Tick-borne diseases are a constraint to livestock production in many developing countries as they cause high morbidity and mortality, which results in decreased production of meat, milk and other livestock by-products. The most important tick-borne diseases of livestock in sub-Saharan Africa are East Coast fever (caused by Theileria parva), babesiosis (caused by Babesia bigemina and B. bovis), anaplasmosis (caused by Anaplasma marginale) and heartwater (caused by Ehrlichia ruminantium). Despite their economic importance, information on the epidemiology of these diseases in many countries, incl

We report the detection of Theileria annulata, the causative agent of tropical theileriosis, by PCR in blood samples obtained from carrier cattle. The assay employs primers specific for the gene encoding the 30-kDa major merozoite surface antigen of T. annulata. A 721-bp fragment was amplified from blood samples taken monthly from calves experimentally infected with one of four different stocks of T. annulata originating in either Mauritania, Portugal, Spain, or Turkey. At the end of the experiment, five animals carried the infection for 12 months and two animals remained infected for 15 month

The insect immune deficiency (IMD) pathway resembles the tumour necrosis factor receptor network in mammals and senses diaminopimelic-type peptidoglycans present in Gram-negative bacteria. Whether unidentified chemical moieties activate the IMD signalling cascade remains unknown. Here, we show that infection-derived lipids 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (POPG) and 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl diacylglycerol (PODAG) stimulate the IMD pathway of ticks. The tick IMD network protects against colonization by three distinct bacteria, that is the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorfer

A genomic library of Babesia bovis DNA from the Mexican strain M was constructed in plasmid pUN121 and cloned in Escherichia coli. Several recombinants which hybridized strongly to radioactively labeled B. bovis genomic DNA in an in situ screening were selected and further analyzed for those which specifically hybridized to B. bovis DNA. It was found that pMU-B1 had the highest sensitivity, detecting 25 pg of purified B. bovis DNA, and 300 parasites in 10 microliters of whole infected blood, or 0.00025% parasitemia. pMU-B1 contained a 6.0 kb B. bovis DNA insert which did not cross-hybridize to

Vector Borne Diseases (VBDs) are considered emerging and re-emerging diseases that represent a global burden. The aim of this study was to explore and characterize vector-borne pathogens in different domestic animal hosts in Egypt. A total of 557 blood samples were collected from different animals using a convenience sampling strategy (203 dogs, 149 camels, 88 cattle, 26 buffaloes, 58 sheep and 33 goats). All samples were tested for multiple pathogens using quantitative PCR and standard PCR coupled with sequencing. We identified Theileria annulata and Babesia bigemina in cattle (15.9 and 1.1%,

BACKGROUND: Public interest for tick-borne pathogens in cattle livestock is rising due to their veterinary and zoonotic importance. Consequently, correct identification of these potential pathogens is crucial to estimate the level of exposition, the risk and the detrimental impact on livestock and the human population.
RESULTS: Conventional PCR with generic primers was used to identify groups of tick-borne pathogens in cattle breeds from northern Cameroon. The overall prevalence in 1260 blood samples was 89.1%, with 993 (78.8%) positive for Theileria/Babesia spp., 959 (76.1%) for Anaplasma/Eh

Distribution of Anaplasma spp., Babesia spp., Theileria spp., and Ehrlichia ruminantium, was for the first time studied in Bié Province, central Angola. We examined 76 blood samples of cattle originated from seven farms, and 13 blood samples of goats from two farms employing molecular genetic tools (PCR). Most prevalent was A. ovis-infection in goats (100%) and A. marginale-infection in cattle (38% of examined animals, and six out of seven farms). B. bigemina-infection was detected in only one specimen at Andulo, whereas B. bovis was not detected in Bié. We did not detected T. parva, the causa

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia divergens has been declining during the past decades in northeastern Hungary, and no cases have been observed since 2008. Infections of cattle with B. major and Theileria buffeli were hitherto reported in southern and western Europe. In other parts of the globe, there is evidence of emergence and a growing clinical importance of T. buffeli and closely related genotypes of the T. orientalis complex.
FINDINGS: In a herd of 88 beef cattle kept in northeastern Hungary, bovine piroplasmosis was diagnosed in nine animals through the

The passive transfer of antibodies from dams to offspring via colostrum is believed to play an important role in protecting neonatal mammals from infectious disease. The study presented here investigates the uptake of colostrum by 548 calves in western Kenya maintained under smallholder farming, an important agricultural system in eastern Africa. Serum samples collected from the calves and dams at recruitment (within the first week of life) were analysed for the presence of antibodies to four tick-borne haemoparasites: Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina, Theileria mutans and Theileria parva

