Anatomists and surgeons have described the presence of accessory biliary ducts between the liver and gallbladder. Bile leakage from accessory duct following laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is an unusual post-operative complication. Aim of the study was to assess its incidence, the intraoperative methods helpful for notice the anatomical anomaly and the impact of endoscopic procedure as a suitable treatment. From January 1997 to September 2002, 185 patients underwent LC for symptomatic cholelithiasis in our surgical department. Post-operative bile leakage from accessory biliary duct occurred

This paper presents a dynamic-similarity-based system for mathematically characterizing the functional connectivity and information flow of neural junctions. This approach allows for quantitative comparison of operations of neural junctions across systems, and an interpretation of their connectivity parameters in terms of the flow of multiunit firing patterns. The paper further uses this characterization to show how to rationally construct reduced operational models of neural junctions. Both uniformly proportional scaling and partial fragmentary representations are developed. The uniformly sca

Franciscus Sylvius, latinized from Franz de le Boë (*15 March 1614 in Hanau; † 14 November 1672 in Leiden), was a Hessian-Dutch physician, anatomist, and natural scientist of Flemish descent. He was an important clinician and iatrochemist, and is considered the founder of scientifically oriented medicine and clinical chemistry. Sylvius introduced the concept of affinity and dealt with digestive processes and body fluids. He was one of the leading exponents of the concept of blood circulation developed by William Harvey. As the person responsible for practical medicine in Leiden, Sylvius establ

Enrico Bottini (Stradella, Pavia, 7 September 1835 - Porto Maurizio, Sanremo, 11 March 1903) was a multifaceted surgeon, who left a strong mark in modern surgery, not only Italian but worldwide. A pupil of Porta and Ribeti, as well as the distinguished French surgeon and anatomist Charles-Marie-Édouard Chassaignac, he has dedicated himself throughout his career to various areas of medicine, ranging from bacteriology and anti-sepsis (use of a derivative of phenic acid) to urological surgery (the so-called "endo-urethral galva-cauterization", also called Bottini's operation, or Perineal incision

Understanding the molecular basis of the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis) and nerves (neurogenesis) is of great medical relevance. It is well known that dysregulation of angiogenesis leads to tissue ischemia, cancer, inflammation and other disorders, while a dysfunction of the nerve system contributes to motorneuron disorders like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALs) and other neurodegenerative diseases. The observations of Andreas Vesalius--Belgian anatomist of the 16th century--that patterning ofvessels and nerves show more than remarkable similarities, are currently revisited in exc

The French physiologist François Magendie showed, in 1822, that the anterior roots of the spinal nerves are motor and the posterior sensory. The English anatomist Charles Bell claimed the discovery, but his claim was based on republications of papers in which the wording had been altered to be consistent with Magendie's findings. Bell also appropriated Herbert Mayo's discoveries of the functions of the fifth and seventh cranial nerves. Bell repeated his claims in a number of influential publications, supported by his brothers-in-law John and Alexander Shaw. And for a century and a half, Bell f

The accessory renal arteries (ARAs) are a well-described variant of the renal vasculature with clinical implications for radiologists, surgeons, and clinicians. The aim of the present systematic review with meta-analysis was to estimate the pooled prevalence of ARAs, including their variant number, origin, and termination, and to highlight symmetrical and asymmetrical morphological patterns. The systematic review used four online databases in accordance with PRISMA 2020 and Evidence-based Anatomy Workgroup guidelines. R programming software was used for the statistical meta-analysis. The cell doctrine-the theory of ventricular localization of the mental faculties-includes Galen's idea of a locking or valve mechanism between the middle and the rear ventricle. The anatomical substrate was the vermiform epiphysis, known today as the vermis cerebelli. This entity played a significant role in brain physiology even though its appearance, texture, and location changed over time. This article tells the story of the "worm's" transformation from Galen to Vesalius and beyond. Until the time of Albertus Magnus (c. 1200-1280 ce), the worm corresponded to the vermis cerebelli. From the

The classical anatomist Drew Noden spearheaded craniofacial research, laying the foundation for our modern molecular understanding of development, evolution, and disorders of the craniofacial skeleton. His work revealed the origin of cephalic musculature and the role of cranial neural crest (CNC) in early formation and patterning of the head musculoskeletal structures. Much of modern cranial tendon research advances a foundation of knowledge that Noden built using classical quail-chick transplantation experiments. This elegant avian chimeric system involves grafting of donor quail cells into h

Variations in the arrangement and distribution of brachial plexus and its branches in the infraclavicular part are common and have been reported by several investigators since the 19th century. These variations are significant for the neurologists, surgeons, anesthetists and the anatomists. During routine anatomical dissection of the right axilla and infraclavicular region of a 45-year-old male cadaver, the medial root of the median nerve was found to receive a supplementary branch from the medial aspect of the terminal portion of the lateral cord of brachial plexus and the branch was passing

