concerning the expression and role of the CRF system in human liver, but also in other species. Direct and indirect regulatory data are als

Systems-level adaptations explain chronic tolerance development to nitrous oxide hypothermia in young and mature rats.

RATIONALE: Nitrous oxide (N(2)O) can initially lower core temperature (T (core)), but hypothermic tolerance develops with chronic administration. Therefore, one or both of T (core)'s controlling determinants, heat production (HP) and heat loss (HL), must adapt across repeated N(2)O administrations. Simultaneous measurements of HP, HL, and T (core) during chronic N(2)O administrations will elucidate this adaptive process and constitute a rigorous model for studying the systems-level dynamics of tolerance in both mature and young animals. This approach is justified by the need to better understa

Mismatch or allostatic load? Timing of life adversity differentially shapes gray matter volume and anxious temperament.

Traditionally, adversity was defined as the accumulation of environmental events (allostatic load). Recently however, a mismatch between the early and the later (adult) environment (mismatch) has been hypothesized to be critical for disease development, a hypothesis that has not yet been tested explicitly in humans. We explored the impact of timing of life adversity (childhood and past year) on anxiety and depression levels (N = 833) and brain morphology (N = 129). Both remote (childhood) and proximal (recent) adversities were differentially mirrored in morphometric changes in areas critically

Taking their breath away: metabolic responses to low-oxygen levels in anchialine shrimps (Crustacea: Atyidae and Alpheidae).

Crustaceans generally act as oxy-regulators, maintaining constant oxygen uptake as oxygen partial pressures decrease, but when a critical low level is reached, ventilation and aerobic metabolism shut down. Cave-adapted animals, including crustaceans, often show a reduced metabolic rate possibly owing in part to the hypoxic nature of such environments. However, metabolic rates have not been thoroughly explored in crustaceans from anchialine habitats (coastal ponds and caves), which can experience variable oxygenic regimes. Here, an atypical oxy-conforming pattern of oxygen uptake is reported in

Mapping the Evidence for Operator Syndrome Among Special Operations Forces: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Operator Syndrome is an emerging construct proposed to describe the cumulative psychological, physiological, cognitive, and neurobehavioral burden experienced by Special Operations Forces personnel following prolonged exposure to high-intensity operational demands. Despite increasing interest within military medicine, the construct remains poorly defined, and its conceptual foundations, assessment approaches, and supporting evidence have not been systematically synthesized. The purpose of this scoping review is to examine how Operator Syndrome has been conceptualized and operatio

Allostatic load in women with and without PTSD symptoms.

Allostatic load (AL) is the term used to describe cumulative physiological wear and tear that results from repeated efforts to adapt to stressors over time. Operationalized as a composite index of biological risk factors (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol, glycosylated hemoglobin, and cortisol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine), AL has been shown to increase with age, predict long-term morbidity and mortality among the elderly, and be associated with low parent education in a large adolescent sample. However, AL has not yet been studied in samples with putative "high stress" or posttraumatic st