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the impact of fluralaner on herd enzootic stability regarding tick fever pathogens (TFPs). This study aimed to assess whether implementing strategic control of Rhipicephalus microplus using fluralaner could influence the enzootic stability of beef herds regarding TFPs on a farm where this compound had never been previously used.
METHODS: One hundred Bos taurus indicus calves were divided into two groups of 50 animals each. One group underwent strategic tick control with pour-on fluralaner at 2.5 mg/kg (FLU), while the control group received a pour-on combinat

OBJECTIVES: To compare the features of farms on which the exposure of young cattle to tick fever organisms is sufficient to ensure that immunity is high and the risk of clinical disease is low (endemic stability) with those of farms on which exposure is insufficient to induce widespread immunity (hence without endemic stability); to examine the relationships between the management of ticks and tick fever, and endemic stability to Babesia bovis, B. bigemina and Anaplasma marginale.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of 874 cattle between the ages of 6 and 15 months on 64 dairy farms, from three cen

Advancing epidemiological insights is instrumental in optimizing region-specific hemopathogen control. A retrospective study in Chennai, South India screened 2,434 cattle over one year, revealing a 13.93% hospital-based prevalence of morphologically similar hemopathogen (Babesia, Theileria, Anaplasma) diseases (HPDs) by light microscopy (LM). Anaplasmosis predominated (8.63%), increasing during monsoon; theileriosis rose to 4.44%, babesiosis declined to 0.86%, with highest prevalence in multiparous Jersey crossbreds. Relative sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV of LM were prospectively estim

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Female tabanids play a key role in disease transmission as mechanical vectors for various hemopathogens, but only a limited number of studies have been conducted on them. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of hemopathogens in tabanid flies compared to those found in nearby cattle hosts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tabanids were collected using a Nzi trap for three consecutive days per month during the dry season (February-May 2021). Furthermore, blood samples were collected from 20 beef cattle (Bos taurus) raised in the same area where the flies were captured. Conve

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) are a growing global concern, contributing to emerging and re-emerging diseases in humans and animals. Human encroachment into natural habitats and unregulated wildlife translocations are key drivers of TBP emergence, as they expand wildlife-livestock-human interfaces and facilitate the introduction of alien TBPs into naïve hosts and new regions. Accurate molecular surveillance is essential to guide management strategies and prevent clinical outbreaks. This study conducted a cross-sectional molecular screening of TBPs in wildlife from 22 host species sampled over a

BACKGROUND: Buffaloes are important contributors to the livestock economy in many countries, particularly in Asia, and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) commonly infect buffaloes, giving rise to serious pathologies other than their zoonotic potential.
METHODS: The present investigation focuses on the prevalence of TBPs infecting buffaloes worldwide. All published global data on TBPs in buffaloes were collected from different databases (e.g., PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar) and subjected to various meta-analyses using OpenMeta[Analyst] software, and all analyses were conducted bas

This study describes, for the first time, the molecular and phylogenetic detection of Babesia bovis in sheep, with concurrent detection in cattle and R. microplus ticks during a severe tick infestation outbreak in northeastern Brazil. The affected herd, located in São Pedro, Rio Grande do Norte State, comprised sheep and cattle raised under a semi-intensive system. Blood, fecal, and tick samples were collected from 20 sheep and three cattle. Blood samples were subjected to complete blood count analysis and, together with tick samples, to DNA extraction and molecular detection of Anaplasma marg

Recently several cases of theileriosis due to the haemoprotozoan Theileria buffeli/orientalis have been recorded in the Apulian region, Italy. In this area other tick-borne pathogens were usually identified such as Anaplasma marginale and Babesia bigemina. Outbreaks were recorded showing that these pathogens can be observed separately or in mixed infections. Sub-clinical cases and carrier animals were also previously identified. A lack of specific techniques could not rule out the presence of other haemoparasites such as T. annulata, B. divergens, B. bovis, Ehrlichia phagocytophila and E. bovi

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a medium-sized canid species native to Europe. This species is characterized by rapid large-scale expansion. A similar trend is also observed in Serbia, where the species is now distributed in more than a half of the territory. Although jackals prefer habitats in human-dominated landscapes, these animals have not been studied well enough from an eco-epidemiological point of view, and little is known about their potential for carrying zoonotic pathogens. In a study conducted during a three-year period (01/2010-02/2013), a total of 216 hunted or road-killed go
