We report a case of tinea corporis on amputated leg stump caused by Trichophyton rubrum. The patient, a 54-year-old male, experienced a serious traffic accident, resulted his right leg amputated 3 years ago. Since then prosthesis was fitted and protective equipment of silicone stocking was worn for the stump. He consulted with circular, patchy and scaly erythemas with itching on his right below knee amputation stump for 2 months. The diagnoses of tinea corporis on the stump was made based on a positive KOH direct microscopic examination, morphologic characteristics and sequencing of the intern

A case of immediate stump reconstruction following proximal leg amputation below the knee is reported. Additional length and sensation are conferred to the stump by free autotransplantation of a composite flap taken from the unsalvageable amputated leg. This flap provided 13 cm of vascularized tibia invested in the skin of the foot. This operative procedure facilitated the fitting of a prosthesis and preserved knee function despite an initial very proximal amputation.

Stump neuroma is a common cause of pain from disorganized proliferation of nerve fascicles occurring after limb amputation. Ultrasound guided alcohol injection in painful stump neuroma has been tried as a new treatment approach. Herein, we report 2 male patients, who had traumatic amputation and claimed severe and diffuse burning pain in the stump area. Neuroma at the distal end of an amputated nerve was clearly identified on sonography. The patients gradually developed increasing severe pain that could not be managed with conservative care. They were treated with neurolysis using alcohol solu

The successful rehabilitation and the quality of life of below-knee amputees depend to a great extent on the load-bearing capacity of the amputation stump. Robb and Persson's operating method, utilizing a sagittal cut was used in 154 be low-knee amputations in the period 1982-1992 that were retrospectively analysed. In 91% of the cases, advanced vascular disorders related to diabetes mellitus were the main cause for the loss of a limb. Postoperative mortality amounted to 31.8%, the re-amputation rate was 4.5%. Rehabilitation up to full walking capability was achieved by 75% of the surviving pa

In 35 patients suffering from peripheral ischemic disease of the legs, disarticulation of the knee joint was performed instead of above-knee amputation. Operations were executed primarily or after failed bypass procedures for the salvation of the limb. 24 cases (67%) showed primary or delayed secondary stump healing. In 11 cases (31%), however, no stump healing was achieved due to either a wound infection (4 cases) or a necrosis of the anterior flap covering the weight bearing area of the stump (7 cases). Factors influencing the outcome of stump healing are discussed and different techniques o

The definitive aim of a minor amputation is limited resection with retention of feet and legs resulting in a completely loadable extremity, in contrast to the lower leg stump. A shift in the amputation level in the sense of a shortening is inevitably accompanied by a reduction in the stand area, an increase in axial pressure and a disruption of muscle equilibrium in the extent of movement of the rest of the foot. This knowledge forms the central issue for further treatment of minor amputations in addition to the subtle treatment of the skin of the sole for coverage of a tension-free tip of the

Limb amputation is a leading cause of pain and disability. Limb amputation can be associated with a myriad of symptoms, including phantom limb sensation, phantom limb pain, and stump pain. Treatment of phantom limb pain and stump pain, remains difficult, therefore optimal management must include a multidisciplinary approach. This case report describes the use of ultrasound for diagnosis and successful management, of persistent stump-neuroma pain, using pulsed radiofrequency ablation.

CASE: A 7-year-old boy presented with osteosarcoma of the ulna that required a transhumeral amputation. The patient completed neoadjuvant chemotherapy before surgery. To prevent bone overgrowth and improved prosthetic fitting, a modified amputation was performed with acute shortening and distal epiphysis preservation.
CONCLUSION: In this modified amputation, bone overgrowth was not seen and repeated surgeries for stump shaping were prevented. The modified technique enabled length for the prosthetic elbow and a wide stump for better fitting. In cases of transhumeral amputation in children, the

OBJECTIVE: A knee disarticulation or a through-knee stump is superior compared to a transfemoral stump. The thigh muscles are all preserved, and the muscle balance remains undisturbed. The range of motion of the hip joint is not limited. The bulbous shape of the stump allows full weight bearing at the stump end and can easily be fitted with a prosthesis. An amputee with a bilateral knee disarticulation is able to walk "barefoot".
INDICATIONS: A more distal amputation level, e.g., an ultra-short transtibial amputation, is not possible. Important alternative to transfemoral amputations. Possibl