BACKGROUND: The German anatomist Hubert von Luschka gave name to several structures in the human body. One of great discussion is the duct of Luschka, part of the biliary system. There are different descriptions of the duct of Luschka. This might lead to confusion in the debate and as to what therapy should best be provided in case of an injured duct of Luschka.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature on descriptions of Luschka's duct and studied the original German descriptions by Hubert von Luschka.
RESULTS: While reading the original work by von Luschka on the hepatobiliary system, we were no

INTRODUCTION: Spigelian hernias are rare hernias of the anterior abdominal wall named after Adrian van den Spiegel, the anatomist who first described them in the 16th century. They represent around 2% of all hernias.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present an 83-year-old female with one week history of a painful right iliac fossa swelling, her examination revealed a tender lump with no cough impulse and non-reducible and her computed tomography (CT) scan showed a mass anterior to ileocaecal valve suggestive of a caecal volvulus. Intra-operative the finding was a Spigelian hernia containing an append

Reproduction and fertility have been objects of keen inquiry since the dawn of humanity. Medieval anatomists provided the first accurate depictions of the female reproductive system, and early microscopists were fascinated by the magnified sight of sperm cells. Initial successes were achieved in the in vitro fertilization of frogs and the artificial insemination of dogs. Gamete and embryo research was in the cradle of modern cell biology, providing the first evidence of the multi-cellular composition of living beings and pointing out the importance of chromosomes for heredity. In the 20th cent

The present case report describes the topographical anatomy and radiological study of an asymmetrical inferior articular process of a lumbar vertebra, which was detected during routine osteology teaching of undergraduate medical students. The inferior articular process of the lumbar vertebra on the left side was rudimentary, while that on the right was normal in size. On the left side an additional bony projection was noted anterior to the rudimentary inferior articular process. The difference in height between the inferior articular processes of the two sides may play an important role in the

Surgical implantation of an inflatable penile prosthesis is considered the gold-standard treatment for severe erectile dysfunction. Reservoir placement is one of the most challenging steps of this procedure and requires knowledge of the related anatomy. To meet these demands, we have established a postgraduate masterclass program on penile prosthesis implantation that identifies the essential anatomical landmarks demonstrated in predissected anatomical specimens and offers a step-by-step surgical training carried out in body donors under tutored guidance. The main focus of this study is the te

BACKGROUND: Anatomical variations are frequently reported in cadaveric studies, although most reports focus on isolated anomalies rather than multiple concurrent variations. Recognizing such variations is important for clinicians and anatomists because they may influence surgical approaches, diagnostic interpretation, and patient outcomes.
CASE REPORT: During dissection of the cadaver of a 60-year-old Asian woman, we identified ten variations involving the muscular, vascular, and nervous systems: (1) pectoralis quartus, (2) extensor carpi radialis intermedius (ECRI), (3) bilateral absence of

Renal ectopia results from an abnormal arrest of renal ascent during embryonic development and is often associated with malrotation, unusual vasculature, and anomalies of the collecting system. Although numerous ectopic kidneys are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, their variant anatomy holds clinical significance as it may interfere with imaging interpretation and surgical procedures. We present a case of a right iliac ectopic kidney identified during the routine dissection of an 82-year-old male donor. The kidney was located in the right iliac fossa and demonstrated marked anterior m

A 26-year-old patient underwent a successful ablation of Grade 2 diffuse astrocytoma of the right parietal lobe. The postoperative computed tomography angiography with 3D modeling revealed a residual avascular porencephalic cyst. Otherwise, multiple arterial variants have been encountered. First, the left A1 segment was fenestrated, and three A2 segments arose from the anterior communicating artery. The middle A2 segment was dominant and supplied left callosomarginal and both pericallosal territories. The right A2 segment supplied the right callosomarginal territory, while the left A1 was limi

Congenital cardiac surgery is one of the most challenging and fascinating branches of modern medicine which continues to advance in areas and improving outcomes, post-operative and pre-operative care. Patent Ductus Arteriosus was the first congenital heart lesion to be successfully corrected surgically. The landmark surgery was performed by Dr. Robert E. Gross in 1938 and opened up the possibility of subsequent surgical correction of various other lesions, which were considered to be untreatable previously. The first successful surgical closure of persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was precede

Morphological alterations of thyroid gland are common and result because of disturbed embryogenesis. These may vary from hypoplasia, ectopy to hemiagenesis and genesis of the gland. The authors strive to report an unusual morphological alteration of the left lobe of the thyroid gland. The current study presents a case of unusual extension of the thyroid gland discovered incidentally while dissecting the anterior cervical region of an adult Indian male cadaver. The left lobe displayed medial extension from its inferior angle which overlapped the common carotid artery (CCA). The isthmus was abse