Ectopic banking of amputated parts is a recognized technique for delayed replantation of an amputated part when the amputation stump will not permit immediate replantation. This is conventionally performed with the intent of transferring the injured part back to its anatomic position when the amputation stump is more appropriate for replantation. Current warfare conditions have led to a commonly encountered military trauma injury pattern of multiple extremity amputations with protected trunk and core structures. This pattern poses many challenges, including the limit or absence of donor sites

In order to reduce the need for repeated changes of socket due to postoperative atrophy and resorption of oedema simple temporary limbs are required to delay the casting of individual sockets until the stump is more mature. A randomized study of 95 below-knee amputees was performed with a re-usable temporary one-size prosthesis of endoskeletal type with adjustable tube length. Total contact was obtained by moulding a thin plastic pillow containing small plastic pellets around the stump in parallel connected sections. As air was evacuated the pillow became rigid. The pillow was kept in place ab

During a five-year period, seven patients were seen who failed to wear their protheses because of neuromas in their amputation stumps. Proximal ligation of the median, radial, and ulnar nerves allowed prosthetic wear and use in every instance. The advantage of this technique used at the time of the original amputation or at an early elective time will aid in the rapid rehabilitation of the patient.

BACKGROUND: This case report describes the revision of a trans-tibial amputation complicated by a proximal malunited fracture. It demonstrates the complexity of decisions involved in revisions of this nature.
CASE DESCRIPTION AND METHODS: The patient presented has a painful stump due to breakdown of soft tissues. She had been suffering for over a year with pressure sores and inability to use a prosthesis resulting from this, decreasing her quality of life. Malunion of a tibial fracture proximal to the amputation complicated her condition.
FINDINGS AND OUTCOMES: Initially it was feared that t

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate residual rotation of patients with forearm amputation and the contribution of involved muscle to residual rotation.
METHODS: Testing was performed using five fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens prepared by isolating muscles involved in forearm rotation. Amputation was implemented at 25 cm (wrist disarticulation), 18 cm, or 10 cm from the tip of olecranon. Supination and pronation in the amputation stump were simulated with traction of involved muscle (supinator, biceps brachii, pronator teres, pronator quadratus) using an electric actuator

INTRODUCTION: Major lower limb amputation significantly increases the energy cost of walking for patients. Complications such as osteomyelitis may require further surgery, and can lead to shortening of the stump. In these cases, the aim should be to treat infection without shortening the limb further. We present a series of patients with established osteomyelitis of the amputation stump, managed using a modified Lautenbach technique.
METHOD: Six patients with either above or below knee amputations, in the practice of a single orthopaedic surgeon, were studied. Ages range from 39 to 64 years,

CASE: Stump overgrowth is the most common complication in skeletally immature amputees. Various techniques including capping the amputated stump have been used to prevent it but have been associated with variable rates of recurrence of bony overgrowth. We report a technique of intercalary tibial shortening prophylactically to avoid stump overgrowth in some specific situations in children with traumatic crush injuries of the leg/foot.
CONCLUSION: The technique described in this case report not only provides more soft tissue coverage but also at 1-year follow-up, successfully prevented one of t

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of nontraumatic amputations continues to rise annually. The length of the preserved limb is directly associated with the success of ambulation. Wound infections after lower extremity amputations are very common, and reoperation is necessary in up to 61%. When dehisced stumps are complicated by bone exposure and osteomyelitis, more proximal amputation is traditionally performed.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of the electronic medical records from 2018 to 2024 was conducted at our institution, and dehisced amputated stumps with bone exposure were included for

Between 1983 and 1987, 76 flap grafts were performed in the leg and foot. In general, 3 types of flap were used: --51 ipsilateral flaps, the majority of which were musculo-cutaneous flaps from the medial head of gastrocnemius (17 cases). --17 cross-leg flaps from the opposite limb, the majority of which were medial fascio-cutaneous flaps (13 cases). --8 free flaps, making use of microsurgical techniques. The indications for cross-leg flaps and free flaps have become more limited in favour of local regional pedicle flaps. The lower part of the leg and amputation stumps in the foot are easily co

Between January and December 1992, 54 diabetic patients with 60 below knee amputations performed in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery O, Singapore General Hospital were available for evaluation. The average follow-up period was 16.3 months with a range of 13 to 24 months. Five patients had stump necrosis and above knee amputation was performed. Eight patients had partial stump necrosis and required debridement with or without secondary procedures. The other patients had uneventful stump healing which was defined as healing of the stump wound without complications and remained intact for at
